  1. He was 5-24 as the head coach of Kansas, and in his final season, won two games before going on a 10 game losing streak. While I think you could definitely argue that it was Kansas, keep the expectations low and give him more time, one can also completely understand the argument for letting him go. Winning five games in two seasons is pretty poor. They didn't put up with Weis either - he only won three games in his second year. Something NUance and I were talking about, and I have the same question for you - what makes you think Gill would've been a better recruiter than Pelini? Gill probably would've been a better face than Pelini and I don't think anyone would argue that. But, outside of character, Pelini's coaching background was better and he had more to pitch in this regard (a championship ring, great defensive reputation, decent NFL coaching career). And, this is just a guess, but I'm guessing Pelini's connections were better than Gill's just by nature of Pelini's coaching footprint. I mean, when you're sitting in a home with a recruit, character goes a long way. But, so does the 'what can you do for me' mentality on both sides of the aisle. Just curious on your thoughts here. Good thoughts - Yes Bo had the ring as DC and could say he coached at some pretty great schools - NU, OU, LSU all pretty good on a recruiter's resume. I still think the character issue is a big draw for the parents. The 'rings' gets the kid's attention, the coach's character and reputation as an individual gets the parent's attention - and they are the ones who 'pay the bills'. While Bo had the rings, Gill could counter that he played for and coached wt a Hall of Fame coach and was a part of national championship teams as an assistant coach (thus he had rings but he wasn't a DC or OC at the time). He could also tell the "Nebraska Story" and sell it better than Bo ever could - because he lived it, was a vital part of it and fully embraced it. Regarding Kansas - It isn't just Gill. If coaches aren't' given the opportunity beyond 2 years to succeed, Kansas will never improve. Turning something around takes time regardless if it is Gill or Weis. We were concern about firing Solich and Bo after 9 win seasons and wondered if we could get a quality coach - good grief - how can Kansas ever improve & land a quality coach now if they don't give someone time to succeed. The one successful year of Mangino's made big heads out of the Kansas administrators and all of a sudden they thought they were a traditional power.
  2. B. Rudd Mack brothers "Its Schlesinger! Its Schlesinger" just for that one call and touchdown alone. Cory will live in the heart of many as the pure image of what a fullback should be and for the beauty of the 'trap' play run to perfection. Johnny the Jet for the most famous call in Husker history "Man, Women and Child that put them in the isle" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJOlzDJiaDw
  3. My 1st choice was Paul Johnson - then at Navy now at GT. He's done pretty well down there. I then wanted Bo over Turner just because the D was so bad. In hindsight, I think Turner would have been a better recruiter and a much better face on NU football. He did have HC experience which would have help in the learning curve. I would expect him to hire a qualified DC and maybe one who could make adjustment in a way Bo never could. Record: with better recruiting and having a personality that didn't melt down on the sideline and affect players - I would think he would have been 10-3 most years instead of 9-4 like Bo - 1 game better per year. Just maybe we might have won one of those Big 12 championships. Kansas was foolish not giving him more time.
  4. Interesting letter written by an atheist to WLC. The writer feels trapped in his nihilism and finds atheism not an answer he wants to accept or live by nor can he accept 'faith' as an alternative at this point. He is an intelligent guy obviously caught in the struggle between 2 world views. Interesting read and response from WLC. http://www.reasonablefaith.org/you-have-ruined-my-life-professor-craig
  5. nice. Are you ready for some football!!???? I am.
  6. I always remember that one video and was thinking about it when I read the OP. Suh - so much pressure, so disruptive against the pass and run. Made the linebackers that much better.
  7. Gerry on D as he is the standout in the back. Collins is great and will be in the NFL (like Gerry) but he also has VV next to him. Gerry is heads and shoulders above the others in the back. Loose him and receivers will run wild - plus he is very good on run support. DPE may be the indispensable one on O with our new O. While TA may seem the most obvious, I think DPE will provide the explosiveness and multi-option player that will stretch out the D and make room for others to excel. We don't know who our starting RB will be, so DPE is our most dangerous threat - a threat that will keep the D honest - can't put 9 in the box.
  8. Because we are all extremely intelligent and have intelligent things to say! (and our wives don't want to hear our childish discussion during dinner)
  9. Per this article, NU ends up 11th out of 14 teams for all sports ranking. My first reaction is - how is this possible with the many upgrades the various programs have had over the past few years in facilities, spending, etc. One poster blamed it on Tom as AD - not making quality decisions in the coaches he had hired. The results are now coming home to roost. Could it be that we underestimated the Big 10's completion and underestimated our strength? I think coming in, most of us thought we'd win a conf championship by now in football and would surely be dominate in baseball. Maybe it has taken us this long to change recruiting, style of play, etc in many of the sports - I'm not sure of the reason but being 11th seems to be a great under achievement to say the least. Maybe as football goes so goes the rest of the sports. SE notes our progress in academics etc, which is good and should continue, but we're missing something on the win/loss side. What do you attribute it to? http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/football/steven-m-sipple-after-rough-year-eichorst-says-nu-has/article_2a306c47-811c-5bef-a886-ce0f9d042605.html
  10. A very good story about the 1st great election crisis (Forget Florida hanging chads - that was child's play in comparison) A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Campaign Paperback – June 10, 2008 by Edward J. Larson (Author) Also reading this book. Keller does a good job discussing views (various religions, cultures, belief systems - including atheism) on the topic and presents strengths and weaknesses of the views. The 2nd half of the book - he makes it practical with the purpose of helping us as we individually walk through our own version of pain and/or suffering. How do deal with issue and go forward wt hope. Good book to go with the topic of ' God and Evil/Suffering' going on in the politics/religion forum. I just found this book a week ago and am about half way through it. Walking with God through Pain and Suffering Hardcover – October 1, 2013 by Timothy Keller (Author)
  11. Thanks Knapp for all of your hard work on HB. You were a fair Mod and thanks for being patient with me! I've enjoyed our exchanges and even when I didn't agree wt your posts they gave me something to think about and for that you deserve and a . You helped me to moderate some of my views through your insight. Great job & continued best wishes.
  12. Maybe more states should operate this way - less party control due the the type of legislature structure that Nebraska has. While the legislative outcomes noted in this article tend to be more liberal this time around, it probably evens out in the long run. The one house legislature forces senators to research the bills and not tote a party line - a novel concept - politicians researching bills that they have to vote on. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_NEBRASKAS_SURPRISING_GOP?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2015-05-31-11-48-22
  13. Big RED indeed. Big 8 knows you don't give no lip to the mighty Big Red.
  14. I'm a "HAIR ON FIRE" GUY I don't want the O to know where we are coming from. I want the O to be constantly making mental mistakes because of our pressure. I want to hit wt the and the and to the way we played D in the 1990s - fast and furious (I think Knapp had a thread on that recently) and give the O from every direction. I don't want to but I will: With Bo, we tried to be smart, we had a thick playbook, we were complex & technical in every way. In the end it was our D that was as they kept trying to over-think everything - leaving defenders out of position and not ready for the next play. It is time to face - Bo didn't know, when it came to the big games - our D was the worse when we played against competent teams and coaching. So it time for some real and time to and leave no doubt who is in control. Instead of reacting on D, it is time to act and forget what the O gives us but force the O to play our game. That is my on the subject. I'm looking forward to a new look and I expect to see a wild front 4 messing up the offensive timing and efficiency.
  15. Cool - that will impress the moms and dads as well - my kid can play football and actually learn something.
  16. I remember this play and I remember because I knew at that point, Scott Frost was going to become something special at NU. He got the monkey off his back wt this run against a highly regarded Washington team.
  17. Eric Crouch winning run against ND OK guys which code do you copy to get the actual video!!!??
  18. The music in the video sends chills down my spine also - tunnel walk time
  19. What a great block at 1:21 by the fullback to set Rozier free. I miss those days
  20. Good advice. I think I'll concentrate on the upper body without placing more weight on the legs.
  21. NU over, Wisc under, Michigan under - they were so bad last year - I don't think they turn the corner that fast
  22. OU - Big 12 wrecked that rivalry by not protecting it FSU - just to say we've beat all of the Florida schools ND - Tradition vs Tradition USC - we've lost to them the last 2x we've played them - I'd like to see how Riley does against them GT - it would be interesting to see how we'd play against our old play book - the triple option; plus recruiting LSU - recruiting hot bed Bama - to be considered elite you have to beat elite - need the opportunity to do so KSU, MO - Big 8 foes who I wish were still on our schedule UT - no not that UT - Univ of Tulsa - so I could see the Huskers here in Tulsa! OSU - no not the Big 10 type or Pac 12 type but Okla State - last Husker game I saw in person was at OKla State
  23. I thought the rest of the article was good as well and have copied it here:
  24. This may be old news, but I found this article interesting. A pulse weapon that takes out electronics with injury to people and buildings. I'm sure it will spark another arms race but isn't that what the industrial military complex is all about? I'm more concerned by an actual EMP nuclear bomb being exploded by a rouge nation (Iran, N Korea) above our country and taking out our electrical grid. http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/computer-killing-weapon-missile/2015/05/26/id/646871/
