Keys To Beating Iowa

Recommended Posts

They rank right below us in pass defense yes, but they are better against the run so teams have had to throw against them

their weakness is NOT their secondary..if anything it is their depth along the front 7, they have wore down, and they have sustained losses, like we have along their DL.

So which is it? They are better against the run or the weakness is the depth along the front 7?

It's both. We are better against the run giving up about 15 yards fewer per game and 3.8ypc to your 4.1. We are fairly solid run D and play a gap control scheme pretty well. That said we have been unable to generate a consistent pass rush with our front four which has left our secondary and LB's hanging in coverage for 5+ seconds far too often. That's resulted in a pretty poor statistical pass defense despite the fact our secondary probably our most talented unit with 3 guys that have realistic chances of moving on the NFL when they are done with college.

I'm not buying that, Nebraska has fewer sacks on the season than Iowa but yet they are allowing opponents to complete only 53% of passes.

I don't know what to tell you other than I speak the truth. Bear in mind our opposing completion % allowed is always going to be up there. We allow a lot of underneath stuff to avoid giving up big plays. We try to balance that by getting pressure with the front four and using solid positioning from the back seven to capitalize on the opposing QB's mistakes by getting picks. It's been that way for the last 12 years. It drives lot's of Iowa fans nuts but it's hard to argue it hasn't been effective over the years.

Our defense certainly hasn't played up to our historic standards that's for sure.

It will be interesting to see who wins the battle between a QB not known for his accuracy and a defense not known for stopping passing attacks.

As I said in another thread, on many levels this game has devolved into the battle of who sucks least.
