  1. I found part of your problem, at least. You predicted a first year coach would take the Huskers UNDEFEATED to the CCG where we would lose to OSU. That is an incredibly lofty expectation with a new staff. Probably need to put the brakes on unrealistic hopes. We got rid of the previous staff because they couldn't get it done, so there were obviously things that needed to be changed or fixed. Expecting those changes to happen all at once, in the first year, is a silly hope.
  2. I was one of many who said that, and I still say and believe it. I had a suspicion that the first year would be less than 8 or 9 wins. I am not surprised. Many others said the same, but I guess they didn't really believe it was possible or could happen. Not to our beloved Huskers! My personal hope is always to see the team and the individual players all playing at the highest level they can attain. To live up to their potential, as single players, and as a team. If they do that and still lose, that's fine in my book, but we gotta get them playing to their individual best ability and highest ability as a team. So far that has not happened. I am willing to wait it out for another couple years. I do not know if this is the right staff. I do know that 5 games, and all the losses being by the razor's edge, is way too soon for final judgment. Had we ended up on the other side of that very thin razor's edge and won em all, we'd be talking about the same things, I imagine. We'd still be concerned with the same aspects of the game, but we would be calling Riley a genius, a new TO. We have been on the bad end of a few games. It happens. Yesterday the Top 10 was decimated, too. At the end of the year, we'll know more. At the end of next year, I will feel comfortable trying to gauge what we have in this staff and team. But not until then.
  3. I would prefer the fanbase not make fools of ourselves. Riley is 5 games in. Whether he works out or not, I don't know. But when big money, much bigger than your few hundred dollar plane idea, starts moving, change will occur. We're obviously not terribly afraid of change as a group. We canned a 9-10 win coach.
  4. Funny. Since I have made a prediction, I now fully expect an official announcement from Illinois that there were exactly 20,001 NU fans in attendance. Whenever I make sweeping statements, I end up on the far side of ridicule.
  5. I doubt it will be 20k. That's the kind of number you'd expect if Nebraska were in the hunt for something or expected to be in the hunt. It may look like a lot, depending on what Illinois fans number, but 20k seems like a giant fantasy.
  6. Completely agree. The criticism was staggering, but unwarranted. He looked amazing today. Now, about the secondary . . .
  7. And he's having a GAME. Wish we'd scored some more TD's though. That is concerning,
  8. Who is BJ Day? Never heard of the guy. Anyway, my only hope/expectation with the new staff was that we would play to our best potential, that the team would know the plays and execute them as well as they could. That we would be competitive and able to say that we only lost to teams that were clearly better than the Huskers. My expectations are in tatters, not because we lost any game, but because we obviously have not played as well as we should have. I hope this improves dramatically before the end of the year. I have never based my hopes on wins/losses, but rather on the team's ability to play their individual positions and as a whole team. So far, none of that has occurred, except sporadically.
  9. HEY, what you got against PIZZA?!?
  10. Err, yeah. About that 14-15 year old person. Sorry about him/her. Most of us love the game of CFB. Sometimes we are on the losing side, but most of us try to act with grace about winning or losing. I personally was heartbroken and simultaneously happy for BYU. When the BYU player hugged THE REF I smiled and chuckled out loud in happiness for the young man, and the team, as that moment encapsulated just how much this meant to them. Sure, I'd rather have had it go our way, but it was an OUTSTANDING game for CFB fans. It had a little of everything that makes CFB my favorite sport and was one helluva way to kick off the season. Sorry about the loss of Taysom, and good luck to BYU the rest of the season!
  11. If I had to pick the main things that caught my eye: Taller receivers More experience NU kicking game was less that great (loss of, what, 6 points right there?) A little better training or luck on the final play. I don't see any of these as lethal to our team. And with a first year coach, we'll improve. On a slightly larger front, we have GOT to have a running game that is at least capable. Doesn't have to be all-world, but gosh, we gotta be able to run at least occasionally to inspire some fear of the run.
  12. Posted Today, 11:33 AM teachercd, on 08 Sept 2015 - 12:28 PM, said: +1. We shouldn't be lauding our head coach for having a positive attitude, that should be the expectations of the job. Totally AGREE! And how sad has it been that we have not been able to expect a positive attitude for these past many years. I have a couple years in mind to let Riley run amok, unless wheels fall completely off. Which, imho, did NOT happen in the BYU game though others probably differ.
  13. If someone will assist me with my pads and wheel me out to the turf, I'll be happy to cheer you on. As long as there is bourbon available, of course.
  14. Losing at least 4 is hardly the same as winning at least 9. And I differ on the 9 win minimum idea. 9 wins is just fine. As long as the losses are not inexplicable blowouts of the 60-14 type. If they are hard fought losses and we are actually contesting the game with a chance to win, that's fine. If we are blown out of 2-3 games a year AND are on the ropes with McNeese State too, THAT is bad. Since that's our latest reality, I plan to judge progress based on those ideas. If we only win 9 (or 10) this year but are playing at the top of our ability I will consider it a great season. On the other hand, if we win 9 or 10 but barely squeak by much less talented teams and still see blowouts, that is a failure. Heck, we could lose more than in the past and depending on the circumstances, I would call it a success. Or WIN more than in previous years but consider it a failed year because we just didn't play as well as we could have.
  15. He's getting tons of press here in Tampa, that's for sure. Kenny Bell, also on the Bucs, is out for the rest of preseason with an injury. I don't like the sound of that. Kenny has always been a stellar player but seems to end up in weird, gyrating positions as he catches. I hope he has a long career and that this isn't the sign of times to come. It'll be interesting to see what happens here after so many wasted seasons. I haven't really watched the Bucs for years, since ownership pretty much told the fans to screw off around a decade ago. I may tune in for a few games this year.
  16. It seems the kids take their emotional cues from the coaches. With Bo, it seemed that the more the spit flew the smaller our chances at a win in tough games. His nerves rubbed off on the team, if you will, making THEM nervous or out of sorts. Sort of like when you were a child and if Dad was having a bad day, then dammit, EVERYONE would have to have a bad day. Not the best analogy, I know. Back in the TO years, it was a bit of the opposite. The tougher the opponent, the calmer Tom seemed. He was a reassuring legend/father stalking the sidelines to just make sure everyone was performing at their highest ability. He was never a spit-spraying, cussing machine that grabbed player's helmets and chewed them a new ass. But if the player/team was NOT performing to the level expected (and this was usually some game where we were already up by 50 over Kansas or ISU) you'd see Tom express as much emotion as he was capable of. This seemed mostly driven by seeing the players slack off once they knew they had it in the bag. Bad discipline, in other words. That is one of the many things I loved about Tom, that I think Riley shows similarity to. As far as the games, I just hope we play to our fullest potential each and every game. If the game is lost, let it be lost because the other team was actually better, not because we didn't perform our best. Let no question hang over the game about our discipline. I hope we exceed 9 or 10, but if it's less I'm cool with that, so long as we actually play as well as the team is capable of in each game.
  17. Speaking as another Floridian Husker (Tampa): Miami still gets oodles of talent and top commits. They may finally get rid of Golden this year. If that happens, I'll be glad this series happened now instead of 5 years from now. Also hobbling the Canes is an admin that has seemingly decided a university should be more known for its academics than for its football programs cocaine and hookers habit. That's probably a good thing. But the moment they get an admin that wants football to be strong, and a coach who can manage that team in a city with more vices than Vegas, they will be back. It may take some time. And maybe the admin likes things as they are now, and is happy to have a clean(relatively) team that won't be on TV much outside of game time. No more Thug U. I remain glad we got em before Golden's departure. And with all that said, I have serious doubts that the Huskers win at Miami. I'll be hoping so, but not surprised with a loss. They remain loaded with talent and a couple sparks of genius will make this more than we're bargaining for.
  18. One fan type (at least) missing: The Used To Live/Grew Up In Nebraska Fan: The legions of Husker fans that have Husker blood but live among hotbeds of other teams. We gather at the Temple of Devaney (our nearest sports bar) by the thousands every game day during the fall, all across the globe. This is me, and many others I know here in Florida!
  19. I knew we were supposedly having a rivalry with Iowa. I did not realize we had a trophy for it. Or for Wisconsin. Or that the games had corporate sounding names designed to offend none. I like the broken chair thing the best. That one is awesome.
  20. Well, to be fair, the Clones DID surprise some damn good Husker teams here and there over the years. On the other hand, isn't Iowa something like 4-12 against ISU in the last 15 years? I'd hate to have a trip to ISU be described as 'tricky' if I were a Hawks fan, though. That's just embarrassing.
  21. I don't care much for this 'rivalry'. Maybe it will develop over time. But so far, it seems based on geography, that we are neighbors, more than anything. I'd rather end the season against one of the other history-laden blue blood programs in the league like OSU or Michigan. But we're stuck in the West. Wisconsin would be better, since there are more similarities. They don't have the history either, but at least they have some decent recognition. This would be like ending the Big 12 seasons with a 'rivalry' against Texas Tech or someone similar. Just not too much to get excited about most of the time.
  22. An in-law of mine is one of the few genuine graduates of Miami. He takes the games WAY too seriously. After last year's Husker win, he wouldn't speak to me for weeks on social media. And admitted the loss was the reason. You think we're hungry for a return to glory? If my relative is any indication, Miami is maybe even hungrier. Living in Tampa, I see mostly Seminole and Gator fans, since Miami is the smallest of the bunch. But if they show up for this game the crowd could be a factor. Don't laugh. Miami and Nebraska have so much history I wouldn't be surprised to see a great turnout for this game. I thought about going down, for about 5 seconds. But I have a huge TV, a fridge, a pool, and palm trees right here at my place. Looking forward to this one!
  23. Underestimate? Most of us hope for a return to glory and championships. But that is tempered by the recent miracle comeback wins that should have been huge Husker wins in most of our minds. Last year we nearly had our own version of the App State/Michigan game. And BYU has been (in my mind anyway) a P5 team for decades. That the Cougars haven't landed in a major conference (yet) has more to do with location and religion than football acumen. I will be very satisfied if we win this game at all, even if it is a squeak of the teeth win. I also won't be surprised with a loss. Or a blowout in either direction. Our new coach is starting with a stick of dynamite for sure.
  24. Crazy. Saw the headline and was certain this was part of the Waco thing. That town is either completely nuts or can't catch a break. I haven't been there, but just seeing the word Waco conjures up some kind of Cormac Mccarthy nightmare dreamscape for me. This guy, never heard of him. I always wonder about the minds of these types. I cannot imagine ever killing someone in anger. Self defense of myself, family or friends--yeah, I get that and could do it. I wouldn't like it and would be mentally messed up for quite a while. But I don't think I could ever be part of a hivemind that went around killing people and tearing things up like these gangster types do. Of course, I like living. And I like living outside a cell, where I can go get a nice steak whenever I want. Sorry for rambling.
  25. This is disgusting to me! Your wife's priorities are ALL mixed up. After all, you have an anniversary every SINGLE year. It's not every year we can go to a game in South Beach. If I were you, my friend, I would be considering my future options and planning accordingly. It's never too late to get remarried. Heck, I know one guy who has been married 7 times and has 13 kids (with a 14th on the way). And he's only 42.
