So, if were goint to 16, who are the next two? Why not Clemson? What team can we add that will might intice ND?

Wife is a Clemson grad so I follow them as well. They travel very well, I still want revenge for '81 and I can actually drive to there in about 3 hrs. Win in my book, plus gets us into the south for recruiting.

I typically enjoy Silver's statistical analyses, but he is off the mark here. The B1G may not stand to gain much from absorbing the Rutgers and Maryland fan bases, but I don't think that was the point. Rutgers and Maryland may not turn on a lot of TV sets, but Ohio State, Nebraska, Penn State and Michigan do. This move gets them into those markets on a regular basis, and, in the long term, it will likely increase fan interest in those areas. The opportunity for the B1G to showcase it's biggest brands in new markets is more important than the fanbases associated with the new schools.

One of the first, perhaps THE FIRST, pre-requisite of B1G membership is AAU membership. Granted NU lost their AAU membership after-the-fact, but with that in mind, B1G presidents are not going to sacrifice that rule for non-AAU schools with good football tradition. Notre Dame is likely the lone non-AAU exception to this rule, due to their prestigious academic standing.

While I understand the draw of the Virginia Techs, Oklahomas and Clemsons of the world, they're NOT AAU members. Hence, will likely never be considered for B1G membership.

So here are your options. These are current AAU members.

Oklahoma would get membership if they dropped T Boone University. Seems like they are in a stable situation so they probably aren't interested anyway.

Notre Dame isn't a AAU member so It's not everything. It's just a huge part.

Judging by a quote from Harvey Perlman, he said the B1G would not have accepted NU had they not been AAU members. NU was expelled from the AAU 9 months after the ink had dried on the conference transition papers.

With Notre Dame, I recall reading somewhere that they had no interest in the CIC because some of the research within that organization is against their Catholic beliefs. So the CIC wasn't something they saw as beneficial to them. Yet the B1G still covets them due to their academic standing, otherwise.

and here is the problem, the only schools on that list that excite me are UT, A&M, and Florida. A Ga Tech and UNC addition wouldn't do enough for me.

AAU membership isn't a requirement for a B1G invite--otherwise, we wouldn't have gotten a sniff, as the B1G was well aware the AAU was moving towards making an example of us before we started discussions. It also disqualifies Notre Dame, as stated above, that are viable B1G candidates for expansion.

Don't put too much stock into the AAU thing.

Where are you hearing Kansas? That seems like an odd pairing for UNC - if UNC was seriously in play I would think it would pull either UVA or Georgia Tech

Kansas is a very likely target--they've had discussions with the Big East about jumping out of the Big XII when it was on its deathbed, and they're not tethered to Kansas State. Plus, you're running out of football targets...and frankly, Kansas has been to a BCS bowl more recently than some of the other potential expansion targets mentioned.

And Delaney would at least get to soak Kansas City and St. Louis for carrier fees for the BTN, which helps some. I mean, it's not like people in Missouri care about Missouri football, or they wouldn't have joined the SEC. :)

Agreed. If Oklahoma could ditch Okie Lite, they would have an invite (probably along with Kansas).

But between T. Boones Farms Pickens having the state legislature bought and paid for in Oklahoma, and Oklahoma's AD publicly saying they're hitching their Schooner to Bevo, it isn't going to happen.

A shame, because they would fit right in, IMO.
