Stanford Online Classes

Recommended Posts

Stanford University is offering a whole bunch of online classes in the coming months - free and open to the general public.

This is a pretty awesome chance to learn something new! Or, to brush up on something you're already familiar with. They are not going to be at the same level as the on-campus courses (of course), and there are plenty of lecture videos and course materials available online (MIT's OpenCourseWare, for instance). Where this is unique, in my opinion, is the fact that you'll be going through these with thousands of others at the same. And, you'll be graded on assignments and exams.

Here's a list, I've broken them down by starting date.

Jan 23

Technology Entrepreneurship http://www.venture-class.org/

Cryptography http://www.crypto-class.org/

Design and Analysis of Algorithms I http://www.algo-class.org/

Making Green Buildings http://www.greenbuilding-class.org/

Machine Learning http://jan2012.ml-class.org/ (This class was also offered last quarter. I dropped out of it halfway through, but the professor, Andrew Ng, is outstanding and this is really, really well done)

Probabilistic Graphical Models http://www.pgm-class.org/

Model Thinking http://www.modelthinker-class.org/

Natural Language Processing http://www.nlp-class.org/

Human-Computer Interaction http://www.hci-class.org/ [Jan 30]

Feb 20

Software Engineering for Software as a Service http://www.saas-class.org/

CS101 http://www.cs101-class.org/

Computer Security http://www.security-class.org/

The Lean Launchpad (entrepreneurship) http://www.launchpad-class.org/

Game Theory http://www.game-theory-class.org/ [Late Feb, no date specified]

March 5

Anatomy http://www.anatomy-class.org/

Information Theory http://www.infotheory-class.org/ [March 2012, date not specified]

I'd encourage everyone to watch the brief 2-3 minute introduction videos for each class. The ones I am thinking of trying out for the January series - Algorithms, HCI, and possibly Technology Entrepreneurship. Green Buildings sounds interesting too, and maybe not too intensive (never underestimate a class, though :P)

Hope that some fellow HB'ers will be joining in!

Wow, it looks like all the January ones got pushed to February. Typical slackers ;)

The only one I see that still starts in January is Human-Computer Interaction, slated to start Jan 30.

Did you sign up for that one yet, NUance?

What an awesome thing for Stanford to do. This almost seems to good to pass up. The last couple of classes in the first session interest me the most:

Natural Language Processing http://www.nlp-class.org/

Human-Computer Interaction http://www.hci-class.org/ [Jan 30]

Last semester they offered an introduction to Databases and their Artificial intelligence courses.

I didn't follow the DB one and kinda slacked off on the AI course, but intend to go watch the free lectures again. It was interesting. The teacher of the AI course resigned in the last week to form or join a startup doing this because "teaching just 200 students at a time wouldn't be enough" after holding a class for 150K+ students around the world.

I'm still on the fence. It would be a GREAT opportunity to learn in a field I'm interested in. But I've been busy as heck at work. I'm going to look into it a bit more, but I don't think I'll have the time to carry through with it.
