  1. Say those numbers are accurate, that suggests to me he’s reached the point where another 20 lbs is all that’s needed. He’s a big man. Period. 6-8 325 is not overweight and might be a tad ‘thin’ for his size. For someone that’s 70 lbs over weight, the hard part is the first 50. By then, he already feels much better and he gets the personal satisfaction of actually seeing the big changes. Now, the visible results are there and become the incentive to do even more. I am guessing same as everyone else but it won’t surprise me if this guy IS a factor in the fall. He’s maturing from being a teenager into a man (18 into 20 essentially). Just my hunch.
  2. UF facility was not impressive imo. Much smaller and didn’t look like much when I took the virtual tour at its opening.
  3. There have always been some walkons that were essentially roster filler in some respects but as recruiting declined dramatically during the first 4 years of Solich, the quality of walkons (talent / capability) declined as well. There were walkons by 2002 that were below the Div 2 level, mostly just to give the team numbers. The first and seconds were becoming third stringers. From that, the quality of backups and scout team declined and practice reps tended to give a false look in game preps and competition across the roster generally. Callahan promptly reduced the walk on numbers for the simple idea that many were just not D-1 capable and would take up valuable practice and coaching time etc. Reviving recruiting generally helped but it has never been nearly as vigorously and methodically run since. It appears Rhule has a detailed, systematic and energetic effort to find and pursue more quality players. Today, after NU has fallen from the top ten to the middle (or less ?) of Div 1. This handicaps ANY recruiting seriously. Thus, the time table to restore Neb fb to the upper tier will be more gradual and time delayed than some Husker fans understand. The support for Urban Meyer or a few other splash type HC hires was largely a response to the desire to find immediate, transformative recruiting. Rhule has a little splash but mostly is just reorganizing and energizing the process and he literally hired the staff with a big emphasis on reopening the recruiting doors with NIL $ as a way to ‘buy’ much better players than could have been otherwise even be considered. Rhule is trying to do the rebuild of Neb football as a program by out working and hustling with NIL $ as the Ace trump card to close deals. Imo. It’s better but it’s a multi year time frame. I like this first batch and short term help is coming this fall but no miraculous change should be expected. Better coaching and schemes coupled with some returning experience and a less daunting (not easy) schedule can help too. Still, 2023 will be a very difficult road. Going bowling is probable but should also be greatly appreciated if it happens. Imo.
  4. I’m not much for the rankings bc of a number of things, but this is, imo, the best group of recruiting additions (‘23 and portal) in a long time. There could a couple / three more yet. We still need a NT transfer and another OL or even two. Those would fill in the team quite nicely imo. Not complete but much better. Too many WRs but I realize some will not play that position and some may not stay. I’d like to have had a top 5 nationally RB but we have some in the roster that are pretty decent. Still feel better if Hornsby (as a QB) could have come. But all things considered, the team added a broad array of talented athletes that have fb potential. Can they get better in three months of practicing? Yes, but the game reps will not come until mid season. Team will be green, raw and young but there are some guys returning to help teach etc. if CT gets healthy, we have a QB to start the season. Got to do some creative O line things but scheme and gimmicks won’t fool many P5 coaching staffs. The weak links will remain thru 10-15-23 certainly. Be a rough first season but if the team can remain confident, this will be a good bunch by late Nov.
  5. Very fast. Nice size. Take him. Hope those Tex connections pay off.
  6. Fred needs to stay - he’s about the best HC Neb will ever hire.
  7. Scholarships will be converted to NIL $. Not complicated imo.
  8. How many members are there? $100 per member initial donation plus $.10 per post per year would be a good place to start. Then we take polls to decide which players get money!
  9. They are both ify imo. But if there is room, I’d keep them thru spring to give them a chance.
  10. Yes, portal helped NU mostly because we had recruited and retained and developed so poorly for years. Many recruits were rated better than the played, if they even saw the field. But, frankly, we should have had players as good or better than 80% of the transfer ins we got already. I really suspect our recruiting research and evaluations were very amateur and lacked depth and so on. It seems like we were just following the stars/ratings in place of our own searches. They have dozens of people in addition to the coaches themselves to help in campus but the coaches should be watching film and going to games and traveling constantly. These guys are paid huge money, well beyond their non-football market values, in some cases, to work 70 hrs a week year around. When they slack off, they get swept away by the competition. Rhule &Co seem to have the right ideas. I am guessing they’ve done more recruiting activities in 45 days than prior bunch did in a year. Will it pay off ? Who knows - only time will tell. But the effort and planning is clearly well thought out. Rhule is building a recruiting ‘grapevine’ aka pipeline into schools in multiple player rich areas. This is, imo, how you really find the recruiting gems and even when the recruiting services’ report a player, HC and his trusted aides must find their own data and recruit the person/family as much as his fb highlights. I’d be more interested in the “lowlights” as the highs. And the grades, academics, character, motivations, contacts etc.
  11. Hate to be repetitive but class rankings don’t account for balance and or need by position. Overloading on certain positions while ignoring or failing others can still give you a high ranking, as far as I can tell. But the result is a team like ours with lots of good skill players and not many line players. Result is a poor performing team.
  12. If he doesn’t know by now, let it be. Move on. His heart and mind are not in it obviously. His scholarship is better given to somebody who truly cares. Imo.
  13. TCU doesn’t get to the final game if there were 12 teams to start with. One game upset is all it took.
  14. I thot we did this already. It’s been very good so far. Really early yet but we’ve made a real upgrade. Patience is required. After season 2 we can tell more but even then we will know much more by 1-1-25.
  15. If Rhule finds one more OT in the portal plus the Stanford guy this weekend, it may not fix the line fully but the difference could be dramatic. Find one stud All Conference caliber nose tackle and the defense could be top notch, and young too! Get one stud TE and Hornsby and this weekend’s VA receiver - the offense has dramatic difference making potential. All the speed and athletes to add to special teams and depth will be a big step up too! Im starting to get hopeful!
  16. I believe Will Shields, probably the GOAT lineman in history, never ever had a penalty of any kind called on him. He learned and mastered the Milt Tenopir method. He produced great lines with all sorts of guys without any particular measurements etc.
  17. Was he all conference? Can he play? We have guys with Lots of experience but are not playing well. Just asking bc comments indicate he a great player.
  18. They need size to block too! If he’s a great corner, put him there. WRs are easier to find imo.
  19. He knows recruiting in Texas and La. A good addition for contacts and player eval. Recruiting is the big first step for NU imo. On the field won’t get much better until the team gets more athletic.
  20. There is much to be done. More than since the early 1960s. Can it be done? Yes. Quickly? No. Winning 6 games ? Yes, but that is not the same as turning the program around (the true goal imo). A season may be played one game at a time and that should the team’s immediate focus. But the HC needs to also keep the bigger goal of the program focused on sustaining excellence. Forest vs the trees in a way. Most of the recruiting emphasis has been aimed at the weakest areas of the current roster which can provide some short term benefit but still is laying the foundation for the future. Most of the transfer portal guys are backup level players in many ways. A few can make a big difference but suddenly becoming a title contender will have as much to do with opponents’ regression as NU progression, imo.
  21. I don’t get the hate for Matt D. He was responsible for lots of good things but he didn’t coach nor recruit - he helped secure what few good players Frost chose to recruit. Atleast that’s my view from the outside.
