  1. This is all something that somehow, TO really understood. I firmly believe that if the Makovicka brothers were coming through school right now, they wouldn't even get looked at because they come from such a small school. Nebraska coaches that didn't grow up here and know the state just don't understand where and how to look for players in areas like that.
  2. I have always banged my head against the wall with the thought that everyone ends the regular season. Then, privately ran bowls then choose who plays whom based on what conference is alligned with that bowl (prior to the season) and what team has the fan base that travels the best. Then....somehow out of this, a champion is supposed to be named by people who, in no way shape or form, can watch every single game and know everything about every team and conference and for some reason their opinion is like God in crowning who is the NC. But...hey....if, God forbid, these teams were to actually play on the field, some people believe that...well...that really doesn't tell you who is the best because it's just one game....bla bla bla..... It has been a complete joke of a system and for some reason, some people have convinced themselves that THIS is what has made college football so great. Have an 8 team playoff with conference champions. Like someone said, the CCG is essentially the round of 16. If you can't win your conference, then you don't deserve to win the NC.
  3. It's nice knowing we got someone that one of our conference rivals really wanted.
  4. I thought about this too. Obviously Garrison doesn't have a problem with how Cotton wants the O line coached.
  5. I do find it funny that Footballscoop is the one breaking this news. I am surprised that Garrison is going with Cotton. Maybe that puts down the rumors that Garrison was held back by Cotton on how he really wanted to coach the O line.
  6. Well, we are in the dead period now so he can concentrate on filling the staff. Does anyone expect at least some announcements soon?
  7. When is Europe going to get disgusted enough to go do something about it?
  8. Agree 100% +1 Also like the post by the OP, good summary of Nebraska through almost all of my adult life (other than the part mentioned above). It ended on a more positive spin then I though it would. Good post. Also +1 Imagine the 2006 offense with the 2009 defense. Hmmmm......
  9. none are outstanding or true duel threats, but let's finally get them coached up and see what we have here...... Opinion made after having a coach that wasn't good at developing them. At least Armstrong and Stanton were highly thought of players out of HS.
  10. Wisconsin In-State Commits: 2014 - 6 2013 - 7 2012 - 3 2011 - 8 2010 - 8 2009 - 5 2008 - 7 2007 - 5 2006 - 6 2005 - 4 2004 - 8 2003 - 10 2002 - 8 Wisconsin took 6.5 in-state kids per year over that range. Nebraska took 3.5. Wisconsin has over three times the population of Nebraska. So we're actually taking more per capita. Plus a lot of those Wisconsin kids are two-star rated. Perhaps a lot of them developed into contributors but I don't have enough info to say one way or the other. Hmmm....I actually stand corrected. I went to prove you wrong and I somewhat proved myself wrong. LINK According to this two deep depth chart for this year for the 5 O line spots: 4 - Wisconsin 2 - Ohio 1 - Minnesota 1 - Illinois 1 - Washington 1 - Maryland That's 8 of the 10 spots that they locked up with either Wisconsin kids or surrounding states. LINK Contrast that with Nebraska's two deep: 4 - Nebraska 2 - Texas 1 - Colorado 1 - Ohio 1 - Arizona 1 - Illinois That makes 5 spots coming from Nebraska or surrounding states. I still believe we should be pulling more from states like Iowa, Missouri, Kansas...etc. My comment wasn't that all these kids need to come from inside the borders of Nebraska. But, we need to be locking down recruiting of big beefy linemen from surrounding states in the midwest. This obviously shows we have been doing some of that. I believe we can develop it even more. Hopefully a new O line coach can make these kids even better than we have seen lately.
  11. Must say....this shocks me. Hopefully as time passes the excitement of their visit wears off and he realizes playing at Nebraska is better for him.
  12. A QB in todays world needs to be able to run an effective passing attack. That doesn't mean he needs to be able to pass the ball 40 times a game for 350 yards every game. He needs to be able to move the ball when needed through the air by hitting open receivers. That gets you a decent offense. Now, put a QB in the game that can do that AND beat you with his legs and you have a deadly attack. Look at most of the most successful college QBs over the last 5-10 years and most of them have this combination. I believe we have the talent in the stable right now to do that. We have Armstrong, Stanton, Bush, Darlington, Fyfe. One or two of those guys are going to develop over the next 12 months to be an effective passer. All of them are known to be athletic enough to beat you with their legs if needed. I'm excited to see what they can do.
  13. Naaaa. It was all county sheriff department at the scene.
  14. This just doesn't make sense. Why would USC and Alabama regularly recruit here when they have all that talent in their backyard that they won't have to compete with Nebraska for? However, FWIW Strong had USC, UCLA, and Oregon interested until they looked into him more. The talent is there, maybe not 5*, but 3* from Nebraska is better than 3* from California because they understand the tradition and will play their ass off for NU. If the player is good enough, other schools will recruit them. The reason you don't see schools like USC, Bama and such recruiting Nebraska kids is because they don't think they are very good. The football that is played at the HS level in Nebraska is not very good and the players aren't as developed as a majority of kids from other states where football is a very big thing. That is why we recruit the way we do and should continue to do so if we want to stay competitive. This is an uninformed opinion. Is it the same level as the top of Cali, Texas, and Florida? No. Is Nebraska going to get the best players in Cali, Texas, and Florida? Nope. That is why you can't even let somebody that MIGHT pan out get away.Coaches want the staff to send somebody to their school besides the guy in charge of the walk-on program. There are players that can play at NU, the problem is the previous staff couldn't develop talent well so they rarely reached on an in-state project. They wouldn't offer a kid like a Trey Carr. He has started all year at SDSU at CB as a true freshman. Would he start at NU? No, not right away. Could they have developed him? Maybe. He also had offers from ISU and KU. Chose SDSU because a former HS assistant of his was there and he thought he could play right away. He would of jumped on an NU offer. How is it uninformed? I used uninformed because I do not believe you are unintelligent. I just don't think you understand how much those home grown kids meant to the backbone of this program (back when we had a coaching staff that knew how to develop kids). This whole thread has turned into comparing local kids to the studs of the class. That is not how this works. You take the local kid instead of the bust from Texas. Nobody wants to look at the busts from other states, only our local ones. These "backyard" players could easily be a special teams guy and be a back-up competing as a senior for PT like so many of these kids from out of state have done. When this place was rolling, it was on the backs of Nebraska boys that actually were developed by our coaching staff. They weren't usually the studs, they were that line with a nasty streak. They were the FB and TE. They were the DT and Special teams guys. Don't give me this football has changed bull crap either. That is irrelevant. I am excited to have a guy that will want to develop HS football coaches, bring in high-character Nebraska boys that live and breathe Husker football, and ACTUALLY DEVELOP some talent. We haven't had that since the late 90s, and I don't think it is a coincidence we were also pretty damn good at the same time. The players in the 90's were developed because we had the BEST strength and conditioning program in the nation along with one of the best coaches ever, not because they were great athletes. Fast forward 20 yrs and now about EVERY big time school has as good or better program as we do. We can't take those 250lb farm kids anymore and put 50lbs of muscle on them and steamroll people like we think. We need to get these kids that are already developed in order for us to compete. I'm not against Nebraska kids getting offered at all, just think that there aren't enough good players every year in the state to justify taking 3-4+ in a class. Explain to me how we can't add 50 lbs to a 250 lb player and make them a stellar lineman? You pick the most athletic 250 lb player you can, give them a scholarship, redshirt them, train them the right way, who knows? By the way, we didn't have the best strength and conditioning program in the nation by the mid-90s. Others had caught up. We just identified talent better and developed that. Sounds like Riley can do that. I am not asking for 25 Nebraska kids every year, that is crazy. Four or five? Sounds about right. During our fans with Wisconsin it was said that Wisconsin has made a living taking More local Midwestern kids and making them into great Olines. No reason Nebraska shouldn't be doing some of this.
  15. It's more than just offering scholarships. It's a matter of the staff realizing they have an asset here that is not being used. Work with the local coaches do they are developing players the right way for what the coaches want in Lincoln. I would love for Riley to actually work with HS coaches here teaching them how to develop the QB talent.
  16. It is impossible to tell how each player will develop under a coach that knows how to teach and develop QBs. I continue to shake my head in amazement at people who just "know" all the other players will improve and TA won't. That defies logic.
  17. We are really suffering with our two big men both injured.
  18. That's a great story. Now here is a sad one. Just this weekend a 21 year old was driving in the same area I was driving. He lost control on the gravel, went in the ditch, rolled his car and was killed. I will continue to tell my kids to drive on the road where it is the safest.
  19. You guys do realize that's not the theory behind this...right? The theory is that if you pay more, you get better coaches. Nobody is saying if you pay the same coaches more, they all of a sudden become better.
  20. I agree with the conference champions (Big5) getting automatic bids. You could have a conference champion some year with 3 or 4 losses but they could actually be the best team in the country due to the difficulty of their conference (or they could suck and lose in the first round). You would have been completely fine in 2012 granting Wisconsin an automatic berth because they won the B1G despite being unranked? You're fine with a team that doesn't even win it's own division being in the NC discussion and game but have a problem with a team that wins a Big 5 conference in a CCG. That to me is a really really odd thought process.
  21. I don't think there is one sentence in that post I can agree with.
  22. You know??? I was thinking about this. I thought Nebraska had a similar type law so I was surprised they announced our hire as quickly as they did.
  23. So, you don't like conference champions making the playoffs by earning it on the field but then turn around and say you don't like a system where there is personal biases. Hmmmm....
