  1. Smoked a couple butts and tried the Amazing Ribs recipe this weekend. Really good stuff. I think I like it a bit better than the recipe I posted. Its a little sweeter and has a more complex flavor profile. Whereas the recipe I posted is more of a straight mustard and vinegar flavor that has a stronger pungent vinegar bite. Both very good but slightly different. I would definitely recommend either one as a staple to serve with your barbeque.
  2. I don't really care how they tackle as long as they get the job done. If the surest and most effective way leads to a couple targeting and ejection calls per game, so be it. Sure they can teach them to try to avoid it but the last thing I want to see is guys overly concerned about how to avoid the penalty. I don't want to see them headhunting or spearing or anything like that but judging off the 2 calls yesterday, I think we're just going to have to accept it as part of the game now. My personal opinion is the game is moving so fast and the players are so athletuc nowadays that all they can really be concerned about is getting the guy on the ground. The ones where they can pull up or alter their trajectory will be fairly obvious to the players. However, the other ones.....well, just tackle the sumbitch and hope it goes our way.

  4. I guess we were watching different games. What I saw was a 43-10 win and a few significant improvements that likely, if they had occurred last season, would've changed the outcome of all but 1 or 2 of our losses. Don't worry, I also saw the things that need work and I am not satisfied with where we are yet. But I do think offensive play calling, a willingness to establish the run, zero turnovers, Tommy not being made to be a pocket passer, a very capable stable of RB's, and O line improvement, to mention the big ones, are worthy of some praise and acknowledgement. Anybody who can't celebrate those things, at least a little bit, is going to struggle ever being satisfied. Good luck with your enjoyment of the rest of the season.
  5. A whole bunch of people and teams showed what is right and good about cfb today. Props to Fresno St, their coach, Gaglianone, Riley and staff and team and so many others for showing us all that there are more important things than the game itself. I'm sure Sam felt the love and appreciates it. Proud to be a Husker fan today.
  6. Yes, they finally showed that they are willing to do what works even if it isn't what their natural tendencies are. I don't think we have to worry a lick about them not throwing the ball more if that's what's needed. My fear will always be that they will abandon the run too soon but maybe they really are learning.
  7. That's the one constant in Husker football. Even if I don't agree with everything said it makes me optimistic that people are always wanting/demanding the best. I don't disagree. I also saw plenty of areas where we need to improve. But, I think if a person wants to avoid being perceived as overly negative, they also should acknowledge the things that improved and were done right. IMO there were plenty of both tonight but it's really nice to see so many good things for a change. I guess I forgot where I was for a moment there, hoping that some others would also acknowledge some of those good things.
  8. Good synopsis Mav, I like it. And NO, I wasn't hoping FSU would score 9 more towards the end of the game. What kind of monster do you guys take me for?
  9. 3 and 0. Pay the man, lol. We should keep track like every game is a $110/$100 bet, 3 "locks" per week. I'm +$300 and teach is -$120. Anybody else want in?
  10. I guess another thing to be learned is that some fans, when presented with numerous areas of vast improvement, will still bitch and moan after only one game. Not sure what it would take to get them to acknowledge the obvious areas of improvement instead of just focusing on the things that also obviously need more work. Enjoy the win and that at least some things improved ffs.
  11. Disagree on the bold. A real QB will shred this team, which was a problem last year, although the staff finally seemed to settle on how they want to run the ball which should help this team. I'm going to get flamed for this, but the targeting rule was the right call. Gifford hit the QB with his helmet, it doesn't matter if it was not intentional or if it wasn't severe. It's targeting and was enforced according to the rule. Great to see a 0 turnover game. Well I disagree with your disagreement. No where did I say our pass defense doesn't have room for improvement. And the biggest improvements I did see had to do with offensive play calling, establishing the run and pounding the rock. That is what made it pssible for a couple of those passes, especially the long one for a touchdown. And that in turn causes the D to hesitate slightly on run support. It's a win win situation that we did not employ last year. Also, I never said either of those were not targeting penalties. However, I don't believe either of them should be, and if I had to choose, I would've said the 2nd one was and the first wasn't. But then again I liked when football was a actually a contact sport. But I'm done getting upset over it, thus my comment that we'll just have to accept that it's probably going to happen virtually every game. Neither of our guys did it with intent and somebody would have to explain to me how either of those guys do their job without potentially getting called for it. I think the review should look for intent but that's jmo.
  12. We're miles ahead of where we ended lasted year but still have some work to do. Might as well just accept that guys are going to get penalized and ejected for playing the game correctly. Finally got some 2nd and 3rd team players game experience, the way we want to. Ozigbo runs hard and we've got Tre Bryant for a long time, and that looks to be a very good thing.
  13. Nice drive. Lean on the run until/if they stop it. Ozigbo runs hard, doesn't go down easy. Me likey.
  14. The more I think about, picking the opposite of me all year should help you make about 600 dollars. Hey teach- Cover, cover and gonna cover. Sorry, had to bump & brag.
  15. Pretty sure Ed Cunningham has had 19 close family and friends killed by targeting.

I think it was Michigan-Hawaii, not sure because I had to switch channels quick when "That's Targeting Ed" started on his usual tirade.

  16. Good article by Dirk. I think he pretty much hits the nail on the head. But it's not only the 25 and under crowd I'm worried about, even if they are the most important to get re-engaged to the football program. Hell I'm 53 and just started paying attention in the early 70's when we had our first 2 titles. I lived through the can't beat Oklahoma, can't beat the Florida teams, can't win the big one disappointments. I attended UNL during the scoring explosion years. And I, someone who experienced all of the greatness of this program, am beginning to get disinterested. Imagine how hard it is for a 30 year old who has never experienced the dominance we used to show on the field. 2 or 3 losses in a season is about the worst this program ever knew from 1970 until 2001. During that time though we were always in the picture, one big game away from something special, or at the pinnacle or waiting to get over the hump. We were relevant. And then the debacle in Boulder. That was absolutely the turning point for this program. I know it was for me because I was at that game and I've never been the same since. Our mojo evaporated like spit on a hot tin roof and it has not returned in 15 years. The hope is still there but it fades a little further with every season of irrelevance that passes. Dirk couldn't be more right, this program needs a signature season, hell a signature win, more than it ever has in the last 50 years. I fear that it is getting dreadfully close to not being able to be resurrected. There is a reason Minnesota (as an example) is Minnesota. They lost a generation or more of fans. We're getting scarily close.

  18. I only do that on rare occasions when I feel a genuine supernatural insight into what's about to happen. I was pretty good at it in 2010 - I called Helu's 2nd and 3rd touchdowns right before they happened, and 2 of Kyler's long PA post touchdown catches. I had a premonition that BYU would convert the Hail Mary. As we sat there during the final timeout, I could "hear" their fans cheering in the visitor's sections. It was pretty creepy. So THAT was knapp's fault? Premonition, telekinesis, what's the difference? ;P
  19. I think Mav is right. After 2nd time the offensive team would likely be warned to snap the ball or be faced with forfeiting the game. I've seen DOG declined before and it seems the team always snapped it the next time. What is curious though are all the times a team does it to give their kicker more room and it often gets accepted. Pretty sure this won't be a thing this Saturday...
  20. What a chart. I can see how the political process makes it easy for "tough on crime" to win. With as much that will always be at DA's discretion, that builds up and results in these sobering statistics. Feel-good campaign platitudes =/= sound outcomes. Is there a per capita chart? 'Cause this chart is pretty meaningless. Yeah, it would be more meaningful if it was per 100,000 or something like that. Still it has increased rather significantly per capita. 1980 pop was 226M so about .15% of the population. Now it is about .47% so a threefold increase. Actually that percentage doesn't seem too unreasonable. That's about one person for every 200. Putting it in perspective, that would be about 2 people from my high school graduating class, I can see that. Seems like probably at least 1 in 200 across society are slimebags.....and yet many of them aren't in prison.
  21. I don't know why but even the thought of this is making me tear up. Can't imagine the emotions his coaches and teammates will be experiencing.
