Eric the Red
Two Duck recruits accused of abuse From AP via SI: Two football players have been charged with sexually abusing two women while on a recruiting visit to the University of Oregon this winter. Marvin Johnson, 18, of Compton, Calif., and Major Culbert, 18, of San Pedro, Calif., were also accused of burglary in the incident that happened during the weekend of Jan. 13. Johnson, a safety, signed a letter of intent on Feb. 1 to play at Oregon this fall. Culbert signed with Nebraska. The arrests were first reported Wednesday on the Web site of the Register-Guard newspaper. In a statement released late Wednesday, the Oregon athletic department said it learned of the incident in late January and stopped recruiting Culbert. The department said Johnson was offered a scholarship because it did not believe he was directly involved. The university said it learned last week that a warrant was issued for his arrest. Johnson was arraigned Wednesday in Lane County Circuit Court and released. He agreed to appear at his next court appearance, scheduled for June 28. "Johnson's status with the football program, as well as the university, will be dependent upon his exoneration of these charges," the statement said. Culbert, a defensive back, was arrested in Los Angeles last week and spent four days in jail before he was released on bail, the newspaper reported. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Eugene on Tuesday. Quote Link to comment

NU fan in Denver
New details in the incident Journal Star Police release details of incident with recruit Saturday, May 27, 2006 - 12:09:54 am CDT Major Culbert was arrested in Los Angeles last week on charges of first-degree burglary and first-degree sexual abuse after a warrant for his arrest was issued in Eugene, Ore. BY HILARY KINDSCHUH / Lincoln Journal Star Eugene, Ore., police released a detailed account Friday of an alleged sexual abuse incident in January involving a Nebraska football recruit from Los Angeles. Major Culbert, 18, was on a recruiting visit to the University of Oregon when the incident allegedly occurred. He was arrested in Los Angeles last week on charges of first-degree burglary and first-degree sexual abuse after a warrant for his arrest was issued in Eugene. According to police reports: Culbert and a second football recruit, Marvin Johnson of Compton, Calif., were staying with Kevin Garrett, a University of Oregon football player, in his dorm room on the weekend of Jan. 13. The two recruits asked if they could come inside two females’ room on the dorm floor and “hang out,” the two females told police. Once inside, Culbert asked one female to take off her pants, which were wet from walking home in the rain. Both men then began patting the beds. One female sat at the end of her bed, and Culbert sat up and pulled her closer, saying something the females found offensive. One female told the recruits they were disrespecting them and needed to leave. Culbert stood up, shut the door and turned off the lights. One female tried to open the door, but Culbert blocked her path with his body and pushed her away. Culbert pushed the female against the wall, using his left hand to pin her shoulder to the wall and grabbing her crotch with his right hand. The female told him to stop and tried to push him away. As this was happening, Johnson sat next to the second female on her bed, wrapping his arm around her stomach and rubbing her thighs and crotch. When she told him to stop and tried to get up, Johnson stiffened his arm around her, keeping her in place on the bed. The first female was able to free herself from Culbert and open the door. She pushed him out of the room and turned on the light. The second female said Johnson released her and left the room when her roommate pushed Culbert out. Culbert’s arraignment is set for May 30 in Lane County Circuit Court in Eugene. Quote Link to comment

I guess it's attempted rape - I don't know they did leave. I think they just copped a feel - A good defense lawyer could get them out of this. Quote Link to comment

husker rob
what I would like to know is why did it take so long for the girls to file a report with the police, or if they did right away why did it take so ling for the DA to issue an arrest warrent? Quote Link to comment
Hunter94
if you remember, the same deal happened last year wth the Texas trio... for whatever reason, alot of this stuff gets held back....local politics, school influence, you name it......corruption runs rampant in most local law enforcement juristictions.....bribery and heavy handed influence from local officials is nothing new....doesn't happen everywhere, but enough for it to seem common place... hunter Quote Link to comment
Eric the Red
Ducks recruit reaches plea agreement The women in the case say the lesser charges reflect the player's actions Tuesday, June 13, 2006 AARON FENTRESS University of Oregon football recruit Marvin Johnson, who along with another prospect faced charges of first-degree sex abuse and first-degree burglary, on Monday reached a plea deal on lesser charges with the Lane County District Attorney's office and will join the team for the coming season. Johnson pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of criminal trespassing and harassment in Lane County Circuit Court through his attorney, Bill Honsowetz of Eugene. Johnson, a defensive back from Dominguez High School in Compton, Calif., did not appear in court. He was sentenced to five years' probation and 30 days in jail. Honsowetz said, however, that Johnson could receive road crew service, be assigned to a forest work camp or be held under electronic surveillance instead of serving jail time. Johnson and defensive back Major Culbert of San Pedro, Calif., who signed with Nebraska, were accused of sexually assaulting two Oregon female students at Barnhart Hall, an off-campus dormitory, during a recruiting trip. First-degree sex abuse is a Measure 11 crime, meaning that if convicted, Johnson would have been sentenced to a minimum of 75 months in jail. Honsowetz, who took over Johnson's case about a week ago from public defender Bill Ray, said the two victims helped make the plea deal happen by stating that the lesser charges were more appropriate for the actual actions of Johnson. "The girls were instrumental in that," Honsowetz said. "They went to the D.A. handling the case." Deputy District Attorney Bob Gorham and the two victims, whose names have been withheld by authorities, could not be reached for comment. Oregon coach Mike Bellotti was not available for comment Monday. According to the police report, the incident occurred early Jan. 14 and was reported Jan. 27. The incident occurred after the two recruits went to the dorm room of the victims and then refused to leave after the women felt the two recruits had disrespected them, the report said. Then, according to the police report, Culbert closed the dorm room door and turned out the light, and both recruits made sexual advances toward the women before the women were able to get them to leave. Oregon signed Johnson on Feb. 1 but ceased recruitment of Culbert. Aaron Fentress: 503-221-8211; aaronfentress@news.oregonian.com.
