  1. The University needs to show that they engaged in a good-faith attempt to interactively accommodate her once they were put on notice that she had a disability. It's not enough to simply claim that they fall under DOJ guidelines and not HUD guidelines - in discrimination cases involving students that's true, but once you start talking about where people live, it's a completely different animal. No pun intended.
  2. Bars in Lincoln close at 1am. You can buy booze in Lincoln at any grocery store 24/7, except on Sunday mornings until noon. Not sure about Gretna/Omaha. Main grocery stores around here are Hy-Vee, Super Saver (in Lincoln) and Wal-Mart superstores, but I recommend avoiding the Wal-Marts. For obvious reasons. The Haymarket is a region of downtown Lincoln from O Street to R street, 9th street to 7th street. It contains kitschy little shops and is the best concentration of restaurants in town, including The Oven, Lazlo's, Vincenzo's, El Portrero, Maggie's, Bread & Cup, Brewsky's, Buzzard Billy's, Old Chicago (which I'm sure you're familiar with), and for dessert Ivanna Cone, the best ice cream in Nebraska (7th & P, right across from Lazlo's). There are several bars down there as well, but the "main" bars are from 9th street east along O street. You will be thoroughly unimpressed with a runza. Try one just to try it, but you won't buy two. It's a traditional old food in Nebraska that is very meh. Valentino's pizza is slightly better than frozen pizza. 30 years ago it was fantastic, but they went corporate, lost their soul and now they make trash. Do not get their pizza. It is an absolute crime what they have turned that business into. There are no good pizza joints in Lincoln. If you want fantastic pizza come to my house on Friday and I'll make you a pie, regular, thin-crust or deep-dish. Misty's in the Havelock district (on Havelock Ave) is a traditional old restaurant in Husker folklore. They serve a mean prime rib and the Havelock location has a pep band every Friday night before the game. As many have mentioned, it is in dire need of renovation. The food is meat-and-potatoes, and decent. They have a downtown location at 11th & P, but I have heard way too many people talk about bad experiences there. The one time I went there I had a very bad experience with the server and I won't go back. For tailgating I highly recommend hitting the 'gates under the viaduct west of the stadium. I go over there before every game and it's a great time. Elk Creek Water is the shizzle. Just don't drink too much of it. The comparison to a screwdriver someone made up above is apt, but it's got about 10x the alcohol of a regular screwdriver. It tastes like a nice mix of orange and grapefruit juice and it will knock you on your keister. I-80 between Gretna and Lincoln gets VERY congested before games, so if you're coming down I recommend coming early in the AM to avoid traffic.
  3. WTF? Nobody talking about defense? I thought *everybody* was talking about defense. And not in a good way. Everybody where? News articles are probably 3:1 about the offense. Threads here at HuskerBoard are at least at that ratio, and I would say threads specifically about Taylor are 5:1 or greater than threads about the defense.
  4. Dirk asked a couple of days ago on Twitter what he should write about next, and listed off several things, none of which were related to the defense. My response: I've been meaning to post a big, long thread about the defense, and I was going to title it "Diagnosing the Defense," but to date I haven't had time to write it. Work is hectic right now.
  5. I've always thought cherry-picking the worst-case scenarios of the last 20 years was a legitimate form of criticism. As legit as saying all fans "suck" because of the behavior of a few, I know. It's a boorish argument.
  6. As funny as the Zoolander quotes were, I think the Collin/Conor McDermott one is the best of this page. I forgot all about these guys.
  7. It's sad how Ron Paul is being treated. Who decides he doesn't get a voice? Is that democracy?
  8. You know you're desperate for dirt when you go back 16 years to dig up the bones of the Lawrence Phillips saga.
  9. Exactly. And it's a crime that people have such a bad view of Madison. As one of your compatriots listed in another thread, Wisconsin has a LOT of academic success to boast about. It's a fine school producing well-educated people. That's what makes the crowd behavior - and I think the consensus is that it's almost entirely the students - so strange. Higher education and churlish behavior don't seem to go hand in hand. The unfortunate reality is that nearly everyone I've talked to or heard about won't be making a return trip to Madison the next time Nebraska plays. That kind of atmosphere isn't what Wisconsin is all about.
  10. The fact that a letter like that has to be sent out is bad enough. What's worse is that these chants have been going on for years according to fans of other Big Ten schools. I have a hard time understanding why this was tolerated for so long. I know for a fact that our fans are not the first to have complained about the students at Camp Randall.
  11. Already a thread on the subject. LINK
  12. Go vote for the team you like most in the "Most Beautiful Woman Draft" in the Shed. http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/55190-hottest-woman-draft-voting-thread/

  13. I was just looking at some poll numbers, and unless this is grossly in error, it looks like Obama is actually polling higher than any specific candidate. LINK
  14. You are right about Reed's blocking, mwj. He's missed a lot of blocks this year. That's something he needs to shore up.
  15. To be "shanghaied" is to be literally kidnapped and forced to work - usually on board ship. It's an old term that originated in Portland or Eugene, I think. Wiki article
  16. Does anyone know - is this the most debates by any challenging party in election history? This seems like a LOT of debates, especially this early. And gobigger is right - it seems like it's hurting the frontrunners more than anything.
  17. Now I feel like my head's been in the sand. What did I miss here?
  18. Maybe, or they'll kick it to Marlowe. Which brings up a good point - Nebraska has the #1/#2 (depending on the week) Kickoff Returner in the country. The kid has already taken one to the house and has another over 60 yards, and who-knows-how-many over 30 yards. So why are people still kicking to him? Why not kick it to Marlowe? Not complaining, just kind of scratching my head. Of course, Marlowe has speed to burn anyone as well, so if they don't have good coverage he's gone, too. Apparently people just want to see if the Freshman will screw up. He muffed the first kickoff of the year, and one punt, but otherwise he's been stellar.
  19. I think David's exclusion is unfair, and if I had to guess I'd say it has more to do with last year than this year. He's having a fine season, but judging by what he did last year, he's "off the pace."
  20. Minnesota is... not good. Even with Gray, they're not going to win. We just need to put some points on the board early and bury them, and don't give them a chance to hang around. These are their NCAA ranks halfway through the season. Not a single major offensive or defensive rank in the top half of the country. That's bad. Category - Rank Rushing Offense - 65 Passing Offense - 110 Total Offense - 110 Scoring Offense - 109 Rushing Defense - 77 Pass Efficiency Defense - 110 Total Defense - 91 Scoring Defense - 110 Net Punting - 35 Punt Returns - 33 Kickoff Returns - 37 Turnover Margin - 104 Pass Defense - 91 Passing Efficiency - 112 Sacks - T-112 Tackles For Loss - 79 Sacks Allowed - 82 And to further drive the point home, these rankings were earned against the #68 SOS in the country. It's not like they've played a tough schedule.
  21. Oh my lord. That has to be one of the best look-alikes we've had in years. Kudos!
  22. No, what's "too bad" is the way your fans behaved toward Husker fans in Madison.
  23. Let's be fair. This is a no-doubt-about-it apology: Last week I believed that the Ohio State game was a critical juncture for the quarterback and his head coach. If Martinez had played poorly against the Buckeyes, I believed coach Bo Pelini should have considered a change. Those issues are fair game for columns. But the tone wasn't as I intended. Some of my words were too personal for a college athlete. Too harsh for a 21-year old.For example, in last Friday's column, I referenced Martinez "pouting" during a press conference. I suggested that he "stop with the 'Woe is me.'" I wrote that negativity in the fan base threatens to "sap his confidence."For those comments and others like them, I apologize to Martinez.I had meant to summarize a wild week in Husker football. I meant to reflect fans' thoughts and comments, not to demean the quarterback. When's the last time you saw a journalist from just about any paper write something like this? It's pretty rare. I also don't think this is just something he wrote to save his ass. There may be some of that in there (the environment was pretty toxic), but he could have just toughed it out. He didn't have to write this.
  24. Had a chance to sleep on this. I don't know Jared and have never met the guy, but this still just makes me ill. Hard to say why I feel so bad for the guy, but I'm really upset by this. Bugger.
