  1. You'd be surprised. There's a furniture store here in Boston that does something similar - buy a bed or sofa in March and you get it free if the Red Sox win the WS. Then it actually happened in '04. So they did it again but specified the Sox had to sweep. Which happened in '07. They're doing it again this year. The store doesn't lose much if that happens - it's all insurance. And actually most people take the $$ they get back and buy more furniture, so the store actually loves it when the Sox win.
  2. Yeah. Big X (11?) looks bad. At least Purdue beat up Toledo!
  3. Uh it was the Japs that bomber Pearl Harbor That sound you just heard was that quote going right over your head. Forget it. He's rolling.
  4. Burning an "N" before the game is motivational. Besides, burning an "N" is not making physical contact. The Boise State player MADE PHYSICAL CONTACT with Blount. He pushed him. A lot? Certianly not. But he pushed the guy. After he had passed by. That's a chicken $hit move. And like I said, I'm not excusing what Blount did, not the punch nor the ridiculousness afterwards. But when you walk by a guy and push him, don't be surprised if you get a punch in the mouth. And you deserve it. And you deserve a suspension. My bit of frustration here is not that Blount got suspended (he got what he deserved, too), or that I think what he did was right (it was pretty awful), but the fact that this Boise player is being portrayed as a victim. HE STARTED IT! No one seems up in arms that he's not getting suspended, and I just can't figure out why. I'm also a bit puzzled as to why Boise thought it a good idea to show the reply on the jumbo-tron. That certainly didn't help to deflate the situation.
  5. Not to excuse Blount, but that Boise kid was asking for it and got what he deserved. I think it says a lot about Peterson that he didn't punish his player. Oh, wait, they're "going to talk about it". Kudos to Kelly for not only suspending his player but making him come to practice and trying to teach him something.
  6. Cacti, can't believe you posted this since we beat you to the number one spot... I am so glad so many Husker fans get to experience our entrance in TWO WEEKS!!! We loved the atmosphere in Lincoln and we hope you will be as pumped in Blacksburg! I've experienced both (including actually running down the hill with the team at Clemson), and obviously I'm a little biased, but I was extremely impressed and intimidated by Enter Sandman. Va Techs entrance look freakin awesome! I'm sorry but that beats the tunnel walk for getting me pumped up! But thats just my opinion. South Carolina's isn't that good though IMO. Meh. They're just playing a song as they run onto the field (I know, so's Nebraska's, but at least there's the video highlights and they're walking through a line of fans). And all the noise is from the sound system - they just turn up the volume. And the song is about falling asleep. Meh. BUT - much better than Florida State's and South Carolina's. And MUCH better than Notre Dame.
  7. Someone beat me to Cpt. Kangaroo, but how about Willi Chevalier (World Mustache Champion in the partial beard freestyle category):
  8. For those of you who actually believe the HS kid on this thread ran a 4.45 electronic, that Helu ran a 4.25, that Ted Ginn ran a 4.06 (seriously, 4.06?), and that any of these numbers should be taken seriously, I direct you here: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog...rn=ncaaf,181904 here: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog...rn=ncaaf,147026 here: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog...rn=ncaaf,144692 and here: http://speedendurance.com/2009/08/06/40-ya...nd-ben-johnson/ These times are 99 if not 100% BS. I wouldn't be surprised if some are made up to the point where the guy in question doesn't even run, but some coach makes up a number in his head based on one time when he saw the guy running in practice or something.
  9. wasn't that in columbia? I'm sure Crouch had a carry or 2 against Mizzou in Lincoln. But the run I'm guessing you're talking about was indeed in Columbia. I saw this post and couldn't think of many "memorable" plays in Lincoln. It seems most of the best plays I remember were either on the road (the aforementioned Crouch run, the "flea-kicker", Rogers in the '71 OU game) or in a bowl (fumble-rooskie in the '84 OB, Tommie's run against UF, either of Schlesinger's runs against Miami). I'm sad to say I've only been to 1 Husker home game - '94 vs. Okie State. Most memorable play from that game - botched extra point, with the holder throwing a 2 point conversion to the kicker - FJM favorite Darin Erstad.
  10. I think you're missing the point. The list wasn't just about which teams generate the most money for their particular athletic department or sport, but was also about which teams generate revenue for the local economy and also for the academic areas and the school as a whole. I'd be ecstatic as a booster for Arkansas or USC, since the money generated for the school and local economy would do more to generate more wealthy boosters than a good football program would.
  11. This has got to be the most ridiculous thing I've read in a long time! What are you a Longhorn booster? Or do you just enjoy the taste of TU's ass? I'm tired of fans acting as if NU is the bastard stepchild of the Big 12. Without the Huskers there would not be a Big 12 conference. I'm gonna stop now cause I feel like flaming the $h!# out you for this one! I'm guessing he was being sarcastic. Kicking Nebraska out would be ridiculous, but Texas does in fact think they run this conference (the state of Texas, that is). I remember when the Big XII formed it was the Big 8 bailing out Texas and aTm since the SWC was folding (partly due to Arkansas bolting but mainly due to the massive amount of cheating at SMU but also aTm). The Big 8 also took TTech and Baylor so they could get their 12 members and have a CCG, but it was still the Big 8 bailing out Texas and aTm. And no sooner did that happen then the conference basketball tournament was moved out of KC and into Dallas, the football championship had to be rotated to Texas, the conference offices had to be moved to Texas, the list goes on. Texas does think they own this conference. But to be honest, in the age we're in with the big TV contracts and all that, having Texas (the state) as part of the conference is a very good thing. There's a ton of football talent there that considers not just UT and aTm but the rest of the conference as the "hometown" conference, and the fact that there are so many TVs in Texas could do a lot to help the conference's bargaining, and that's probably (or at least should be) the main argument of the original post. I don't think having a conference network is a good idea, and I don't think the original post was advocating that, but a better TV deal could be had. Fox currently doesn't have regular season games on its broadcast network (it's part of the reason ESPN now has the BCS contract) so there's no reason the Big XII shouldn't be able to negotiate a good deal with Fox (NBC is never letting go of ND, we all hate them but that's a fantasy) and get its regular season games on network TV, especially considering the viewing markets Texas brings to the table - Houston is, I believe, the 4th largest city in the country, and Dallas and San Antonio are attractive as well. They make KC, St. Louis, and Denver (not to mention the HUGE national following of NU and UT) that much more appealing, and if that was the original argument of the post, then I whole heartedly agree.
  12. That wouldn't count with this rule. This rule is to prevent pre-score antics and not what happens after the score. Somebody could have already called Henery's celebration unsportsmanlike. What Henery did would not be considered "unsportsmanlike". I think some people are starting to think that you can't celebrate or show emotion any more, and that's just not the case. You just can't taunt your opponent. There won't be a penalty for jumping up and down in the endzone with your teammates AFTER they score, and there won't be a penalty for running around with your hands in the air AFTER you score. There will be a penalty for taunting before and after you score. And I say again: the biggest reason they do this is to stop the fighting and brawls before they start and prevent someone from getting seriously injured as a result. My biggest example of this is that TO thing in Dallas when he was with SF. He taunted his opponent and got speared and it almost started a brawl. That's bad enough in pro sports but the ramifications in college are more serious. Universities are charged with basically being surrogate parents and they have to do everything possible to stop this crap before it starts. And if you don't think setting a good example at the college level is important, you haven't been to a HS or youth sporting event recently. Now off my
  13. I think most people see this type of rule and have a knee-jerk reaction without thinking about the "why's" of implementing it. If there is taunting and unsportsmanlike behavior against one team and the officials don't (or can't) take care of it, that team is going to want to take care of it, and the end result could end up being a lot worse than 15 yards or points off the board. If they didn't throw flags for things like this then the brawls that you see like the SC/Clemson fight a couple of years ago would be a lot more common. That resulted in teams missing bowl games.
  14. When I lived in KC I always hated Whitlock. Fro Daddy is right on about his race rants, etc. But he's right about one thing - Coffman is hands down the best player on Mizzou's team. No doubt about it. Sorry, Maclin, you're explosive and exciting but Coffman is about as good as you can get at TE. I don't know about Christensen being overrated, though, as that offense was pretty potent, even with Daniel at the helm. Quite possibly the most overrated QB in the country. Guy has no arm strength and no mobility. He hasn't taken a snap under center in his life; he's even farther back when he gets the snap than your typical shotgun. So give Christensen credit for knowing what to do with a fat, immobile QB with no arm strength. At least he's not having him run the option or throw the ball down field.
  15. Mushmouth is my favorite. He just called "Touchdown!!" before the receiver even caught the ball. I just wish he and Herbstreit would quit making these veiled pumps for a playoff.
  16. The one I just got done reading said "knee infection". I don't know how that can happen unless you've had surgery or something. If it was indeed an injury, he's a tough SOB to be out there getting pummelled like he did.
  17. SC's safety just got a personal foul for hitting his own player in the helmet.
  18. What a great game. Not the actual game on the field today, but the event in general. The parade, the pre-game, ABC actually showing the bands at halftime, the sun setting and turning the mountains purple in the second half. I love New Year's Day football. But Penn St. is getting rectal raped out there. Holy crap. I figured they were bad, but this is insane. I'm wondering if JoPa will try to win in the second half or just keep from getting embarrassed.
  19. He don't need no stinking fullback.
  20. Man, I'm not sure I can respect you as a poster. Keith Jackson has never had more insight into football than "Woah Nelly!" My favorite Keith Jackson moment: that gut-wrenching loss to KSU back in '98. I don't think he ever said "Kansas State" or "Wildcats". He called them "Penn State" and "Jayhawks" the entire game. It was farking great. It's gotta be tough sometimes to get some things right out there, but at least know who's playing.
  21. How about Swift, Peterson, and Lucky getting the chance to play on Sundays? Oh, you mean next year's Cornhuskers. Fewer gifts for the opposing teams. There were simply too many penalties, mental breakdowns, and turnovers this year. Most of them at the absolute worst times.
  22. Craig James is good. He is the only non-idiot you have listed. I've hated that guy's work ever since the early/mid '90s when he picked against Nebraska in every bowl game they played in. Why? "Because the game is on grass." Not because Miami/FSU were usually much better/faster in all those games, but simply because the game was on grass. Made that '95 OB that much sweeter for me. Maybe he's gotten better, but I just can't even listen to him talk without getting morbidly pi$$ed.
  23. The game was over four hours long. They probably had to switch over ASAP so their grandmothers wouldn't get mad at them for missing Judge Judy. And I absolutely love Dan Fouts. He's such a loveable idiot, and is so much fun to laugh at. Remember that Miller Lite commercial he was in with Ken Stabler? "Table for Mr. I-Don't-Have-As-Many-Passing-Yards-As-Dan-Fouts." "Hey, that's you! Hehe!" Yeah, he's kinda dumb, but I'd take him over Keith Jackson, Mark May, Lou Holtz, and Craig James any day.
  24. wow. Crazy. Love the career passing yds. Joey played 16 games in his career finished 8 yds behind Tommie. My oh my how times have changed Note that the Frazier one is actually TOTAL yards, not passing. Ganz absolutely blows Tommie away in passing yards.
