RedRex
RADAR, where's that GIF you posted of McMullen? Shocking. This guy was a 4-star we pulled out of Ohio from the Buckeyes and a ton of other major teams. It was a huge recruiting win. What on earth happened to him? He added about 30 lbs. He was never great, but he's gotten worse. I never understood why they did that. He looks more DT than DE now. Hope they don't do the same with other guys....or have they already done so? Natter, King , Keels, Stoltenberg, anyone watching the weight totals for them? Quote Link to comment
RADAR
I didn't want to call anyone out by name, but yeah, its not been good. Not at the end of last year, and not at all this year. We need Freedom and Gangwish on the field at the same time. You could take that little image above, and make another one almost every other play. It's really, really bad. And I'm being polite. Gangwish is not the best athlete, but he would bring effort, I hope we get him back soon. Quote Link to comment
zoogs
Oh yeah, Keels. What in the world ever happened with him? JUCO DE, thought he was a starter at one point. The other DEs, we had a whole bunch of them in the same couple of classes. I think a few of them might even emerge, but there seem to also be some total misses there, and it's biting us. Not to be a broken record, but it's seemed for some time now that we have scholarship numbers beyond the mileage we should be getting out of them at the position. Quote Link to comment

Not a chance he's 280. Quote Link to comment

Not sure who's idea it was to get this big, but it was a bad idea. 2 Quote Link to comment
Apathy
Once all of our LB's are healthy, why don't they move Marcus Newby to DE to help with some sort of pass rush. Newby did play DE last year and rotated in and out with Gangwish while Randy was injured. Quote Link to comment

Kernal
Not the Davis twins -- Alex Davis. 2* guy from GA. 6'5, 225, something like that. Got to have some kind of chance at a pass rush, right? I'm not opposed to the Davis twins either if they are ready, but it's that edge rusher type we need more than anything. Right, here's the vine: https://vine.co/v/exwiiQtWYEd Someone said McMullen is lucky there even exists a P5 team where he can start. Unfortunately, that assessment looks spot on. I'm not saying Greg McMullen is the best DE in the world, but that vine is of a designed stunt, not a normal speed rush, and it's a quick pass so the play is over before he even gets around inside. On the very next play, McMullen's persistence notches a QB hurry on third down forcing USM to punt. 3 Quote Link to comment
wanderful
I hadn't been watching him too closely this season and was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that stunt play. But from that same user's vine, here are two plays from the Miami game where he looks slow off the ball and generally unenthused. https://vine.co/v/ePu3pMAA1HU EDIT: Actually, this vine user has a lot of videos of McMullen looking mediocre: https://vine.co/v/eFjpOdD2IIt https://vine.co/v/eFDPJjJHn50 1 Quote Link to comment
RADAR
Looking at those, McMullen is a full step slower than everyone else on the line. Quote Link to comment

But also, it'd be pretty easy to pick out four of five plays of every single player that make them look silly. And as illustrated earlier, you have to look at all their film and weigh it all out. I don't study the DEs during the game, but I'm sure McMullen has had a few real nice plays too. He was credited with a forced fumble against Southern Miss. On the other hand, some people I respect are also questioning his play so who knows. I'm not saying a change shouldn't be made if we have a better alternative. But I hate throwing players under the bus without knowing what's going on with them. McMullen deserves fans support for the effort he does put in, even if it's not starter-caliber. He doesn't deserve social media ridicule from guys who break a sweat getting off the couch to grab the chip bowl. This mini-rant isn't directed at you wanderful, just throwing it out there. No worries, I didn't think you were ranting at me. I'm not calling McMullen out in any way. Like you said, one could easily just take someone's five worst plays and slap them together to make that player look worse than he is. I haven't really noticed McMullen much this season, good or bad. Conversely, Freedom seems to be a playmaker, and Malik still seems to be getting wicked penetration on plays he's not double teamed. Quote Link to comment
