Nebraska VS. Iowa - The battle for Carter Lake use an old bell or boat as the trophy

Carter Lake is the only city in Iowa located west of the Missouri River. This is due to a flood that occurred in March 1877, which redirected the course of the river 2 km (1.25 mi) to the southeast. The remnants of the old river course, which were called Saratoga Bend, became an oxbow lake, Carter Lake, for which the town is named today.

 

Soon after the formation of the lake, the site became a flourishing recreational area. It included, "a boathouse at the foot of Locust street, hotels and club houses were numerous and the lake was the scene of many a pleasant rowing and fishing party."[2]

 

After extensive litigation between Iowa and Nebraska, in 1892 the Supreme Court of the United States finally ruled that Carter Lake belonged to Iowa in Nebraska v. Iowa, 143 U.S. 359 (1891). Although the general rule is that state boundaries follow gradual changes in the course of a river, the Court ruled that an exception exists when a river avulses one of its bends. In 1972, the court made another ruling on the circumstances of Carter Lake when it ruled on a boundary dispute between the two states in Nebraska v. Iowa, 406 U.S. 117 (1972)[3].

 

Legally considered part of Council Bluffs, residents lacked the basic city services enjoyed by residents east of the Missouri but were still subject to city taxes. The community successfully seceded in the 1920s, intending to become part of Omaha, but the Nebraska city did not want to pay to extend sewers or water lines either and in 1930 Carter Lake was incorporated as its own municipality.

 

During the late 1930s and 1940s the Chez Paree nightclub and casino operated openly in Carter Lake because casinos were legal in Iowa but illegal in Nebraska. Consequently, Carter Lake gained the reputation as the biggest gambling spot between Chicago and Reno.

 

A mistaken belief that a defendant corporation located in Carter Lake was a legal resident of Nebraska resulted in a second U.S. Supreme Court case, Owen Equipment & Erection Co. v. Kroger, 437 U.S. 365 (1978). This case clarified the law regarding ancillary jurisdiction of state claims in federal courts.

 

Carter Lake creates a geographic oddity for travelers going to Eppley Airfield which it surrounds on the south and west. Consequently travelers going to Eppley Airfield from anywhere except North Omaha will be going through Carter Lake, Iowa. It has caused great confusion when travelers not used to the area go through and see a "Welcome to Iowa" sign on their way to and from the airport.

The Minnesota v Penn State "rivalry" was manufactured. The Gophs were the first matchup for PSU when they joined the conference and the teams made a trophy game out of it, most MN fans (and probably PSU fans) couldn't care less about this one. On the other hand the other three trophy games Minnesota has are strictly organic and are all awesome and long standing trophy games.

Same goes for the MSU-PSU "rivalry", the Land Grant trophy?

Yes, the Land-Grant trophy was manufactured and has not caught on, despite the season ending, premiere spot (usually right after The Game - OSU/UM).

 

I have always found it ironic that the biggest rivalry does not have a trophy like the rest.

You don't need an established rivalry to create a just-for-fun trophy. Just an annual series. Maybe it becomes a great rivalry after a few years or maybe not. Doesn't mean you can't have a trophy for the players to go grab from the opposing sidelines after the game. Someone on another board (I think) suggested a Barry Alvarez trophy for the NU-Wisconsin series. It could be a bronze bust of him. It would be kind of funny and also have significance considering Alvarez obviously has strong ties to both schools.

I'll also add that I agree with the comments about not wanting to see manufactured rivalries. They've done that with Penn State-M*ch*g*n State with the Land Grant Trophy. Who cares about that. I think there will be a natural interest regionally or even naturally in seeing Nebraska-Iowa and Nebraska-Wisconsin, but there's no need to do anything contrived around either of those. Just play the games, have the fans interact and let things develop.

What was quoted from the wiki wasn't the complete story. Back when the gold pants came out, scUM previously had destroyed any team it played for a long time (holding a 22-6-2 record against tOSU). They were deemed unstoppable against any opponent they played. Basically, saying they were human just like anyone else. Thus the tradition started.

This may be already decided, but who gets the "NU" designation when Nebraska and Northwestern play each other? I figure that it could be UNL and NWU respectively, and they play for the rights to get a nu trophy of some kind. My interest in this is that my daughter just enrolled at Northwestern so I'll definitely be seeing them play each other if I can. She's Texas raised, not a Husker fan, so there will be a little in-family rivalry!

Ooops, I let that slip... I'll add though, she was born there and so was her mama, but with a little therapy, I'll get over it. The good news is she'll be a BIG TENer at the very least.
