  1. I’d not be surprised to see a prosecutor charge assault. It’s clearly deliberate imo. More than once. FB is a rough and tumble game but imo deliberate attempts to injure are out of bounds. Period. Maybe it’s payback but unless it was immediate, it looks quite vicious and intentional harm only.
  2. I repeat myself but it is not overall class rankings - it’s balance across the team. We have skill players that could start at half the Big Ten schools. We have lines that are not and these are the most important to a winning team. Half the team is competitive- half is not. Give me 15 starters from around the conference at O line, D line, LB, DE, and maybe a S or CB, and we win the West. But these spots don’t magically get good in one offseason. Development is a multi-year process that starts with some level of talent. A decent HC knows this. Heck, most of the current staff are decent coaches - good enough to get to a bowl game more often than not. Maybe Frost knew this but he totally failed to recruit balanced talent, instead focusing heavily on RBs, WRs and DBs. He seemed to believe you win with passing offense and just fill in everywhere else. Imo. Might get away with it in the ACC or even PAC 12. Not Big Ten and not SEC. Imo.
  3. We won’t be bowling next year, no matter who is hired. Three years if things go well. This is a 3 years to a bowl, 5 years to a respectable bowl. We are at the bottom looking up. This team lacks too many players in specific positions. O lines take years to build. Probably none of our starters would start at any other Big Ten school at this point.
  4. Is there any dead period left before Dec sign date? Or just the portal that’s quiet until Dec 5?
  5. Trev is and has been searching for quite some time now. Probably long before the firing date of Frost. Any AD has to be aware that all coaches come and go. It’s the nature of coaching in modern athletics, especially the major sports. Coaches likewise keep their eyes open and presumably have career and many other factors in mind. Lots of things change for everybody and every place. All the speculation and guessing is interesting and maybe useful I guess. But hopefully the negatives and the positives are all taken for what they are - not much. Every coach needs to be given fair and respectful discussion. These are fellow citizens and have families and lives. Most have current jobs and people who depend on them for important reasons. Whomever it is that is hired to replace Frost and each of the many others at DONU deserves a reasonable opportunity to do the job. It is a big challenge no doubt. Let’s all give these people a chance to show what they can do. We all may have our own individual ideas and preferences but there’s really no way to tell who may be the right one to turn the football program around. There is more than one approach that can succeed and or fail. Nobody knows for certain which that may be.
  6. Well, words are cheap. Frost said much the same but didn’t really mean it. Those sound good to many fans who understand the game and recognize the battle begins and usually ends up front.
  7. Need a couple more TDs to get this game and keep playing tough D. Lotta game left. Get a stop and find a good first TD drive. That’ll put the pressure on MN to throw more. They cant keep burning up clock down 17.
  8. Why don’t we hire away all the good coaches in the SEC and BIGTen to analyst spots so we get rid of the competition. Three hundred million would buy us a championship pretty much. Get the best players from each team we may need to build a three deep of each class. Then the HC candidates can have a HC challenge (written tests, interviews and physical skills competition). TV rights would cover a bunch of the costs too! Just a wild idea that might work! Lol
  9. I just suspect that the devil is in the details and that’s where the real work is imo. Searching thru thousands and thousands of players for ones that really fit the mold. I’ve never been all that impressed with the ‘gurus’ that rate the prospects. We know they hardly look at the guys from the unheralded schools or ones that don’t go to camps etc. Recruiting has to involve long days and nights, travel constantly and lots of nights sleeping in cars etc., driving 350!miles to a game in SW Kansas, then back to KC and on over to eastern Iowa, Souix Falls. Etc. You don’t just Google search. Up close. Face to face. Deep dives. You beat the bushes. Shake the trees. No stone unturned. To me, this just doesn’t sound like Frost’s style. Frost didn’t seem to go beyond his prior contacts in the deep SE very often. There is talent in FL, GA, AL but you’re battling everybody. Texas has a bunch but the numbers suggest we stopped looking. Seems like the plan was just try to hire somebody already near a prized recruit or already closely tied. Being an elite program means working 12 months a year, 12 - 15 hrs a day. Recreation is what you do after you’re a successful pro. Frost got paid for work he was supposed to do rather than work he’d done. He’s too young for that kind of prospective pay plan.
  10. Without CT it seems unlikely the offense will do much. Gonna find out just how much ‘push’ this O line has with 80% run plays! Lol. I can imagine the howling if we actually win this game as a run the ball team! That would be hilarious !
  11. WRs and secondary not bad frankly. Both need help from the lines and the rest of the team generally. Without a reliable run game and pass protection, moving the ball is very much hit and miss. Without a good pass rush and steady run defense coupled with a ball control offense, teams methodically move the ball down the field. Generally speaking, NU has lacked the big bodies to match up physically. It’s been imbalanced recruiting imo. Class rankings don’t seem to focus on position balance and or weighting. And QB recruiting has still not produced quality depth. It’s been about 15 years with one QB mostly. Lots of athletes but not enough focus on the individual position skills. Some of it is or may be development but more careful selection is needed. I suspect our searching and scouting is failing. Maybe too much reliance of rating services and following the crowd? It’s been a sort of shotgun approach in some positions, perhaps just taking a bunch and hoping a few pan out. Systematic focus might be lacking.
  12. If CT can’t go, then it’s time to run some option and change things up. Play both Purdy and Logan and mix it up. We can slow the goofers down and keep the game close. Best chance. Take some chances - go for it. Have some fun and think way outside the box. Even if Casey can go, I’d still change things up and add a couple new run schemes. Minn won’t be as ready. They already have to be wondering what to think but the Purdy pass game in lieu of CT doesn’t look like enough. I have felt Purdy has potential but apparently he’s either not ready or hasn’t had enough work with the WRs etc. Chubba does have some ability but it seems unlikely he’s nearly prepared to be the one. Imo.
  13. Define get things moving in the right direction. That seems to be the issue the divides the fans and former players and media. The eye test? The wins vs losses test? What is the pass or fail measure? Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5
  14. Hunt or be hunted. We’ve been prey not predators. Mickey has this exactly right. Hit or be hit. Be the aggressor. Tough. Physical and fierce. Do unto others before they do unto us. Some may think this is just too simple but it’s just football in its most elemental. it’s been way too long since Husker Power really was just that. We are seeing glimpses lately but it’s too little too seldom. This would be a key characteristic of the next HC I would select. Mickey exhibits a tendency toward this.
  15. I do see more younger guys playing which is critical. Wins are nice but future winning is the objective. Experience. Development and evaluation. There may need to be coaching changes / upgrades but imo the issue is talent (recruiting and development) in certain position groups. We have seen the genuine improvement to the STs ( far from great but better). Just changing DC from Chin to Busch made a significant difference in the defensive play ( again far from great but better). I’d expect some additional improvement as the the last 4 games happen but the goals of the team are fading away so who knows. Even so, the most substantial need of the program is a in-depth look at the recruiting search and find people and systems. We are missing on way too many. The roster is huge (maybe too big in fact) so maybe with limits on time and facilities and staff, reducing by 10% would give more time and reps and coaching instruction. position by position, a three year plan needs to build a strata of depth to accumulate a three or 4 deep chart. Positions of greatest need (O line, D line, TE, QB (obviously we are far short of what we thot).
  16. Whip calling a great game. Get CT to play better we are rolling! Need a pick 6 on this drive or fumble scoop. Get a lead going into half.
  17. A great HC can become a legend with the restoration of Nebraska. The opportunity is unique really. The money is as good as it gets. It’s the only show in town. It’s still Nebraska. And with the past 6 years, nobody will have stupid (unrealistic) expectations that matter. Dam few will seriously believe the only problem was Frost and it’s going to be simple to start winning Big Ten championships. So the next coach will get time to turn things around. The program is bottomed out. It can be restored but it’s 5 years to a a top three big 10 status. Next year could be worse before it gets better on the line of scrimmage. There are decent players in some positions but not many. The portal helped temporarily at QB and RB and WR. But those haven’t been the problem frankly. It’s everywhere else that recruiting was almost nonexistent. Maybe they can portal the LOS quicker but I’d think that’s a three year project at a minimum. But a great coach can certainly look at Neb fb as an opportunity to become one of the elites. Few other places offer this. Imo.
  18. Leading ‘the pack’? What pack? If all Trev was looking for is somebody to coach the team and grab a couple wins vs Rutgers and Indiana, he could have done that himself. Mickey has exceeded many expectations and certainly can coach at a level well above Frost. But Frost got out coached every week by just about everyone. From the outside looking in, Frost gave the impression for a time that he was really taking the job seriously. Of course appearances can be misleading. Hype and spin and zero transparency (secrecy abounded), so fans were kept unaware for so long. Eventually it became inescapably clear Frost was a great pretender. Lazy. Inattentive. Apparently he liked doing everything but being a great fb coach at Nebraska. Contrast that with MJ - who appears to be very focused, dedicated and serious about the team. But so does Busch and most of the staff as well. I wish we would get more assistants for interviews etc. fans get restless and anxious etc without feedback. It’s better under MJ as he and Busch especially really say things vs bland generic coach speak. I do think all the coaches could do a better job of answering questions as teaching moments. They’re all making top 1% money for a seasonal job. They have lots of assistants and staff and assistants’ assistants. Meet and greet and meet the press and reporting as often as the shareholders demand IS the job. Mickey has done some good things but he can’t ‘earn’ the job under these circumstances. Nobody could. The job is building a new football program from scratch basically. It’s not a remodel. It’s a total build from the ground up. Looking back it seems clear that Frost starting out 0-6 was like all the bells and whistles and sirens going off at once. Self destruct. But while the program disintegrated before all eyes, most refused to believe what they were seeing. Something was seriously wrong inside. Not just the Jimmies and Joes. Not just the Xs and Os. It’s also the AD and Coach. Leadership. Work ethic. Dedication. Focus. Drive. Determination. Respect. Humility. Delegation with oversight. Principles. Confidence and self assurance through success earned through hard work over time. Maturity. Honesty. Being genuine and worthy of respect. Sharing and caring. Those and more are traits needed by great leaders. A great HC is a great leader of men. I know they’re young men, not boys. They should try to stop referring to them as kids. Treat them as such. They will respond and act likewise. After Frost’s firing, it has been remarkable to me that the team (almost to the very last guy) has hardly reacted. It was obviously expected and even though it came just three weeks into a new season, not a surprise. In fact, more of a relief. The team needed a new commander to take charge in the coming battles. Perhaps the team was really not Frost’s team - he’d lost them long before if he ever had them. It explains so many departures. Mickey knows (we all do if being honest and realistic), this is a long term war. No quick fixes. No magic bullets. A long term vision. A long term plan. Step by step methodical and steady. The next head coach has to be a true grinder (works 18 hr days for most of the year, every year). Lives the job. Works to live not just works to live. By Thanksgiving, it will be interesting to see how the job suits Mickey and vice versa. He’s never had to bear that heavy burden. It wears on everyone. It’s tough. It’s hard as hell to do. Damned few have the right stuff. You got to be a teacher, a boss, a general, a publicity manager, a guidance counselor etc. A PHD in life is a good background. Mickey may have just the right mix. We don’t know. Hopefully Trev has the ability to tell. He’s there. He’s getting to know MJ personally and watch him everyday. He’s seeing how players respond in games and in practice and in life. It’s little things that give the rest of the story. Trev is searching for men with the right stuff. He has an army to build not just replace one general.
