Article: Alabama and Ohio State the only threats to Nebraska

I spoke to Jeff Jamrog last night about our chances this year. Jamrog agreed that we have *A CHANCE* to do great things, including - his words - going "all the way" this year. I can only imagine how vehemently some of our regular posters must disagree with Mr. Jamrog's assessment. I can only imagine the bucket of cold water some of our regular posters would have dumped on his sentiment, which echoes that of most people who post here. I find that amazing.

That is very cool that you got to hear Jamrog himself say those things. Very cool to read that.

I would agree with him as well. I can see why some won't be happy or 'satisfied' until we start beating teams who I guess according to the OP are ranked in the top 5 or are somehow considered to be the 'big boys' of college football. To me we shut down the runners up to the National Championship last year and had we had an offense we would have beaten the National Champion runners up. Of course we had some road bumps too but it's year 3 under a new coach and we have gotten better every single year he's been here especially defensively. People need to realize that Bill Callahan went 5-7 his last year as head coach. 5 and 7. I don't know how people can complain considering where we were at before.

So far it is like someone sitting down at a blackjack table. He started playing two dollars a hand and added the winnings to his bet each time and won all three. Our big winner of fourteen dollars then jumps up and down wanting to be sure that the casino brings ten million $ worth of chips to the table cause he thinks he can't lose.

It's nice some scribes and especially coaches have us highly ranked. It is great we beat a d1 team-- like the gambler's third hand. But 8 of the 9 hands we have remaining will be tougher I think. I think we had better tamp down the "there are only two teams in the country that can beat us"' until we are six or seven more games down the road. WTF? Is a bad feeling to have when the Husker's get beat, but especially for folks thinking playing these games is only to fill time until our rightful place in the NCG. Right now I'll feel better when we pass the Ksucks test.

sd,

What have you seen to think we have a punchers chance against Ohio State? What actions on the field make you think we win? What shortcomings does Ohio State have that play into our strengths, proven or not.

Me thinks it is undying devotion to Nebraska, which I love.

Do you see Martinez running though Ohio State like the cream puffs we have faced?

They have beaten a 12th rated team and did it pretty soundly.

Love your enthusiasim but just do not see the reality of it happening from past results. Yes it could but we have seen nothing to indicate we could to this point, other than just being a fan that thinks we win every game.

I am glad you feel that way, I just have to have something concrete to stand on.

you,

do you know what puncher's chance mean? it means that even though you are outmatched and lose, if you put up your absolute best effort, you will be able to hang around and possible win. not probably, but with your perfect effort, it is possible that you will hang around long enough to actually win. that is what i thought NU would have against TU last year if the won the north. it turns out that they did... what did they do last year during the season to prove they would have a puncher's chance against a much better tu? i do not think you have to beat a better team to be a good team. yes, tOSU beat a 13th ranked team handily, and that is why i think them and bama are the clear cut 1 and 2, but after that it is up for grabs. tOSU has proved their worth, but why do we have to for you to think we are good. we have not done anything to make you doubt us, just as they have done nothing to prove their worth.

so, lets look at this logically...

here is why i think our team is top 10 worthy. first, our coach. i know someone dismissed that earlier, it may have been you. but how can you dismiss the head coach? that is huge. that is what closes the talent gap between NU and tu and makes the game competitive. BO can scheme and he seems to be a good head coach. that is huge, i believe with BO at the helm we could be competetive against anyone.

two, last year. again, someone dismissed last year. past is prologue, last year is a good indicator of this year. our defense proved itself last year, we should be able to think that the defense will still be good. given BO's ability to scheme, our secondary and the front four, we have beyond a reasonable doubt to believe they will be good. then there is the offense. qb was a huge concern, and still should be, although now we have reason to be optimistic (just because i do not think that word is in your vocabulary, it is the glass is half full one). we have playmakers at wideout, great backs, and a qb with the potential to lead this team. now, i do think last year matters, and with how bad our offense was, we only lost 4 games and 3 of those were by less than 3. so we have proved we do not need a stellar defense, although we might have one.

three, washington v. wku and idaho. i do not think washington is a good team, not in the least. but what i do think is that we beat washington as badly as we beat on wku and idaho, at washington. and i think washington, for how bad they are, are still much better than idaho and wku. although we did not learn a lot from that game, we also did not find out any weaknesses. we have a lock down defense. and our toughest regular season game is against a texas that cannot run and has a horrible game coach, at home.

will i be disappointed if we do not make it to the MNC, no. my goals are still the same as before the season, get to the big 12 championship and win a bcs bowl. am i delusional, no. i just think we have the potential to get to the mnc, and i am excited about that.

what has NU done to make you think they do not deserve to be in the top ten? and more importantly, why is the burden of proof so high for NU to prove they belong in the conversation or the top 10 for that matter? other than tOSU or bama, what have the other schools down to prove their worth?

Most have not lost every single game to a top ranked team going on 10 years. We are on line with Duke if memory serves me correctly.

I think we deserve the ranking we have, I do not questions what they say. I just want us to win what is needed and see it build.

We beat a Arizona team last year, we lost to Texas and Va Tech, Texas Tech pretty badly.

When we turn the corner and are back those games will be 50/50 I hope. Osborne never won them all either.

Do I think there is a chance for ust win it all, of course, do I think Oregon has a chance, yes, Auburn, Arkansas, Texas, OHio State, Bama, Florida, Oklahom, South Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Stanford, Arizona, all have a chance at this time

By what we have done are we any more likely than the others? Who knows. Their fans feel they have it won already. I listen to Alabama fans every single day, they are more Kool Aided up than us!!!

Just because I want to see the trend change, does not make me negative. We are still not over that hump. It may come this year, I hope so. But for a fan base that continually talks about history and tradition, we seem to forget what our is. We put down teams like Boise State, who have accomplished beating top rated teams for quite awhile now. They are not in the hunt according to some, but at this point they are far more qualified than us.

To me, beating who we have beaten really means nothing, the same for many of the others. To compare ourselves equally we need to play equal competition, to that extent I would say, Bama, Ohio State, Arizona, Boise State have proved on the field where they are, we have not yet. Not because of ability of play, but lack of competition. And after listening to Bo I think that will change in the coming years.

I see tremendous improvement in this program. All directly due to Bo and his drive and determination. I see more talented players, both offensively and defensively. I see us playing to our talent and recruiting to what we want to do. I see no negatives.

I just voice the things most do not want to hear. I am not dragging the team down, I just feel our display of excellence needs to be against a team that has a chance or the capability of stopping us. I do not know if there are teams out there that do. We maybe every bit as good as we have looked. I do not see us losing a game from this point forward through conference play. I do not know where we come up in CCG or in the bowl game until we see who those are. I never say we are going to win the MNC, too much luck invovled in getting there.

Pestimistic is saying we have no chance, we are going to lose to this team or that team or we can not play with this team or that team. I am not saying that. I am saying we have nothing to compare with at this time, other than our hopes and visions.

But I am done posting on this subject, so will not be on much as that is all this site has turned into. You guys drink the Kool Aide. When I think it is time I will.

first and foremost, i hardly know what we are arguing anymore.

the first point you made, i feel is unfair and misleading. we do not play that many top teams, so there are few chances to fix that stat.

the second point, who says those teams do not have a chance. that is the point of chances, they are not guaranteed. many teams can have a chance, but it is just a chance. and i think most of us realize we just have a chance, as do those other teams (except auburn, arkansas, south carolina, michigan, wiconsin; they will lose at least one game).

and for your last point, what would you want this board to be? what should we be talking about?

As he's mentioned repeatably..."that we've played nobody, beat nobody and proved nothing".

lol! The dude must be terrific company in real life. Nothing is worth discussing until it's completed, finished and in the history bin. Trends, improvement, progress, backwards steps, failure, success, variables, analysis, expectation discussion, the whole trip/adventure....bahhh WORTHLESS!

haha....it takes all kinds! :corndance
