So I was about 3 miles into a 6 mile run today when I started getting a pretty good pain in my right foot. I figured I'd quit being a wimp and try to push myself through it and only made it another 1/2 mile before I had to stop from the pain. It's on the bottom of my foot and starts from the front of my heel to the ball of my foot. On a scale from 1 to 10 it's a 6 or so when I try to walk on it. It feels like I strained a tendon or something and 3 advil barely took the edge off. Any advice? I was thinking it may be plantar faciitis and wonder what I could do at home or should I just go to a podiatrist? Thanks ahead of time for the suggestions.

personnaly i would get it checked out. This comeing from a guy who was broken both of his feet, on the same day, two years apart. (left in 96, right in 98. October 21st is a day I stay home from work and dont go anywhere :) )

If it is a consistant pain and doesnt go away within a day I would go. You never know. When I broke my right foot I finished football practice and went to work before the pain became too much. The specialist I saw said that I did so much damage by continueing to push through the pain that at the time he gave me only a 50% chance of doing anything more than just walking the rest of my life (no running, jogging, jumping = no sports.) I was 16 at the time and that scared the living you know what right out of me. So overly cautious or not, I would go

:yeah

I with Fro Daddy on this one!! Seek medical attention, it is to easy to aggravate an injury to your foot to cause more damage and more down time.

when was the last time you bought new running shoes? Most runners I think suggest new shoes every 300-500 miles. I think plantar fasciitis is only on the bottom of the heel isn't it? http://www.plantar-fasciitis.org/

Does it still hurt or does the pain subside a few hours after you stop running?

You might just have strained something, like you said. I think I've done that before too.

If it's just the first time this has happened I'd personally wait a few days to see if it goes away (no running on it)...and if it does, gradually get back into running to see if it comes back.

Of course, I'm one who doesn't like to go to the doctor over every little problem I have. I sprained my ankle Tuesday night playing soccer and it hurt so bad in the morning that I was worried I might have fractured or broke it. My girlfriend talked me into going to the doctor's even though I just knew they would tell me it was a sprain and would suggest doing what I was already doing for it...ice and elevate it. Sure enough, after the co-pay and x-ray, it's just a sprain. A level two sprain, but there was nothing they could do but prescribe me an ankle boot that I knew was going to be $100+ just so I could walk around. I decided I'd be alright with a bottle of Aleve and some ice instead ;)

I got screwed. I did the same thing, but instead of just getting aleve and ice, i got a cast and crutches for 8 weeks, a walking cast for 4 more and 3 months rehab. <_<

well, i got a bag of what the chinese refer(haha refer) to as a "natural aspirin" and "cure all".... but as an police officer im sure you probably wouldn't want to use it. it wouldn't solve the problem, but it would kill the pain.

Between the ball and the heel as in the arch of the foot? I'd agree with the earlier comment on your shoe status. You might be getting insufficient support for the type of arch you have, which could lead to ligament sprain in your arches. If it happend while you were running, it's a good chance that's it. If it hurts during normal, casual walking...you prob should go get it checked out. If not, RICE it and pop some Ibuprofin. Also, are you stretching properly before/after your runs? It's the best way to prevent sprained/pulled muscles...good luck!

Christ! Be a man, BRI! Run through it! If it gets sooooooo bad you can't take it, then HOP! You wanna give up now? "Ooooooooooooh, my foot hurts - I'll just stop now." What are you, some kind of pencil-necked geek? Want real men to kick sand in your face?

Hell, what's the worst that can happen? Amputation? So what? If you're a real man, in fact, you'll pull out your pocket knife and do it yourself - and then finish the run with a limp but with pride.

I swear - kids today. Soft, all of 'em.

I've had something simliar to this before, but never this bad. I just got new running shoes yesterday and used them running when this happened. These shoes were specially fitted for my feet by one of the local sport stores that take that very seriously. They are Asics-Gel Nimbus and I have had three pairs in a row of them and have never had problems in the past. Obviously, the style of the shoe has changed, but the shoe itself has not.

Yep, it's in the arch.
