  3. Since early retirement is on my mind, this thread caught my eye. Affordable healthcare is one of the considerations you need to take into account if you retire before 65 and medicare kicks in. Used the calculator for myself and wife, came up with about $ 431 a month for the silver plan premium. Now, the much larger worry is the talk of raising it from 62 to 64. Just hoping they hold off for 412 days. ( Not that I'm counting or anything...)
  4. Thanks for the new heading. Hope others respond, need all the help I can get using my smartphone. Found the app "Tool Box (free)" from Google Play for my work. Has 19 utilities in one place. - Compass, Leveler, length measuring tool, Protractor, Vibrometer, Magnetic Field Detector, Altimeter, Flashlight, Unit Converter, magnifer, Calculator, Abacus, counter, Score Board, Roulette, Barcode Reader, stopwatch, timer and Metronome. I use the magnifier alot; if I need to zoom in on a motor faceplate and will allow you to take a picture if you want. For Android 2.2 and up, and uses 3.0 mb of space. As stated, it's free and can be downloaded from Google Play.
  5. Wife gave me her tablet that she no longer wanted to haul around. Thought I would try out ebooks and lighten the load in my backpack. Heck, I just got my first 'smartphone' 5 months ago...yea, I still wear a watch every day. Discovered Zinio digital magazines through my local library. Now I can catch up on some mags I would sometimes get: Bicycle times and Bicycling Canoe and Kayak Outside and Backpacker Nice addition to the ebooks, audio books, and freegal music they offer. Couldn't find my copy of " King Rat " so stopped in at the main branch and checked it out. ( will always enjoy holding a book...) Find that I need to reread it every 3 months or so, same with the Foundation Series by Asimov. You can teach an old dog a new trick!
  6. Unlike some sources, think the Titans had a good draft. Addressed OL needs ( have plenty ) Of course we had to take a Vol and WR Justin Hunter should help down the road. Happy that we selected Stafford.
  7. The Man With The Golden Arm - Nelson Algren A friend got me this after finding to his disbelief, I had never read it. He assumed that since I liked Charles Bukowski, I had read it years ago. Guess I dismissed it after seeing the movie, which was just OK. He said it might be hard to get through the first half, but to hang in there. So far that hasn't been a problem; enjoy the street slang from that period. Can see why it won the first ever National Book Award.
  8. Need a category for those of us who married into it. Was doing fine becoming a Husker fan; but still followed my 'other' team. Now the 'other' team is playing BigRed in a bowl game. I choose to go to work today...
  9. Thinking about catching the Yonder Mountain String Band on the 11th, ( if I can find my tie-dye shirt...)
  10. All Hands Down: The True Story of the Soviet Attack on the USS Scorpion by Jerome Preisler, Kenneth Sewell Another book from my list on the subject of the Cold War. We were living in Hawaii when this happen; my dad was stationed at Pearl Harbor. So far, a very informative book.
  11. Joined up right out of High School, 1969 Did 20+ "A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America " for an amount of "up to and including my life."
  12. Predict that I will be sitting at the watchsite across from Vandy, waiting to cheer as Big Red takes the field. Predict watching the game with other Husker fans and enjoying it, no matter the outcome. Predict NU by 9 or more...
  13. Our "Live on the Green" free concert series continues Thursday with the Alabama Shakes. So far, we have had Dr. John, The Wallflowers, and the North Mississippi Allstars. A 6 week series of concerts. Great crowds, Great music. Another reason I moved here...
  14. Tend to listen to the older stuff. But I've been known to walk a block from work on friday night and catch the local talent at the Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar.
  15. If what I read is correct: - The semifinals will rotate between 6 sites ( Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, Orange ) and 2 to be named. ( count on Alanta being one of those two ). - The Final game is bid on by any city, and the cities that host the semifinals can also bid for that game. - A selection committee made up of conference commissioners and college athletic directors will pick the 4 teams. Other than adding 2 teams to the mix, as of now, I don't see this as an improvement.

  17. David Gilmour: live in Gdansk on Palladia channel. Wife's yelling it's too loud. Got out the headphones.
  18. Always up for more on this story. This is a good book dealing with some info not covered by other books on the subject. Will it change your mind? Probably not. I'm reading this when the History channel is not showing one of those 'Alien' shows...
  19. Knapplc, best thing I ever did was get back out there. My oldest son upgraded, so I got his Trek 4900 MTB ( think he was embrassed to be around an old guy on a Scwinn Varsity...) Put street tires on it, so use it to commute to work. It's about 6 miles each way and I'm only doing 1 to 2 days a week this winter. Hope to get to 4 days this summer. I am closer to 60 then 20, so I needed something to put up a fight against nature. It's 54° here and I'm going out for a ride!
  20. Probably starting a thread about cycling in the dead of winter makes little sense, but the weather has been great so far. Getting in more miles than usual. Anyone else out and about on the road or trails ? New addition to my morning commute: Since I have to have some coffee ( with or without octane...) never was safisfied with how to carry some to get me down the road. Remembered that a while back I purchased a bottle of "B & B" that came with this little 12oz, double walled thermos. It fits great into this cozy thing my wife got me and fits really well in my bottle cage. Now I find an excuse to stop on the way and get a fix.
  21. Also excited about the upcoming season. Question. Will I be able to watch any Husker games on Big10 network? Since work makes it easy to go to Vandy games, will get my live college fix. ( or find me at the Nashville Sounds games when they are in town...) BaseballAmerica preseason Top 25: http://www.baseballa...12/2612851.html
  22. Slaying the Badger: LeMond, Hinault and the Greatest Ever Tour de France by Richard Moore After LeMond helped the 'Badger' win the 85 tour, he promised to return the favor and help Greg win in 86. A really good read about what happened in one of the great duels of the Tour. A good sports book, even if you don't give two hoots about bike competition or the Tour.
