Where's the pressure?

Recommended Posts

Most of the fronts, even in the "4-3" really turn into odd fronts anyway, you see more 5 man fronts during the game then you do straight 4 man fronts. The 3-4 is your old 5-2 and almost no team plays a straight 3-4. 3-4 teams always (yes, I know, not always) walk a linebacker or two up and up playing a 5 man front anyway.

The difference is not so much the 3-4 and 4-3 and so on, it is the versatility of the people playing in it.

That's true only to a degree. There are definitely differences in the personnel required to run a 3-4 versus a 4-3. The biggest difference is on the DL. In a 4-3 you can have DEs that weigh 240 or so and DTs around 285. In a 3-4 DEs are generally 275+ and NTs are 330. Now those are 3-4 NFL ideals, but in terms of personnel, the is quite a difference between a DL in a 3-4 versus a 4-3. ILBs are more similar in a 3-4 and 4-3 than they are different. However, OLBs in a 4-3 are typically smaller than they are in a 3-4.

Yep, that is what I said. It is the versatility of the players in each scheme that are different. In the end, most of the time, you end up with a 5 man front though.

Body type of players is not versatility...

Kinda depends on the player. Kinda really depends on the player. In fact, it totally depends on the player and his ability.

There are 275 pound guys that are versatile, they can play on the line with a hand down, they can drop in coverage, they can play outside leverage on runs. There are 275 pound guys that can only play with a hand down. Players give you versatility more often then scheme.

Wish we could contain mobile QBs. Stuff like this cannot happen:

That's especially annoying considering that our genius plan is containment.

if everything went perfect all the time, teams would never score on us. Im sure they set this up through other plays, sh#t happens, its football. Taylor was just as open when he scored against Ohio State, should they change their "genius" system?

Whos the LB on the top out of position anyway? Where is David? Looks like all the LBers got sucked in and caught up at the LOS.

It might have been a different era, but the best NT at NU was 6'1" and 240#. But he was quick and fast - he ran around the back side of the OU center and still tackled the QB for a loss from behind on an option.

You might be talking about a way different area. There isn't a NT in the 4-3. Maybe from the 5-2 days where a 5-man defensive front, I imagine, lessens the size requirement considerably compared to a 3-man line.

This would be a good argument if Nebraska had a good defense last year against running QBs. It's not like we're pointing out a rarity here. Nebraska played horrible against every mobile quarterback they faced (Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Northwestern). Obviously there is something wrong with the system when facing mobile quarterbacks.
