Jamal Turner Interview

Recommended Posts

In passing, tell him NOT to act like a previous QB we had named Jamal and run out of bounds instead of fighting for yards to continue crucial drives....DAMN, I had to bring that painful, painful memory back up.

In all honesty, what attracted him to the Huskers...coaches, facility, academics, history??

perhaps you're thinking of joe dailey, because lord was a beast with the ball in his hands.

:yeah

Jamal Lord was an absolute warrior at QB for NU. Please don't mistake J-Lo for Daily.

I don't think the NU QB single game rushing record holder, 234 yards against Texas, fits this description.

I must have seen a different J. Lord playing...... "Warrior" does not even come close to the guy I saw playing.

must have. criticize his passing all you like, but the guy carried our offense on his back for two years to the tune of about 2400 yards rushing. i don't recall him ever missing a start and he broke tackles with ease, including some wicked stiff arms. he may not have had the intangibles of other NU qbs, and he definitely didn't have the same talent around him, but i guarantee we'd have won a lot less than 17 games those two years without him busting his ass for us.

No doubt. I agree entirely.

Some will call me crazy, but Lord was in the same league running the ball as our top flight running QB's of the past. I say this in a qualified way. Put Lord behind some of the lines that our other favorite QB's had and watch out. He was fast, strong and tough. great runner.

Or... put this way -- Jamal Lord was TREMENDOUSLY better a runner than any QB we have at present.

Back to the topic.

I don't think Turner will be quite the athlete that Crouch or Lord were, though I think he will be a good runner; however, I do anticipate him being a more polished passer.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with the bolded statement above. Just curious if you've seen any of Turner's film yet? He's also a standout basketball player who averages 18 pts. per game. The kid is the epitome of an athlete.

+1 - Turner's film is ridiculous. He looks as athletic as anyone I've seen in a while.

That is quite fair. I will rephrase it. I don't think that turner will depend on his running ability quite like previous qb's, both because of his passing ability and the system that he will be playing in. I do, however, think he is comparable athletically, but perhaps not in running prowess (Crouch and Lord were just ridiculous). Time will tell. Running in high school and running in college are two different things, but I am excited for Turner (provided he signs ;) ).

oh, I have seen his film.

The million dollar question is, what will that "system" be? Our recruiting trend as of late shows that we're sitting on three 4* Dual-Threat QB's in Green, Carnes and Turner. If the Arizona game was any indication of that "system" then we can probably expect our future QB's to run it 10-20 times per game. As ugly of a runner as Zac Lee is, he did run the ball 18 times in that game.

Also worth noting is the new article in today's LJS that hints at some sort of transition in the offense. Not sure what to make of it, but here's the exact quote from Shawn Watson himself:

As for Nebraska's changing offense, "I've always tried to stay on the cutting edge," the coach said. "I push myself and keep my box open to new ideas and trends to attack a defense. I mean, that's my job, to stay ahead of the curve. So this has been a real easy transition."

This tells me that our Dual-Threat QB's will be using their legs as much as their arms in the future. At least that's how I'm interpreting the statement. Since it's well known that Bo wants a 50/50 rush/pass offense, that's probably a valid interpretation.

However your point is noted because Crouch and Lord were products of a completely different offensive philosophy. Until we see what this so-called transition is that Watson speaks of, I'd hold off on any QB comparison statements to the contrary. Watson just might surprise us next season and our QB's will be running as much as they are gunning.
