  1. By that logic they should always be practicing wearing ankle weights and hands dipped in ice water. Make it that much easier in the September games when you can move freely and its 70 degrees.
  2. Run plays sure - I dunno, I'll have to rewatch them but BTN keeps taking down the 40 minute versions. My impression has been he sometimes flees the pocket instead of stepping up and standing in. I have no problem with that since it gives a run threat instead of potentially getting trapped, but feels like more of a choice than the defense forcing it. Definitely could be wrong though.
  3. Yeah, good points. And technically if we win the West we have 8 games remaining, so there's still time. I will say I think the line problems are much more the snaps and penalties than pass protection, outside of OSU and the second half against Colorado. Martinez hasn't been constantly running for his life outside of those games.
  4. It is interesting, and I think lineman and defensive guys playing special teams are the way to go if they're going to redshirt. I still think skill guys (if you really think they can help) should get the ball in their hands during the games they play. But defensive guys you have to be sure they know the whole defense otherwise they'll get picked on, and like you said lineman need a year if at all possible. I get the coaches have a plan, I think even they would admit things haven't gone according to that plan for Rahmir at least. And I'll stop ranting after this one, but receiver really gets me. Walters admitted none of our regulars can be a consistent deep threat other than Woodyard - holding my breath he shows up, I believe he's been injured. Then points to Houston and Nance as guys who "will be" deep threats. Ok, so if we're smart we have 8 games of having a legitimate deep threat at receiver. I don't really care if teams know they're just trying to take the top off the defense when they're in the game, even that can open up intermediate passes. I don't need them to know the whole offense, I need them to play 15-20 offensive snaps in 4 games each to at least threaten the defense with a deep ball.
  5. Fair enough, yeah when we're beating them 48-3 we won't need to celebrate. I think there were people actually complaining that we were celebrating which I have an issue with, but I've got no problem looking forward to the days when it'll be a non-event.
  6. Colorado was #2 in the country, Kansas was unranked and we beat them 45-17. Of course you're going to celebrate differently. And neither of those really apply to last week - this wasn't a rush the field/tear down the goal posts celebration, it's a celebration but not over the top like we beat Alabama. And it was a last second victory, which you're going to celebrate regardless of who it's against. Much more like '97 Missouri, a team we should have handled fairly easily and had to squeak by. EDIT: Your initial post mentioned Kansas, Iowa State was also unranked and not a particularly close (28-12) game.
  7. Amen! There were several bad calls in that game, against both teams. All of those influenced the game in some way. The PI at the end we know would've had a big influence, but fix the other calls and the game is in an entirely different place. I'm all for ways to help refs get it right on the field, not more replay in specific scenarios to arbitrarily clean up some missed calls and not others.
  8. I think if you're going to play them you might as well have a package of plays they are comfortable with to run. NW was one of the games picked for Rahmir, so I assume the coaches thought he could help but he didn't get s chance to. We can substitute from play to play, and if they haven't been on the field I don't think that would show a tendency. Or use the first drive of each half, assuming those are scripted. Hickman I get just doing special teams, but skill guys and qbs I'd like to see touch the ball if they're using a game.
  9. I think my main complaint about the staff this year is the handling of redshirts. They talk about it a lot, but Rahmir has used 2 games for something like 10 plays. McCaffrey used one for one play, although like you mentioned I think the one play scenario caught them off guard and they'd told McCaffrey he was the guy if Vedral went down. And Chase/Nance aren't ready for any game action? I know they want them to be fully prepared, but they're is nothing wrong with giving them a subset of the game plan to focus on. If it's only a couple games, the specific plays they're used for won't be enough for other teams to key on.
  10. Looking for another source, but this says hand timed. And maybe he is that fast and was just tired, we have been working him a ton. https://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-football-high/wandale-robinson-posts-362831.html
  11. I mean it came across more as an embarrassed joke than an admission. He was throttling down to make a move when he was caught. That being said the DB was catching up before that, so I agree he might be quicker than fast . And show me a high schooler who runs a 4.2 and I'll show you a coach with a real fast finger on the stop watch.
  12. Yeah, so make it 2 massive games until the narrative changes I guess. I'm not claiming all of the things people are complaining about didn't happen, I just haven't seen them the past few weeks.
  13. I'm not claiming Martinez is playing exactly the same as last year, but I think some of the critiques this year are just persisting from the first few games. Since Frost yelled at him, I've only seen one instance of him not running when he should have or running tentatively. That play he also missed an open Spielman, but only after the play broke down so that's forgivable - hard to find receivers ad libbing sometimes. And frankly I haven't seen many concrete examples of him missing open receivers since the first games. Just anecdotal "guys are open, I can see them from the stands!" Unfortunately until he has a massive game, I think the indecisive/missing open guys narrative will persist.
  14. I thought it was more general, like who goes in if Vedral is hurt. In which case McCaffrey makes sense - but I bet if they'd thought of the one play helmet possibility it would've been Bunch.
  15. Well in that case sure, I think they traditionally both played in home unis until the ncaa legislated it. But I dunno, if the visiting team wants to do it and the home team is indifferent I could see coaches just ignoring it.
  16. I'm sure it will never happen because it requires a waiver, but it would be fun to see Wisconsin wear their home unis as well - black vs red. I think the NCAA denied the waiver for UCLA/USC one year, and it just causes the visiting team to forfeit a timeout. Which is not great, so another reason it wouldn't happen. The UCLA coach wasted one of his to keep it even, which is pretty bizarre.
  17. I don't know that we need to hold anything against kids for visiting an odd school. Trent Bray is one of the few coaches from the Riley era that people say good things about, he's back at Oregon State.
  18. 3 home games left: Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Indiana and Wisconsin are also Adidas schools and Iowa is not, but I believe they've both used their alternates and don't have plans for more so I don't think it means much. Not a Wisconsin 2012 situation where Adidas wants to show off both uniforms. I really hope it's Indiana. Wisconsin and Iowa both have the potential to run all over us, and I'd hate to see that with blackshirt alternates. Maybe they could be an extra motivation to shut Wisky/Iowa down for once, but it would worry me. Also not sure about black alternates vs Iowa where black is one of their primary colors, but they're the visitors and have yellow pants so probably wouldn't matter.
  19. Feels like we let Blough from Purdue run around on us some, and if we could've stopped the stupid QB lead draw against Iowa last year we probably would've pulled that game out. And Thorson from NW is the one that gets me, he ran for like 90 one game. EDIT: I see Iowa's qb was only credited with 1 run for 10 yards, could've sworn they converted a couple thisr downs with that.
  20. And we have a history of allowing QBs no one would describe as dynamic huff and puff for decent gains. I get it, I significantly overstated his running ability - White Lightning made me laugh. I just think of a statue as somebody who they wouldn't even call a zone read for.
  21. Not sure why we didn't see more of him honestly. We weren't running the ball particularly well, but he had a couple decent runs. Only thing I could think of is the coaches wanted Mo in for the second half since he hadn't played in the first.
  22. 70% of which came against us. I guess I just have a different definition of "statue" - I'm thinking Dwayne Haskins, where we gave him 20 yards of open field and he ran for 1 and then almost broke his leg sliding down. He's not a dual threat, but he's not Peyton Manning.
  23. Sacks are 2/3rds of his rushing attempts this year. So clearly he is running less this year, but that's not the same as being slow. Probably more a side effect of not having a healthy backup, but he had 4 for 35 and a TD in one half against us last year. I'm not claiming he's Justin Fields, but he ran effectively in the 3rd quarter last year - there were also some read option gives that opened up because he was getting 8-9 a pop. If we treat him like a statue he's more than capable of going all Clayton Thorson and getting 80% of his season rushing total on us.
  24. It's the same qb who gave us a lot of trouble with option runs last year when he came in.. Not a statue. I expect us to be better prepared this year, last year we'd clearly focused on the statue who started that game.
