The "Change the Offense" rants are Stupid!!

Does this play out better in ppl's heads? 6-0 with Ganz? That dude had senior leadership at WR. He could count on Swift, Pederson, Nunn and Purify when things were bad. Who does Lee have? Plus Ganz had Murtha and Slauson in there. Zac Lee has not played well since the first few games, but come on man. It's not limited to him.. the o-line and recievers are a huge part of the mess. I'm okay with Green starting or getting his chance. But who gets to start and right and left tackle? What about right guard? And who is going to start at WR too? Dont just address QB. Address the entire offense.

That's why you put in the QB that adds another dimension to your offense. Ganz had two very dependable recievers last year. Our recievers just aren't very good.

So, let me get this straight. We won't win because we don't have talent. We won't get any talent until we start winning. Isn't this just another chicken and the egg?

It is Junior --- that is why it stinks.

Top recruits will, in large numbers, go only to perceived winners. Thus, the team without sufficient talent, like NU, must win with the limited talent they have --- at least win enough --- to entice enough great players to sign on. That is, a team has to over-achieve and show some real potential with some big wins on national TV against teams they should not beat in order to make the place an acceptable destination for top recruits. Thus, the team has to be coached up and look good --- even with limited talent --- in order to attract top talent.

We have had 3 such national TV games. VT. There we looked inept and choked --- but there was some upside in yet another national TV loss. Against Missouri we looked inept --- with heart and an overachieving defense --- not so bad. Against TT we were outclassed in every respect and looked inept again.

Over time, say the last 5-6 years, what is NU's record on national TV? have we won 20% of the games? maybe, but if so, not much better than that. This is why recruits will not even consider us. This is why the recruits we get turn down places like Nevada and UTEP to come here. When a recruit has options like .... basically any of the top 20 or so programs .... they go elsewhere.

So.... yes.... until we beat people we should not beat --- and do so on national TV and do so semi-regularly, showing heart all the while --- until this happens (as difficult as it is) --- NU will not attract major recruits. Apart from overachieving and knocking off top teams in televised games happens, the talent gap between NU and the top programs will continue to get worse for NU rather than better.

Maybe. However, OU is not ranked and has stunk up the place on national TV as well this year. Do you really think their recruiting is going to suffer because of it? I bet not. In fact, I bet it is better because of it. Recruits will see they could play right away and will sign with OU. Florida State has stunk up the place for quite some time on national television, yet they continue to pull in top 10-15 recruiting classes.

That is because OU is already a perceived winner who is currently down. That actually, as you point out, may help their recruiting.

NU is a perceived loser --- as much as we all love NU --- any 18 year old (in Texas, Florida, Ohio, California, New York --- any place that generates recruits outside on Nebraska and border states) only knows NU as a loser, a nobody. Perhaps they have heard that NU was once something, but most would not even know much about that --- they were what... 3 years old then?

They only see a team that is a non-team. Until NU performs (with the talent they have) in such a way as to change that perception, NU will continue to get mid-level recruits.

But you are quite correct about OU. It is just that OU is seen as a winner, and NU as a loser.

It's incremental, and not nearly so black and white as robsker tries to make it out to be. But whatever, lol.

Sure it is incremental --- but there is the concept of critical mass too. The first incremental positive move is to look good enough on TV --- winning when you should not showing grit heart and grit a few times --- and several big recruits jump aboard. Then, the several recruits lend credibility to that class and as it is being constructed others jump on too. Once a critical mass of decent recruits sign on the perception changes and clears the past for others.

So yes it is incremental but that which catalyzes the first step is winning on TV --- and since you play only good teams on TV --- that means winning against teams with better talent. Call that black and white --- I call it reality. Until it happens, NU (or any other mid-level program) will remain mid-level.

How is Florida State viewed? They have no trouble knocking down top 10's each and every year.

Junior:

Man... you ask tough questions. FSU is somewhat of an exception because they are in an area where there are so many recruits locally that are excellent that they almost cannot help but get the leftovers from Florida and Miami --- and those leftovers are STILL excellent.

NU has no such privileged location relative to D1 talent. Same with an array of Texas schools.

You do realize that Florida State has been outrecruiting Miami the last 3 years or so. How in the heck can Miami until this year be viewed as anything other than a loser anyway? Georgia has been highly ranked in terms of recruiting classes, yet they continue to play subpar. I've yet to see a TCU class ranked in the top 25. However, they are in the top 25 year in and year out. Boise State is another one. When Stoops took over at OU, they were downright horrible. Yet, his only NC came with Blake's recruits. How the heck did Blake who had a horrid head coaching win/loss percentage recruit such great players? Urban Meyer took over at Florida. Florida had some pretty tough seasons before he got there. Yet, he's on his way to competing for 3 NC in 5 years as head coach down there. Recruits go to schools that give them the best chance to play in the NFL. I bet UCLA's recruiting even though they are horrible and have been losers for quite some time is really really good as long as Chow remains the OC.

Look guys, if Joey Ganz was still QB, Nebraska would be 6-0 right now and probably ranked 4th in the country. No one, I mean no one, would be ragging on Shawn Watson, and our offense would probably be averaging similar numbers to last season. Hell, Ganz WOULD be a potential Heisman candidate.

Does Watson need to simplify things? Do we need to address a lot of issues? Hell yes, its stupid to continue running things without the proper personnell in place.

But our problems stem from QB issues first and foremost. DJ Jones does suck at right tackle, and our receivers are dropping easy catches. But our pass pro wasn't great last season, and our wideouts have been average for a while now. Ganz was just the difference. He almost always felt the pressure. He knew when to step up in the pocket. He knew when to take off and run, and he also knew how to find an open man through improvisation.

We've had open receivers the last two games, but Lee is not hitting them. His biggest problem is throwing on the run. It's like he has no vision downfield when he escapes the pocket. He also does a poor job of feeling pressure. If a pass rusher rushed up field and got around one of the tackles, Ganz was always able to feel the pressure and step up the pocket. Lee lacks that ability.

It's time to go with Cody Green, take your lumps, win the North by default, and work towards a big season in 2009. One thing Cody did extremely well on Saturday was stepping up in the pocket to avoid the sack. One has to wonder that had he been in the game earlier, how would he have fared running the zone read? IMO, a 5 or 6 yard gain for Lee is 10 to 15 for Green. Secondly, it means the defense can't just key on Helu.

It's time to go with Green. Change the QB, go young, help the Environment, Go GREEN!!

Yep, it's all the QB's fault this offense has been rated in the top 20 the last two years. :bang

I just don't buy this argument guys. If Ganz was still here, he would be finding open receivers. Our QB play has completely destroyed our offense. Most innexperienced QB's need about 2 or 3 games before things start to click. Lee has digressed.

It's time to cut our losses and ride the Green Train.

We can still win the North by default with Green at the helm. Get him place now, and we will be better in the long run.
