10 wins.... Really?

Staying with something that works = betting the defense won't stop it once they know you are staying with it.

That's why you change things up...

I remember when people were calling for no more zone read, they were stopping it. A short while later, it was "Zone read with Rex was working beautifully. And we go away from it again, great."

Most play callers wait for it to be stopped before switching. Wats apparently waits for one bad snap and throws the wildcat out the window.

If players "execute" then it doesn't matter what play you call. Call a touchdown every play! Then, if we don;t get a touchdown its the players' fault.

Time for coaches to answer for this crap!!!

I agree. As I sit here with my beer trying to come up with an answer, or an opinion or hell a thought all I can do is seethe. I think the biggest thing that I noticed was poor operations management tonight. I'm sure there is another term for it or some bullsh#t about coaching and situational percentages and all that shyte, but frankly I saw poor operational leadership on the part of the coaches. If you have one qb who is no longer the threat or as big of a threat due to injuries and this is compounded by poor decision making, being rattled and a host of other issues and it is not getting better but worse as the game goes on then you pull him plain and simple. It was perfectly obvious to me that OU did not see Martinez as any kind of real run threat and they certainly did not respect his passing abilities = they keyed on the real threats in each situation; especially in the late 3rd and 4th. My point is that if your personnel are struggling and you have other options or can change to something simple that works then do it. There is no point in trudging on allowing your tactics to flat out suck.

I'm trying to put this pain in historical perspective. It's not easy to get over the hump.

It took Osborne 21 years to win a national championship, and most years there were only one or two tough games in the Big 8.

Tommy Frazier's freshman season was uneven.

I look at those factors and say we're still headed in the right direction. Bo should win one more game this year than last, a little improvement each year.

In the realm of excuses:

Tonight, the Huskers were playing with a hobbled QB. (Yes, I would have liked to see Green in the fourth quarter, when it was pretty clear Martinez wasn't going to get it done.) Blast Niles Paul all you will, he's the fastest guy on the team and, at a minimum, he makes the defense just a bit more honest.

That said:

Bo let the season become a circus; I think that falls on him. I want to excuse the guy and as a coach I'm sure I'd be more like Bo than Osborne, but he lost control of himself at A&M. We'll never know fully how the team was affected.

That meltdown happened after the offensive stall that followed Martinez's injury. Even with T-Mart hurt and Paul out, we had enough weapons to score one stinkin' touchdown in the second half tonight. ISU and KU shouldn't have been so close. We had enough weapons to score one stinkin' touchdown at A&M. There must be an OC out there who can fix this.

Play-calling in the fourth quarter was bizarre. We're moving with the Wildcat, at the edge of field-goal range, and we roll the dice with the pass to Martinez. Try the pass to Martinez .... after we have one more first down ... (Now, if Rex hadn't been rushed and he's able to get that off while T-Mart was open, the tenor of this discussion is completely different. But that didn't happen. OU made key plays and we didn't, and had better ball security.)

I think the team lacked player leadership. There's clear discord on the team about Martinez, I believe that stuff. He spent the year barely congratulating his mates. The seniors on offense didn't lead. Helu fumbled too much. Maybe Burkhead steps up as the vocal leader next year; he seems to have the character. Maybe Crick steps up on the D side.

With such a fiery coach, it seemed like the team lacked a consistent fire. Except Burkhead.

While we lost three games by a total of 13 points (though Texas wasn't really that close), we'll never have a weaker schedule. It's way better than the Callahan/Cosgrove years. I just enjoy that we play defense again. But Bo has growing to do in terms of staying even-keeled himself and fostering leadership among the players. And the offense needs fixed, it's pretty clear.

I've never really had a problem with loses, it has always been the way the lose happens. If you get beat by a better team then so be it. The last two years have been tough. I'm not even going to get into the BC era.

Yeah, seems like its been a long time since we've had a real strong showing, where one team didn't look bad. I'd feel better about the loss if we played our best game, unfortunately we didn't.

I thought most play callers on both O and D would try to stay one step in front of the other - but that could just be me.

I feel if he did do what you suggested, he might be criticized for continuing to do something even when it was obviously not working.

Good lord.... Some of you people really piss me off. 10 win season, boys play their hearts out in the Big 12 Championship and come out a little short, and you're all over Tmagic, coaches, and others about the loss? Do you not think every player in that locker room feels 100 times as bad as we all do right now?

I can see some blame on Watson. On a few aspects of the coaching. But 10 wins... Give them some credit. A 10 win season is something millions of fans dream about their teams achieving. We get it, and oh look, we're not content. Okay, get rid of Watson. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me. But don't let a few bad performances outline what this team has accomplished.

We will likely have 11 wins this season. 11. And we're not happy? Okayyy. Cool.

Be disgruntled all you want, be pissed at the coaches, but for the love of God at least get off of Taylor's back. He gave it his all, after all of you accused him of quitting the team, and not having his heart set on playing at Nebraska. You all tossed him under the bus. He had no support coming in. But he tried. He tried damn hard. Did that look like an athlete who wasn't interested in his team? I don't think so.

Calm down husker nation. There's always next year.

You're right about coming down too hard on the team, but the coaches deserver it. Let's take a look at our marvelous ten wins:

W- Western Kentucky- 49-10

W- Idaho- 38-17

W- Washington- 56-21

W- South Dakota State- 17-3

Many people were waving red flags after this game, but even more(including me) were still drinking the T-magic koolaid.

W- Kansas State- 48-13

L- Texas- 20-13

Excuse after this game is Texas just owns us.

W- #14 Oklahoma State- 51-41

W- #6 Missouri- 31-17

Our only two quality wins this season are Mizzou and OSU.

W(OT)- Iowa State- 31-30

W-Kansas- 20-3

L- #19 Texas A&M- 9-6

W- Colorado- 45-17

L- #9 Oklahoma- 23-20

Judging from those impressive wins, what exactly looks promising next year?

W- Fresno State

W- Washington

W- Wyoming

L- Wisconsin

L- Ohio State

W- Minnesota

L- Michigan State

W- Northwestern

W- Penn State

L- Michigan

L- Iowa

We'll be thrilled for the insight bowl this time next year. This was a cupcake schedule, and if we had an offense we'd be top 5 and in ncg discussions. Unfortunately I think the problems on offense go deeper than Watson.

No go back and count how many of them wins came against opponents with a winning record.

Again feel free to take the next week off of huskerboard as complaining is all we are going to be doing. How can you NOT complain. Our offense robs us again for the second year in a row.

Some blame on Watson? Are you serious? The guy is a HORRIBLE play caller let alone a coach. The guy couldn't script a decent game plan let alone coach one. He NEEDS TO GO! By no means was this our QBs' fault. It was the OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR and to some degree Bo's!

Some blame. Yup. Did Watson give up 455 yards? I don't think so. He gets the majority of the blame, yeah, but there is certainly some that goes elsewhere.

I never said this was our QB's fault. It wasn't at all. Read my post.

Husker33, this isn't Middling U. I don't care about the millions of other fans. This is Nebraska. 10 wins and another CCG loss doesn't cut it.

Although I'm fast becoming afraid that we're going to have to get used to it.

WYHusk, you are delusional.

I think it's probably a 50-50 split on which one of you is delusional. I'm siding with WYHusk on this one. Another bust of a season. We won the north. Wahoo. We are a better team than our record shows and THAT'S what is frustrating.

I'm happy with 10 wins and a real shot at the last Big XII title. Sure, I wanted to win, but it was still a good (though frustrating at times) season. And we're going to a bowl, which is always good.

However, there are definitely some issues that need to be worked out. The main one is Watson, and by worked out, I mean shown the door before next season. He's had his chance and he's shown over and over he's not going to perform consistently. Sorry, but that's not good enough here. You are the weakest link. Goodbye.

We beat Missouri and Oklahoma State this year. Id say they are pretty good teams. While I dont agree with some of Watson's calls, a lot of it was just players execution. If the o-line blocked on the pass call to Martinez, its an easy TD. Our offensive line did not play well, what would you have done? Run the ball more? Pass more and lose more yardage on sacks. Its amazing how many fans turn on this team after one game. We lost by 3 points to a very good Oklahoma team. We didnt play our best and we turned the ball over too much. If anything, this loss falls more on the players then the coaches. The coaches were not out there fumbling the ball and throwing interceptions.

i agree with some of your points but how many yards a pop was Rex getting while running the Wild Cat. Hell, OU's secondary was more scared of his passing threat then they were of Taylors! I just don't understand Watson's thinking.....Run something until the other team shuts it down. It was obvious that OU was NOT shutting down Rex in the Wild Cat!!!

Which is precisely why SW ditched it. It wouldn't be "multiple" to stay with something that works.

OK. What makes a good offensive coordinator is knowing what plays to call in certain situations. In that situation, Watson called the perfect play, we just didnt execute it. Who knows how many yards we would have gotten if we would have ran it. Oklahoma stuffed the box, and Martinez was wide open. Our offensive line blocks and its a good snap, we have a touchdown and take the lead. Why run something until the other team shuts it down when you can run something that will get you a TD? If we score on that play, we win the Big 12- OU was not going to score a TD, and everyone is saying how great a call it was. Even during the game at that point, people on here were saying theyd like to see a throw to Martinez, and after it doesnt work, not because of Watsons call, but because of the players fault, everyone hates Watson. Hate Watson all you want, but he did not lose us this game.

Sigh....I'd love to hear your explanation of why with 3rd and 8 on the OU 39 with Alex kicking 60+ yard bombs we put taylor in the shotgun to get sacked for the...wait for it....7th time! Writing on the wall...

I know it's too early to predict our schedule, and do to the fact that I am drunk and pissed....I don't see us beating NW or PSU next year. Watson will get outcoached by both of those coaches. Hell, at this rate Fresno State may not be a give me next year either!

I was being optimistic. Also, I forgot to highlight the EFFING OVERTIME WITH IOWA EFFING STATE. Where'd my drink go?

:rollin:rollin

Good to laugh a little. But your right, it will be tough to win 10 games again next year, not impossible but tough.

GBR!!!
