Nebraska to study concussions

If all goes according to Dennis Molfese's plan, the day is coming when a football player who takes a hit to the head will come to the sideline, take off his helmet and slip on an electrode-covered mesh cap.

 

The team's medical staff will analyze the player's brain waves on the spot and determine within minutes whether he can safely return to the game or whether he has sustained a concussion and, if so, how severe.

Anyone know if this is part of the collaboration between the Ivy and the CIC to study concussions or is this a Nebraska deal only?

Sounds cool but the logistics of this will be a nightmare. Where are you going to find a portable machine to analyze said brainwaves? Unless you wire an ethernet port you will have some huge clunky thing on the sideline. Who would operate the damned thing? Most trainers only deal with torn ACLs and the such, are you going to find a brainwave analyst the chill on the sideline every game? Wait until the NCAA gums up the works with rules.

I would guess it won't be on the sidelines but back in the locker room just like Xrays and MRIs are now.

They made room for an instant replay box with a curtain, so I would hope they could manage the room for a medical device that could positively effect the health of a player long term.... I just don't see your concern I guess.....
