Henry a Husker?

It sounds that way.

Offensive lineman Ricky Henry appears to be the 14th member of Nebraska's 2008 recruiting class. The former Omaha Burke standout, who signed with Nebraska in 2006 but was declared academically ineligible, plans to head to Lincoln after graduating in May from North Dakota State College of Science.

“He’s coming," NDSCS offesnive coordinator Mike Shafer said. "He’s there. I spoke to Dennis (Wagner) and everything.”

Shafer said he asked Wagner, Nebraska's offensive line coach, for clarification. Was there a scholarship offer for Henry, and would Nebraska accept his commitment?

“He said, ‘Yes, as long as he’s in good academic standing.' " Shafer said.

That, of course, is the catch, although Shafer said Henry has done well in the classroom. He took 21 credits last semester, Shafer said, and had a GPA of 2.6. He's taking summer classes and will take about 16 credits this fall, and 16 more in the spring.

“Dennis said, ‘We always thought that Ricky was a Cornhusker.’ They’re pretty excited," Shafer said.

Wagner can't comment to us, obviously, on Henry's status. Neither can recruiting coordinator Ted Gilmore; so it's unclear whether Henry is counting as an official oral commitment at this time. But from what Wagner told Shafer, Henry is welcome in Lincoln with good grades.

Shafer said Henry isn't interested in other schools; he had offers from Houston and Colorado and strong interest from Georgia, Oklahoma State and Kansas.

Henry, who plays right guard, will line up this fall at NDSCS alongside Aaron Schulte, a member of Nebraska's 2007 recruiting class who didn't qualify. Schulte is playing right tackle.

As for Henry?

“He’s one of the nastiest guys I’ve ever seen," Shafer said. "He’s got a mean streak in him that never quits.

“He’s just got better as far as footwork and agility and all that stuff.”
