Certainly if there was a time to fire him, it was after the .500 season, not when he'd just went 9-3. I've never really been convinced one way or the other on whether Solich would've done much better than that in the long-term, though. How would people have felt if Solich's record beyond 2003 looked about like Bo's 'consistently good but never quite great' results?

A big part of the problem was probably just that he went straight from position coach to a top-tier head coach job. How many other coaches can you think of who made that kind of a jump, let alone successfully? I always wonder how things would have went if Osborne had made him OC for his last five years or so. Maybe Solich would have been better prepared for the job. Then again, for all we know the offense could've ended up being weaker during Osborne's last few seasons, and we'd be short a few national championship trophies.

Certainly Eichorst took that precedent to heart...

Apparently Green was already leaning toward getting rid of Eichorst heading into last fall, supposedly due to lack of competitiveness across all sports. Wouldn't surprise me if Eichorst's personality had a lot to do with it, too. Even if you ignore his football dealings, Eichorst was just a complete phony who liked to talk about leadership but really knew nothing about it. But yeah, it's safe to say that NIU lit a fire under their ass with that one.

Did they ever? The guys who were on the team for that Purdue game, particularly - if they hadn't bought in by that point, do you think they ever really did? I suspect that a lot of the defense never really bought into either coordinator. I'm sure some players bought into individual position coaches like K. Williams. As for Riley and opinions of the staff as a whole? I think for a lot of the players, their buy-in was tenuous at best. Feeling good after a win, sure, but not enough to keep the faith long-term. And it had nothing to do with Bo and everything to do with Riley's complete failure to take control of his team after three years.

How often do they change that, compared to how often they change it in the stadium? I'd imagine the practice fields see more use, but they probably care more about how the stadium's field looks.

The way he worded it almost makes me wonder if he might hand them out to individuals, rather than the group. Like if there's one guy that Frost really feels has earned it, he's the one that gets it.
