Count 'Bility
Watching this on classic right now, and was just wondering if someone could refresh to me the reasoning of the tearaway shirts worn by the players in this game (or at this time in history for that matter?) I think I remember my dad tellin me when i was really young, but cant recall. Thanks. Quote Link to comment
mmmtodd
So you would not be tackled or slowed by a defender merely grabbing ahold of your uniform. I believe they were quickly outlawed? I know they were for sure in the NFL...so Im sure they were in the NCAA as well. Quote Link to comment
knapplc
I remember tear-away jerseys. They'd be heading to the sidelines after every other carry with their jersey in tatters all around their shoulders, pads on full display. Quote Link to comment

Count 'Bility
So basically it was a ploy by some/many programs to allow their ball carriers to not be tackled by simply grabbing a jersey?. be damned. Quote Link to comment
mitch7
Our dline would have gone through 10000 every game from all the holding. Quote Link to comment
CoachKevin
Only Skill position players had them. I remember reading that a Option QB would go through about 8 per game. Quote Link to comment
VA Husker Fan
They were good and bad. IIRC, once you lost enough of the number, you had to replace the jersey. You'd never see the same guy carrying the ball 5 times in a row because his shirt wouldn't last that long, and I wonder how many times defenses were told to get a good piece of Kinney or Pruitt's jersey. In fact I don't know that QBs even wore them because I don't recall them going out that often. Quote Link to comment

huKSer
How about tear away jersey for defense to show holding and tear away shoulderpads to show horse collar? Quote Link to comment
