Many here wanted McElwain so I'd say he was higher on our collective list. Sark was a bigger name available. Pretty sure most here would have preferred Narduzzi so yes to him. Frost definitely but SE wasn't interested. We should have at least checked with Patterson. So hiring CSU's coach or MSU's DC would have been a wow because they were mentioned on HB? Did Sark ever win more than 8 games at UW? I think most would have considered Narduzzi a wow hire. Pretty much the biggest-name coordinator. He went to Pitt so surely he would have come here if we offered. McElwain isn't really a wow but was high on a lot of people's lists. Sark was 5-7 his first year followed by three 7-6 years and was 9-4 his last year. But, you know, he didn't have as many resources there. If we had hired Narduzzi people would be pissed off that we hired another coordinator who had never been a HC and would be "learning on the job". Picking nits, Sark was 8-4 his last year at UW. He didn't coach the bowl game...

It's not that we had a chance, many wanted the new HC hiring to be a "WOW", not a "meh"... This. A hire that had people talking about the bold move or move towards getting NU back. Not a quick check of Wikipedia, not hearing how nice he is etc.... When Callahan was hired, I was livid, because I knew, after seeing what he'd done to my Raiders, he'd hurt the program. Bo was hired, almost everyone was excited because he'd been here before, and he wasn't Clownahan. Now they hire Riley, who most of us, when he was hired almost immediately said, "who?"... This almost seems like a hire that was based on the fact that they didn't know who else they could get, so they got Riley. And if this guy falls flat on his ass, which I hope he doesn't, everyone can say "at least he was nicer than Bo"... That's what I wonder. How did Reilly even get on the radar. Was it another, sh!t, we fired a guy and my short list all said no? ADSE had him on a list from 2005 when he was at South Carolina and they were looking for a coach. Where do people get this crap that "everyone turned us down so we ended up with Riley"? He was SE's #1 target. You have every right to feel apathetic. Hell, this program has turned many apathetic over the past 15 years. I just don't understand the whole "wow" hire thing. I want the "right" hire, not the "wow" hire. Is Riley that guy? I don't know, but time will tell.

What would qualify as a "wow" hire? Patterson? Mullen? Richt? Frost? Bielema? Narduzzi? Did Florida get a "wow" hire in McElwain? What about USC with Sark last year?

Do people actually think that NU had a chance to get Harbaugh? And if the 9ers win a couple more games this year (they lost to the Bears and Raiders!) they are in the playoffs and Harbaugh isn't in Ann Arbor.

Was this a "serious" inquiry or sarcastic? Just asking…. According to a majority of HB, Nebraska is still a 'Top Notch' job. This has been up for discussion for years. Only the people 'inside" the State or strong ties or love for the program are convinced that Nebraska is an upper echelon destination. The rest of the country , including almost every national media outlet, says Nebraska has dropped and was a distant 3rd when they compared Florida, Michigan, and Nebraska as coaching destinations. So, if you are being serious ( you think that there is a long list ), then you must agree that MR is passing some great guys up……. if you are being sarcastic, then you obviously are admitting that this ISN'T your old Nebraska anymore. Not trying to start a riff, just honestly trying to get your stance… or opinion. It was a sarcastic reply to some posters (not saying its you) after every hire (except Bray) moaning about that coach being a buddy hire, not having a good history, not being Frost/Orgeron/etc. I just want to know what would make these people happy and who do they think they Riley should have hired. If you are going to bitch about it, then give a realistic solution. As far as Nebraska in the grand scheme of CFB, I would put it in the 10-20 range as far as a destination. Yes, there was a time when it would have been probably top 7ish, but not now. The landscape has changed too much over the past 20 years (scholarship limits including more local kids going to lower divisions, facility arms race, S&C being fairly level, speeding up of the recruiting calendar, etc). Why would a position coach from Georgia want to make a lateral move the Nebraska? He is coaching in the best conference in the country and has much more talent closely available for recruiting. As far as my stance, I am happy with Riley and who he has brought in both coaching and support staff wise. Now he has to prove on the field over the next few years that he can get Nebraska back to where we all want it to be.

I would like to see some people submit a list of "proven and impressive" assistant coaches that Riley could have hired that would be willing to come to Nebraska.

I have mixed feelings about Kenny. KB was a great player as far as Nebraska WRs go. He holds the catches and yards records and never met a block that he didn't like. With that said, he was very polarizing off the field, doing/saying many things that rubbed people (including me) the wrong way. I thank him for his play over the last 5 years and wish him nothing but luck in the future.

New (to me at least) rumor is that Stanton got put in the Phil Dillard Memorial Doghouse after taking it upon himself to call a pass play (or at least check into a pass from a run/pass option) on the last play of the FAU game. Supposedly after this his reps in practice declined significantly to being close to 0. Can anyone confirm or deny? You can see in the video that Bo doesn't look happy and looks at (presumably) Stanton, throws his hands in the air, and says something while going out to shake hands.

Bray should be light years ahead of Els in the coaching department. I'm hoping he can get the LBs playing fast and flying to the ball. I would love to see Bando/Rose/Newby as the starters next year.
