  1. How is DoNU making money off of the kids? My understanding was that the NU AD was a non-profit that used zero taxpayer money. That would mean the AD, save for rainy day funds and development, can't sock money away or make a profit--they have to put that money back into the other athletic programs (which they do).
  2. But where would they be if they weren't playing for a university? Most of these types of kids would not attend and/or complete college without the scholarship. Would they be in a warm dorm room every night? Nope. In classroom/practices/school events during the day? Nope. Fed 3 times a day in the athletic cafeteria? Nope. Recieve top of the line medical care for 4-5 years? Nope. Most would still be on the streets, or working for min-wage. It sucks the lives that some of these kids are plucked out of...but it's important to remember the oportunity they are receiving. An education, structure, etc. They can afford a toothbrush, snacks, clothes. They don't need $150 a month cell bill, or HD cable. Some of this problem is a product of our society today, and the how peoples' "needs" have changed so dramatically. You can't tell me Pryor had to sell his stuff to pay mom's bills. Look at the designer jeans the kid is wearing, the 25 pairs of shoes in his closet, his watch, etc. I'd bet my house that Pryor has spent more time vacationing around the country in the last 4 years than I have in 10. Perhaps our student athletes need a reality-check in regards to their priorities before the validity of a payment can be determined. KCHusker_Chris--I agree that these athletes do not need to live anywhere near an opulent lifestyle while attending college. But I doubt Trev would had brought up the example from his playing days if this player didn't have clothes, but the player blew his stipend on video games and Ho-Hos. IMO, Trev brought this up as an example that, after basics, there's just not a lot left over. Clothing (nothing fancy or brand name, mind you--Old Navy, Wheelers, or K-Mart/Wal-Mart clothes will do) would be considered a necessity by most.
  3. Head coach at Texas A&M right now, and the obvious wrong decision made by a double-timing "Dollar Bill" Byrne. And while the current state of Big 10 baseball is sub-par, it won't stay that way for long--television exposure will help a great deal towards driving improvement within the conference. Additionally, I've heard scuttlebutt from friends back home that the Big 10 will review conference scholarship policies, because we're not the only school saying that the current policy hinders ability to recruit. So don't be shocked if we still offer big money for a big name (read: O'Conner, Childress) and are lauded (and prodded) by Delaney, et al for doing so. It may be an easy hill to climb, but bringing in Nebraska will ultimately improve the baseball acumen of the conference, which will ultimately pay dividends in years to come.
  4. Good thing it happened, especially if the scuttlebutt from 949597 proves correct.
  5. Perhaps Dr. Tom isn't sure what to do because no one has rated MA on this coach rating site. In all seriousness, 949597, I hope you're legit and right. I don't think I could sit through another season of this tripe. It's one thing to expect the CWS every year--it's another to expect making your own fraking conference tourney. BTW, here's Will Bolt's bio from Texarkana College.
  6. The biggest story out of last year was Nebraska AND Colorado jumping ship to different conferences. Colorado's first Pac-12 is on 10/01/2011 in Boulder vs. Washington State--that same week, we're up in Madison. The following week, Colorado is on the road at Stanford while we have our first Big 10 home game against tOSU. If anything, look for ESPN to have GameDay in Boulder on 10/01 to discuss that half of the story and play up the PAC-12 angle (especially after signing their multi-billion dollar agreement with the conference and Fox Sports over the summer). The following week, GameDay will be in Lincoln to pimp the B1G (for whom television contract talks are spinning up ahead of schedule--why do you think Delaney is making all of those requests of late?) and shine a light on the Nebraska side of the story. This is, of course, barring any sort of unforseen catastrophe or news event (e.g. SweaterVest being forced out of tOSU, Texas finally admitting they are unscrupulous cheating whores) superseding everything else planned that week.
  7. When this subject comes up, I always think back to a story Trev Alberts would tell back when he was on ESPN about a fellow starter who was getting razzed by teammates for always wearing his jersey and blue jeans, regardless of weather or day. Come to find out, save for a couple pairs of blue jeans and a few ratty t-shirts, the best and only clothes this player owned were his game jersey and his blue jeans. Makes me a sad panda to think about some of the tough backgrounds some of these recruits come from. Anything to help them out with basic necessities while attending school should be done.
  8. Just so long as all of our games are televised (so I can rub the locals' nose in it), I'll be happy. Even having an 11am game will be fine for me--it's still better than that s***** Big XII PPV s*** that the conference always stuck us with. We had--what--three games on that s*** last fall, and OU, aTm, and UT had one each last season? S***.
  9. I think the future of baseball at Nebraska will be determined by what the B1G, en masse, does about improving the quality of baseball coming out of the other 11 schools. That means scheduling better non-con teams, working with schools to allow the Big 10 Network to broadcast away non-con games during February/March, and doing away with the loony scholarship restrictions that other conferences don't have. It is possible and plausible that the Big 10 can be relevant in baseball once again. Nebraska, until MA, proved that you can win and legitimately compete for a NC in a school north of the Mason-Dixon line. Nebraska also was a sliver away from proving that baseball could be a revenue-generating sport north of parallel 36°30' North. And now, the conference has the home of the College World Series in their footprint and may even begin playing their conference tourney in Omaha.
  10. PSN actually came back up for the continental US last night (05-15-2011). It's still hit or miss, with everyone needing to download a new firmware update and reset their account settings, but the switch has been flipped back to the 'on' position. Now, let's see when/if they make with the goodies and free credit monitoring...
  11. Wow...this article completely changed how I view Bleacher Report now. Thanks for that, Walksalone. Now I'll be sure that I'm never gonna let you down.
  12. LINK Very interesting...thanks for the find Knapplc. Here's hoping that we're reading the right things about Anderson and his contract.
  13. A little weird? It's literally nonsense. Far from it, IMO. The Big 10 selected Nebraska because, amongst our weaponry, are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and an almost fanatical devotion to Dr. Tom, the Bobfather, and our significant legacy all built in a post-AP poll college football era. The Big 10 is embracing all of Nebraska, including its traditions and its leaders/legends. To include Dr. Tom as a Big 10 legend isn't odd--it's the Big 10 giving us a collective bear hug as they welcome us into their family. The only reason I could fathom that it's odd to some folks is because we're used to our (soon-to-be) old conference treating us like feces and taking us for granted. --- Oh, and I wouldn't be shocked to see that this trip becomes more than just one icon show--remember the Bobfather has some ties to Big 10 lore, including former coaching jobs at Michigan (IIRC), an upstart Nebraska beating #1 Michigan in Ann Arbor, and his coaching of the great Barry Alvarez who brought a moribund Wisconsin program out of the forest and into the limelight. And if you want to hear about the Bobfather, Barry and Dr. Tom would be at or towards the top of the list to get information from, right?
  14. If I've done this correctly, I've emboldened and colored the programs which have overtaken Nebraska in the past five years under MA's watch. I believe we were second only to Texas five years ago, but A&M and Mizzou were nipping at our heels. Now all Sam's OWH article says is that we have tread marks on our backs and we're looking at them run off into the sunset from the dirt. Disgusting.
  15. Thanks for the link, knapplc. I agree with the article that UNO's collective silence did them no favors, but I suppose if we put ourselves in Trev's shoes, we're looking at one of the biggest media providers in sports that you had a legal imbroglio with a scant few years ago putting their crosshairs on your program and setting their phasers to "smear". If anything, it may not look pretty, and it (understandably) doesn't sit well with folks, but perhaps silence was the best option Trev had at the time. Especially if ESPN had sent Mark May to do the interview.
  16. Regarding the topic at hand, one thing I noticed is that ESPN did seem to take several personal digs at Trev Alberts and his credibility throughout the piece. While I fully expected Alberts to get the shaft due to his contentious exit from ESPN, the piece seemed to be quite a bit more 'barbed' than a 'normal' smear piece from ESPN. I suppose bad blood still exists, or perhaps I'm reading too much into that relationship?
  17. Investment for who?...the taxpayer? You should run for office. It's an investment for the taxpayer sure, the community, the nation and its businesses... but I'll stop right there, I really don't want to get off topic and into general political issues. Government Spending is an investment. RedBlooded did not say "Government Spending is an investment". He said "I have no problem with funding education with taxes since that's an investment". Try addressing what was actually said instead of creating your own straw men to knock down and make yourself feel better. As for RB's statement, I agree. Our country's prosperity has proven this belief true multiple times over since public education was introduced, and this belief is one of the key points of separation between successful and unsuccessful economies in the world.
  18. I always stop down to digest as much college football as I can. Unfortunately, watching the Big XII this year will likely give me nausea and indigestion.
  19. An unfortunate stereotype to say the least. Not to toot my horn but I have a job, a 3.5 cumulative GPA heading into my senior year at UNL, a girlfriend of three years and several responsibilities. Yet I'm about as addicted to video games as one can be. Not everybody is a lazy video gamer. Thankfully, there are stereotypes for the lazy minded to latch onto so no effort need be expended to learn about others. Oh, and it appears Sony will be providing victims two free PS3 (not PSN, from what I understand) games from a choice of five titles: Link
  20. I have been talking about this most of the year. If he isn't fired I will not attend another game untilled he does. I had season fix and decided no more 2 years ago. I can't take this. We had a top notch team before he took over. And he pulled a solich, can't recruit and drowned a program. Not even making the big 12 tourny probably for the 3rd year in a row is flat unacceptable. Change needs to happen. ERSTAD '11/'12 I agree that change (read: MA's ouster) needs to happen, but I don't know if Erstad is the right man to fill that void. Plus, considering some of the rhetoric coming from Delany regarding B1G Baseball, there may be some (positive) changes in store for the conference to make it more competitive. We need someone experienced that can get Nebraska on top of the conference in front of these possible changes quickly. Someone had suggested the former Creighton player that's coaching Virginia right now would be a good candidate, but I don't know enough about him to say anything.
  21. They're finally getting their piece of the pie: Link to Matt's College Sports Media Blog Of note: This puts the Big XII firmly behind the B1G, SEC, and Pac-12. And while the ABC/ESPN part of the Big XII's contract is up in 2014/2015 (IIRC), the Pac-12 will have their network up and going, and those revenues don't have a ceiling and will be split by the conference. So now that we've entered the next era of television progression in college football, it's becoming readily apparent that conferences with their own networks will prosper and reap enormous windfalls when they, as a whole conference, provide a quality product to watch year round. The takeaway for Nebraska fans should be that: 1) poor-performing sports in the Big 10 *cough*BASEBALL*cough* will likely see their arcane scholarship laws removed and received a renewed focus on improving their product to help the bottom line, and 2) there is no way the Big XII will survive when all their immediate neighbors are major conferences that have their own networks and larger pieces of pie that are split equally, and 3) we're in an era where it's about ratings, baby. Nebraska can and does deliver the goods, and in order for our program to succeed, it should continue to lean (heavily) on its fanbase.
  22. Are you sure, Knapplc? I mean, the McRib is pretty damn tasty... ...crap, now I'm hungry. Thanks.
