Sophomore quarterback Taylor Martinez is the leading candidate to engineer Nebraska’s new-look offensive attack under offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Martinez was one of the breakout stars in college football as a redshirt freshman in 2010. The California native shattered numerous Nebraska freshman records, while challenging several other Husker quarterback records.

Martinez’s lightning-quick running ability makes him a home-run threat as a runner. He amassed better than 950 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in 2010, while averaging better than six yards per carry. Martinez fell just short of becoming the third freshman quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards. He has also posted the top five single-game rushing efforts ever for a Nebraska freshman quarterback and his 241 rushing yards at Kansas State were an NU quarterback record.

The 6-1, 205-pound Martinez also showed his passing skills in 2010, throwing for a Nebraska freshman record 1,631 yards and 10 touchdowns, while completing better than 59 percent of his passes. Martinez accounted for 2,596 yards of total offense, the sixth-best mark in school history and tops among Nebraska freshmen.

The play of Martinez was recognized on the conference and national levels. He was chosen as the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year, and was also an honorable-mention all-conference selection. He was also the only freshman among 16 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien Quarterback Award, and was also a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award.

Martinez is back at full strength this spring after an ankle injury suffered in late October hampered him for the final two months of the 2010 season. He did not play quarterback in two games because of the injury and was hobbled in several other contests.

2010 (Redshirt Freshman)

Martinez started 12 of 14 games at quarterback and threatened numerous Nebraska freshman and quarterback records. His play earned Martinez Big 12 Offensive Newcomer-of-the-Year honors, and he was an honorable-mention all-league choice.

Martinez became the first-ever NU freshman to start a season opener at quarterback, and immediately showed his ability against Western Kentucky. He rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries, including a 46-yard TD on his first carry. His 127 yards represented the first 100-yard rushing day by a Husker QB since 2003, and his three TDs were the most by a NU freshman in a season opener. He also passed for 136 yards for 263 yards of total offense.

Martinez had 263 yards of total offense against Idaho, including 157 rushing yards, the highest for an NU freshman since 1996. He added touchdown runs of 67 and 20 yards against the Vandals. Martinez burst onto the national scene at Washington, earning Big 12 and national freshman-of-the-week honors after leading Nebraska to a 56-21 win. He accounted for 287 yards of total offense, the most ever by a Husker rookie QB, completing 7-of-11 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. He also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the third straight game, going for 137 yards and three scores on 19 carries, scoring on runs of 80, 1 and 1 yards. His 80-yard run on the first play of the second half was the longest ever by a Husker freshman.

Martinez totaled 215 yards of total offense against South Dakota State, then made another national statement in a Thursday night win at Kansas State. Martinez guided a Nebraska offense that set a school record by averaging 11.288 yards per play (587 yards on 52 snaps) in a 48-13 win. He was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and the Rivals. com National Freshman of the Week for the second time for his performance.

Martinez broke Nebraska records for total offense by a freshman (369 yards, previous record 294 by Calvin Jones at Kansas in 1991) and rushing yards by a quarterback (241 yards, previous record was 234 by Jammal Lord vs. Texas in 2002) in the win. His 241 rushing yards were the ninth-best total in school history and the most by any Husker since 1991. He also ran for four scores, including another 80-yard touchdown. Martinez completed 5-of-7 passes for 128 yards, including a 79-yard pass to Kyler Reed, the longest pass play by a Husker since 2002 and the ninth-longest pass play in school history.

Martinez made a mark in the record books as a passer at Oklahoma State. In a 51-41 win, he threw for 323 yards and five touchdowns, and became the first player in NU history to pass for 300 yards and rush for 100 in the same game. He was named National Offensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Foundation and Big 12 Freshman of the Week for his effort. His 435 yards of total offense ranked third on the NU single-game chart, and he established career highs in attempts (35), completions (23), passing yards (323) and touchdowns (5), setting Husker freshman marks in all four categories.

Martinez guided Nebraska to 24 first-half points in a 31-17 win over Missouri before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him for the second half. He completed 6-of-9 passes for 115 yards and a 40-yard touchdown to Kyler Reed, helping NU total 256 yards of offense in the opening quarter.

Martinez lined up for one play at receiver in a win at Iowa State, then returned to the lineup at quarterback and accounted for 238 yards of offense in a 20-3 win over Kansas. At Texas A&M, Martinez completed 11-of-17 passes for 107 yards. He also rushed 11 times for 17 yards, but was again sidelined by injury, and did not play against Colorado.

He passed for 143 yards in NUs Big 12 Championship Game loss to Oklahoma, then threw for 53 yards and his 10th touchdown in the Holiday Bowl against Washington.

We all know you have a man-crush on Taylor.

Tell me where did Okie State ranked in total defense at the end of the year, was it 85th or 88th, geez they were so terrible on defense i just cant remember. What about Kstate's run defense was it 110th or 119th. I remind you their are only 120 teams in FBS.

Most of those awards are freakin joke. Come on Big 12 newcomer of the week, how many actual newcomers come in and make an impact on the offensive side of the ball, probably could count on one hand in the Big 12. Yes, taylor played good games, but the defense he played against were absolutely terrible, boarder line laughing stocks. Funny how all those awards came before we started playing against legitmate defenses.

You obviously didnt tune into the texas or SDSU games to find out our extreme predictability on offense.

I'm going to remain a Martinez optimist, I do see that his SOS makes us need to take things with a grain of salt but many other QB's over the years have played bad teams but he is the one who was able to break the records and earn the recognition as a freshman. His pre-injury stats were good enough to make me hope to see what more he can do. All that said if he starts next year and plays like he did when injured I hope that we are willing to bring in the backups and see what they can do. Green was coached with such conservative play calling last year I don't know that he had a fair shot at times.

He passed for 143 yards in NUs Big 12 Championship Game loss to Oklahoma, then threw for 53 yards and his 10th touchdown in the Holiday Bowl against Washington.

Nuff said.

I WILL support whoever is the starting QB is. Im sure Martinez will have the opportunity to take command of this team, which I think he should have had last year....atleast towards the end of the season. He has potential to do great things at Nebraska, he needs to take that opportunity and use it. His attitude/personality got to me last year, at times it seemed he wasnt even tuned in the game. You see alot of QBs talking to their offensive personal, very rarely/if at all did I see that happening. It was mostly staring at the sky, chewing gum.

I agree that Cody Green has never been given a shot at what he can do. At times he just got thrown in their for a couple of series after we are up by a few scores, naturally he looked rattled. Im hoping the coaches have confidence in him enough to hand him the keys if Martinez or whoever gets hurt to pick up where our offense.

2 things...

You wanted Martinez to take command of the team more towards the end of the season? If you're talking about audibles, I guess I understand, but if you're talking in general about his leadership, I think it'd be hard for a kid who leads by example to do so with two bad wheels. You might want to shove aside the injury as if it shouldn't affect his game, but the kid could barely run.

Lastly, Cody Green has gotten more shots than most backup QBs who have played at Nebraska. He's started 4 games in 2 years. I don't know why the fact that he sometimes gets put in during the middle of the game serves as an excuse for not playing well. I mean, how do you accept that while consistently ripping Martinez for his play as an injured freshman. To me, being inexperienced and being injured are legitimate excuses for poor performance - "not being ready to go into the game" is not.

First off you can be a leader while being injured. In games he sat out injured he just stood their, didnt talk to other players or anything. Honestly I think he should be upfront talking with the other Qbs-personel about what is being seen on the field. You see it all the time in college football. When Dan Perza got hurt for NW, everytime his replacement came off the field, their was a conversation/coaching going on. Im not saying every QB has to a coach, but standing on the sidelines lookin like you have better things to do doesnt really reflect well on somebody that supposedly is a leader.

In the 4 games Cody has started the game plan has been extrememly conservative. Yes, we are 4-0 in those games, but the offense was playing not to lose those games rather than win. Yes, I do agree that Cody may have looked more not ready to play than rattled, but the games he has started other than Ou game he looked poised and ready.

Those are your thoughts. Visable, active, supportive. I understand that, but again you are looking at an introvert with Taylor. He was too young, too inexperienced, too sheltered and shoved into a position he was not ready for to be a leader. Once his injuries took over, his one way of leading was taken away from him. He has stated he is not a rah rah type of guy.

Again, I do not think you take into account his youth, his inexperience, his coaching situation, both his and Green's. I am not going to bag on Watson. I think the problem falls around the feet of Bo. He has to be sure his team is prepared, both physically and mentally. He did not. Reasons of course are youth and injuries. But to continually knock on the players is not the answer here. Coaching is to blame for the whole situation. Again both coach and player are young, new to the position. My guess is both will be better this year.

I sometimes wonder if he's got a disorder like Asperger's Syndrome. I don't really know that much about it to know how well the symptoms match. Just wondering if that's an explanation for how he appears.

As someone who works with individuals who have Asperger's Syndrome-No, Taylor doesn't have Asperger's Syndrome. Taylor is a kid. A diamond in the rough. How eloquent are most boys when they're 20 years old and are in the spotlight? He'll get better as he matures. I'm sure he will cringe when he watches this interview say, in 5 years. There will be people who will come along and help him become more polished. I'm more interested in the way he'll play football for us this year. I'm hoping that the rest of the quarterbacks vying for the job will light a bit of a fire beneath him! Could be interesting :)

P.S. If you're interested in what Asperger's Syndrome looks like take a look at Dr. Temple Grandin. Dr Grandin is a famous veterinarian who actually talks about her syndrome. She is a remarkable woman. (Genius! Truly! Many, MANY of the greatest minds of our time had Asperger's Syndrome.)

Ultimately Bo is CEO of this team and made the changes he thought were needed to move forward. Im not trying be negative against Taylor overall, but some on here think this team is just gonna roll through the bigten like an 18 wheeler. All because we have reassigned some offensive coaches on the staff and hired 1 new guy. Well, Im trying to be realistic though about this. I guess Im waiting to see it proven on the field before I make any assumptions on how the season is gonna go. Right now, I dont see how this team is gonna be drastically better than last year as far as offensive production. Yes we will score points, but what will happen when we play Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa..... that reminds to be seen.

As I have stated before huskerscott, I find it unbeleiveable Nebraska's offensive mastermind was already on the staff. I do not see us marching through the B1G by any means. I look for a long season, with many injuries hampering this team. The injury rate and physical ability of this team will be the deciding factor is my guess.

A lot of talk, that we seem to hear every single year. Some of us buy into it, others do not. I bought the sales schpeal the first year of Clownahan, I have not since.

And like you, I just want the best player on the field, be it Martinez or whom ever. I just find it hard to believe that there is a better one on the team at this time. I have never felt Cody was the answer. Martinez is a talent, but it has to be used properly and protected. The kid took a terrible beating last year. We need to hope that the Oline can protect him some this year, and that he is not running for his life or laying in the fetal postion on every other play.

I think there is a lot of work to be done for this team to be anywhere near what the defensive side is. My guess is it will not happen this year. I hope I am wrong.

Right now I dont think their is another QB that can get the job done. But maybe with offense being reworked so to speak it may but everybody back on the same level. If somebody else walks out and takes the first snaps against Chatt. other than Taylor, I have a feelling its gonna be a long season.

The key at QB will almost certainly be depth. Martinez won't play every down, and we need somebody behind him that can step in and run the same offense, not some conservative version of the offense where we have to go to the Wildcat every time we need to run the ball.

However, I do think that some people now believe that since we're in the Big 10, there's no way that Martinez is going to make it through the season without getting seriously hurt, just because they think the Big 10 is much more physical than the Big 12. The Big 10 may play a different style, but injuries come down to luck more than they do how physical teams play. Denard Robinson got dinged up a couple times, but he's a small guy and he had a full, productive season last year in the Big 10 running the football even more than Martinez did in the Big 12.

As far as his leadership skills, Martinez is a lead-by-example guy, not a rah-rah guy. Wanting him to be a rah-rah guy is like wanting him to be a pocket passer - you're asking him to be something he's not. Furthermore, I think the leadership questions that people ask about Martinez is mostly just a byproduct of his performance. If the team had been winning at the end of the year, then nobody cares about Martinez's leadership traits. It's when things went downhill that it became a discussion topic, and it'll be the same next year. Martinez could look great for the first half of the season, and then struggle against a better team or whatever and all of a sudden character/leadership critiques which probably have no relevance to his on-field performance will suddenly become a widespread topic of discussion.

I don't think anybody is going as far as to say he's got Asperger's. He's just more uncomfortable than most in social situations, that's probably the worst of what he must deal with. Not something he can't overcome and it looks to be like he's doing great things to do just that.

Atleast Im picking apart his play on the field and not is his interview qualities. Im not Taylor fan, he is a hell of athlete, great football player, but not at the QB spot.

How many people were dissing him last year during season, when he was throwing incompletion after incompletion, all while the offense couldnt get it rolling on the ground. I believe one poster had a FREE ZAC LEE sig on the bottom. Nobody was blaming the coaching then. Now suddenly everybody is and people seem to think that everything is all better.
