Recruiting

it is very early, it depends on how the staff wants to approach it, they might always one to make late pushes on kids. The staff has a disadvantage from not being here last fall for the next year seniors. Definitly don't push a panic button, NU has one guy (Pensick), expect if NU offers some more instate guys that they will commit sooner, but I am sure more will come by Feb 18 next year

The Texas' and USC's of the world are always going to have the early and big-name commits. They obviously have many more in-state recruits to look at. Other reasons include their success in recent years, and their loaction (warmer placces usually attract kids who like the warmer weather). NU has caoches who have been off the big time coaching perspective for years. Some of them will have to rebuild the ties they had and grow new ones. I personally am not concerened, look at the class Pelini pulled in after the decommited ran all the way to double-digit numbers. Add the dead period and its likely one of the greatest recruiting jobs in NU history. Do not worry the recruits will come, the time of which they come shouldnt matter since a majority of recruits open up their recruiting their senior year after already commiting to a school.

February 18th? That would be well past the first Wednesday of that month (signing day)

How come Nebraska doesnt get any early commitments like the texas',USC's, or OSU's oh the world. is it becuase it has been some down years, or when do most recruits start commiting. It seems that a lot of the top ones are already on there way somewhere.

Simple answer.

All 3 schools you mentioned are in high population states and areas where talent is abundant. All 3 schools are national powers. And all 3 schools are schools in which those local stars grow up dreaming of playing for.

Just like when most highly rated kids from Nebraska come out, they dream of playing for the Huskers. It is really no different except in the fact we are not a highly populated state nor are we a talent rich state.

If the situation were reversed, no matter our record, we would have quite a few early commits. Unfortunately for us, we will ALWAYS have to work for those highly rated kids.

Of course the other thing to keep in mind is those coaches also had a head start on our staff. I'm not sure when coaches are allowed to make their first contact with underclassmen, but I'm guessing it is well before Bo and company came in.

Texas has a special position on their staff specifically to handle all high school coach contacts, as well as be a liason between the university and the recruit when he committs and eventually signs. Ken Rucker : Director of High School Relations and Player Development. He's not technically a coach. Almost all of the high school coaches have a relationship of one kind or another with UT/Mack Brown. So the kids hear "Good job, Kid. Ya might make the Longhorns someday playin' like that!" So Mr. Rucker has contact with state high school coaches, coordinates camps, knows the coaches who know the players. So it's like they all(most) grow up wanting to be shorttusks and Mack chooses the ones he wants. That is known to high school players, of which there many in Texas. "You better sign soon, there's four more waiting for the chance I'm giving you, now." Next thing you know, Texas has only 5 or 6 spots left for '09.
