zinner111
Ok, I know I'm late getting to this but I'm watching the K-state game right now getting amped for tomorrow. I'm noticing that Gomes is lined up alongside David at LB, with Prince and Dennard covering the outside receivers, Hagg covering the slot/TE and PJ smith and Thenarse at safety. Anyone else notice this? They are also running Prince on corner run-support blitzes and leaving safety help behind. Quote Link to comment
zoogs
Sounds like that could be our Dime package, rather than Dejon being a LB over Whaley/Martin. I guess with the way we do positions on defense, who knows. Quote Link to comment

I think what this really tells us is that they are VERY committed to stopping the big play. And, hey, if it works against a back like Thomas, more power to them. Quote Link to comment
HuskersNow
This isn't that new. He basically played linebacker most of last year. Even though he is pretty small for a linebacker, I would rather have him out there than guys like Martin or Whaley who are liabilities with their propensity for being out of position and not hitting the right hole on run plays. Yeah, we have a bit of an unconventional defense. There's the peso for one thing, as a base look instead of 3 linebackers. With Compton and Fisher out, I think this is the coaches saying, "Our best 11 guys means 3 safeties and 1 linebacker." A bit of an indictment on the progress of Whaley/Martin, I suppose, but when it's between Whaley/Martin or PJ Smith on the field, I can see you going PJ. So just like last year, we may be sitting in the dime most of the time, regardless of the offensive look - just because that puts our best eleven defenders on the field. Quote Link to comment
zinner111
Not to befuddle the point....but i just watched a 3rd and 5 play where we had 3-2-6 look with Cameron Meredith at LB. Those crazy brothers... Quote Link to comment

irafreak
One of the Nebraska writers noted Gomes at linebacker too... Quote Link to comment
husk3rf8n
I wonder what other teams will do to take advantage of this kind of lineup by NU. I guess it would be just running smash mouth football at the Husker D. Thoughts? Quote Link to comment
Blackshirt316
Gomes slides down to LB and PJ Smith comes in at SS in our dime package. The funny looks start when other guys that aren't in the back 7 rotation get into the linebacker sets... Meredith got in there against KSU, Allen got in there against Washington etc. Quote Link to comment

We still have a pretty good front, and if this takes other teams out of their game plan and away from their strengths, that would be to our advantage. Quote Link to comment
