  1. That's not very surprising. On the ACT a score of 28 is a 90th percentile for the USA, and a very good score IMO. For Cornell, their middle 50% of scores for admitted students is from 30-34. That means that a score of 30 would be the 25th percentile for Cornell, or a better score than 25% of admitted students. 28 or 29 probably is already about the lowest they would accept, and students with those scores would have to be exceptional in other aspects of the application. https://magoosh.com/hs/act/about-the-act/2016/act-percentiles/ https://blog.prepscholar.com/whats-a-good-sat-act-score-for-the-ivy-league-whats-the-lowest-score-i-can-get-in-with
  2. Watching the Peach Bowl I was amazed by how well UCF's undersized players tackled in open space. It's amazing what good tackling fundamentals will do for a defense, regardless of system/athleticism. For that reason alone I am optimistic. Add to that Frost's obsession with speed in recruiting. Speed kills.
  3. 1. Jan 1 should have been the National Championship game. 2. There is plenty of time between the Conference Championships and Jan 1 to fit in an 8-team playoff. 3. Interest and viewership gets worse the longer the wait. Right now more football fans are gearing up for the NFL Playoffs than the CFP. 4. The lower bowls continue to be less and less relevant, and need to be replaced with 4-team or 8-team invitational Tournaments with early rounds on campuses. Way more money to be made by schools than going to 6-figure salaries of "Bowl Commissioners"
  4. Meh. I guess it doesn't do much for me. Interesting historically? Sure. Good for marketing? Not really.
  5. Q: ...It looks like you've been pursuing a lot of guys for the secondary. What have you seen ....your needs are in this recruiting period? A: ....Just looking at the roster, especially on the defense (backs), that's where you'd like to be somewhere in the 14-16 range, and we're hanging around the 9 range in the secondary, so obviously we've gotta get a few players there to make us whole. Right now we're trying to identify the best players possible, and the best fit for Nebraska. The way that Coach Frost wants the culture to be, the way the fans want the culture to be. People that will represent us both on and off the field. Players that everyone can be proud of. So I think the first need is: get the best guys possible. The second need is: Let's get each position whole with regard to scholarship numbers. Q: What has the reception been like (with recruits)? What does the N on the polo bring to you? A: Walking in with that shirt on brings immediate smiles to kids' faces. I think it excites people. Just about everybody we've talked to is very interested. The ones that we're probably not going to be in the game with are guys that have been recruited by another staff for two-plus years, and have developed a strong relationship with them. Those are the kind of kids that we want, that want relationships, and don't want to switch late. But a lot of these guys we've talked to in the past. Maybe we didn't think we could get them before, but now we think we can. We have relationships with some of these guys. Moving on, I think this will be an opportunity to recruit the best players in the country, regardless of where they're at in the country.
  6. Thanks for posting that. Here are some quotes I liked from the interview: Q: You're a midwest guy, right? (He's from Allison, IA) A: Yes, I'm a midwest guy. Aside from getting to be in a job I believe is the best job in the country, it's also an opportunity to get my wife and my children back close to grandma and grandpa. (which is probably long overdue)... We get to be back in the midwest.... We know how awesome the people are in the midwest, and how supportive they are of the team, and also of us as people. So we couldn't be more excited to get back there. Q: [at Northern Iowa] you were working with the offense, right? And he (Frost) was on the defensive side? A: Yeah. I had coached just about everything there, D-line, O-Line, Tight Ends, Running backs.... almost everything but the quarterback. In 1-AA Football you get new coaches a lot. Sometimes you just have to adapt and adjust..... I think that's pretty standard for a lot of young coaches. Getting to work on both sides of the ball makes you that much better wherever you end up.... It helps you get an understanding when you're breaking film down, watching other teams. I think its important for young guys to be on both sides of the ball...... Q: Your defenses at UCF have been known for taking the football away.... describe the (defensive) personality you've had with the Knights, and what you hope to bring to Nebraska. A: Being with an offensive head coach, you have to mirror his personality. Our (UCF's) personality on offense is a very aggressive, fast-paced offense that wants to score a lot of points.... ...This year they've been scoring a million points a game and going like wildfire.... Trust me, I want to keep yards down as much as the next guy, but sometimes when you play more plays, you play 3 or 4 extra games than everybody else in the country. Sometimes the yards aren't as manageable as you'd like them to be. But, for us, ...we need to minimize explosive plays, take the football away, and keep the points down. We've emphasized taking the football away, and we've done a great job of that... I think the kids buy into that. They want to play an aggressive style of defense just like Coach Frost wants to be aggressive on offense. (I'll add more in another post)
  7. Exactly. Just like nobody ever "wants" to join a cult, and yet many do.
  8. Walk-on scholarships are year-to-year, correct? That might be one way to get past the B1G oversign-by-three rule, anticipating post-spring transfers.
  9. Floor to ceiling IMO: 5 to 9 wins. I'll say 8-4 with going 4-1 in the last 5 games, carrying momentum into the recruiting home stretch.
  10. Solich administration: "what is social media?" Callahan admin: "I'm awesome. Who cares what those redneck fans are saying on the internet" Pelini admin: "They said what? - lemme see that. Pull that up. --- I can't believe the f@cking fairweather fans would post that sh!t. They can kiss my..... print that up so I can show the team!" Riley admin: "It's important that we keep a pulse on what the fans want, so we don't ruffle any feathers. Watch that site." Frost admin: "Stay off of social media, guys. I know these fans are passionate about football, but you have to stay focused" just a guess...
  11. There has to be a limit to how far this administration can go in NOT enforcing federal laws (i.e. the Clean Water Act/Clean Air Act). At some point citizen lawsuits or states' attorneys suits could force their hands, right?
  12. I'd like to see these years with the capital gains tax rate, too. Most of the top [insert percentage] richest people don't rely on an actual income. Not surprisingly, this rate is untouched in the current tax reform....
  13. 1. Removing corruption / special interests from politics. 2. Protecting our citizens from toxic pollution and disease. 3. Protecting our country's natural resources from destruction and exploitation. 3. Protecting workers' and consumers' rights. 4. Protecting and helping the most vulnerable members of our society. 4. Putting community interests above self interest. 5. Promote efficient and responsible government use of tax money. 6. Basing governmental policy on sound scientific principles and research-based conclusions. I think this is a good exercise. With my above goals/priorities, there are many different strategies to reach them. I need to stay open to both liberal and conservative strategies, as long as my values are consistent. For example: 1. I'm pretty socially liberal, but to me, there can be no justification for deficit spending. The only reason it happens is because of political expediency. 2. There are multiple schools of thought from respected economists. There really isn't consensus on whether supply-side economics can work or not. Therefore, I am not completely opposed to a conservative strategy there. Most conservative economists don't even like the Trump Plan, though.
  14. Good points. One other thing to factor in your decision is that the prestige of the program doesn't always translate into better, or higher paying jobs. An engineering degree, for example, is a somewhat standardized program with excellent wage potential basically anywhere in the country. An engineering degree from an accredited smaller school will still get you most of the same jobs as one from Purdue, Yale, or MIT. Plus, it probably costs a lot less than those schools. Most STEM degrees are similar in that way. Careers that are more in the "Liberal Arts" or "humanities" fields are much more worthwhile to find the best schools with regard to reputation and ranking. Here's a recent article about a study on the subject: https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/08/does-college-matter/400898/
  15. Perhaps you didn't catch my meaning.... never mind. I probably shouldn't elaborate.
  16. Well I can't think of what use you and your wife would have with a Husker Volleyball jersey.........
  17. Both Johnson and Matt Masker recently de-committed from SDSU to walk on at Nebraska. This makes me happy on multiple levels. Jacks fans are none too happy. Sends a big message, IMO. Frost is putting his money where his mouth is... ...maybe that's what all the money emojis over faces have been about?.....$$$
  18. If we were to hire another assistant on staff to do that, it would make more sense if they were below the head coach in rank, and learned from the head coach what he wants to see as far as talent evaluation. I get that Frost can't be everywhere and do everything, but his vision needs to be the "unified" vision. Just like he said in the intro presser.
  19. Wow! Amazing match! Amazing season! GBMFR!
  20. I didn't realize that walkons counted towards title IX numbers. That definitely qualifies as an obstacle. When coach Frost talked about sacrifices, I assumed he meant players turning down scholarships at other schools.
  21. Not playing the Bison (Bison is the plural). It's the Fighting Hawks. UND.
