Is it me or is Michigan pissed??

The fact that Iowa got thte better bid has to piss UM off big time...

On the other hand, Michigan fans have apparently brought this on themselves..

For being a football mainstay, the Outback made no secret that they selected Iowa because Michigan fans haven't traveled well..... $$$$$$$$$, all about $$$$$$

Outback Bowl officials announced the 20th Anniversary game is an official sellout

less than 24 hours after announcing its match-up. The bowl extended invitations Sunday

to the University of Iowa and the University of Florida to play in this years game.

Both schools are distributing their allotment of tickets to their season ticket holders,

boosters and students and have indicated they will use all of their tickets. The bowl

will be played January 2, at 11:00AM and be televised on ESPN TV.

I find that teams from areas with no other sports interest in the area seem to travel better than teams in metro areas of other teams (I.E. NBA, NFL, MLB, etc...) and furthermore, it looks like it's tied to the amount of "alternative entertainment" in general available for people.

USC is ridiculously good, but it looks like they never sellout- and this year's Rose Bowl won't exactly measure how well they "travel." But in Los Angeles, USC is hardly the only thing going on in the city to draw people in.

Iowa travels well, but in the state there's really nothing else going on (all due respect to the 'Clones and Northern Iowa Panthers-- who incidently are in the NCAA 1-AA Title game) I used to date a girl from Ames, and outside of a pretty cool haunted forest at Halloween, my Iowa experience was anything but action packed.

I have long considered the complacency of some Michigan fans and I really can't come up with much as to why it is how it is. Maybe the fan population is diluted due to interest in other local sports (Red Wings, Pistons, Lions(err.. I doubt it's because of them :))

It's a no-brainer for Nebraska, the closest competition Husker football has regionally is Creighton basketball, UNO Hockey, and Husker volleyball(say what?!) When I am home (Grand Rapids, MI) you see a lot of Michigan stuff... but there's sects for Michigan State boosters, Red Wing fanatics, and Piston freaks (Deeetrrroitt Baasskketball -- sorry, couldn't help myself), and even small contingencies for the lesser 1-A schools (Eastern, Western, Central, Detroit, and Oakland) . In Michigan we have a big draw because of our location admist the great lakes-- so there's a lot of involvement with that. Here in Omaha, you have your choice between red and red... and then there's always red. And outside of watching the Huskers, your next best option is the now Nate Funk-less Bluejays, the UNO hockey team (incidently Michigan will be playing UNO at the Civic in February- GO BLUE!), and whatever else the Qwest Center can offer us. So basically there's no other big ticket. So everyone is all 'Go Huskers.' And there's nothing wrong with that.

Big-time collegiate sports programs that come from metros that are otherwise athletically starved always draw: see Nebraska, Iowa, Tennessee, Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn amongst others... I'm sure you could name plenty I haven't listed...

Look at some of the powers like USC, Miami, and Florida-- none of these have historically traveled well-- but crap, look where they're located. If you didn't have college football in those places, you'd be A-okay. If you didn't have college football here in Nebraska, I'm at a loss to figure out what would be going on here.

So that was a pretty nonsensical ramble, but hopefully there's some nuggets of validity hidden in there. What does everyone else think?

creighton-----since there is so little to do in Nebraska then you must be traveling with "your team" right? going go to san antonio and be yelling "go blue" are you? are you going to be shelling out that hard earned cash to drive 14 hrs to the Alamo bowl instead of staying in omaha to support "your" team instead of driving the 12-14 hrs to ann arbor or were ever you are from.

you are probably a fan just like the fans from cali, fl, or tx......you are a fan of what ever team is winning.

quit talking smack, break out mommy and daddy's credit card and go to the game and support your team instead of all of the excuses that you give for not traveling well.

You know, I think it's okay to talk about the issues- but you're talking about me now instead of the issue.

I think you've got a bias against Creighton since I see you brought up "daddy's credit cards." I'm a graduate student up to my ears in loans, so you can take your uninformed jerk comment and put it you know where. What's your beef with Creighton?

In other news, you totally overreacted to my post. There's more to do in lots of other places than Nebraska- big news. Where do you suppose Nebraska ranks on lists of vacation destinations? Hello, there's less going on here- that's common sense. I think that is something that really brings Nebraskans together on the Huskers because it's "the big ticket" in the state. That makes sense. If you don't think so, then give me an informed reason why like the guy who said something after you-- don't go and try to throw it on "what kind of person I am." That just makes you look bad.

Ohio fields two major cities with alot of professional sports teams. Texas travels very well and they have four major cities an alot of sports teams. No dice.

Texas is a big-a** state. The only city even close to them in San Antonio, so you can throw out anything in Houston and Dallas, because then we may as well include Kansas City in the Omaha/Lincoln region. I'm skeptical about that one. Besides, Texas is sort of an abhorration due to the fact that since they are born, they are fed that Texas pride thing. What other state flies their state flag as high as the national one? (They do at the state capitol in Austin...) Plus, football is the state religion.. anyone see Varsity Blues? Friday Night Lights?

But that is the point. That is the reason that we sink so much of our money and pride into our football team, as compared to a state like Utah, who has one professional team, more people, and a successful football program. I am not saying that Michigan doesnt have more to do than nebraska, trust me, im from chicago, if anyone can identify with the lack of things to do compared to my home state, its me. I am saying that any state, including Texas, or Ohio, or Nebraska, can create a culture that resides in state pride. Im from Illinois, we dont have state pride, we have city pride, but not state pride, which is why, even in Illinois miraculusly won the national title, you can bet your butt that we wouldnt fill the stadium for the alamo bowl the next year. Nebraska doesnt have bandwagon fans, or very few of them. Teams like Notre Dame, Michigan, the Yankees, they have bandwagon fans. To us, Nebraska football is our life, to many Michigan fans, its a conversation dropper.

Let's see Detroit the cultural center of CRIME. Probably in the top 10 in that division. Probably in the pollution top 10 also. Makes me want to vacation there. Pistons, tigers and lions oh my. Why do people think the world revolves around pro sports? Along with over inflated salaries and ticket prices. Sorry I'd rather buy Amway.

Nebraska only has clean air, low crime, great outdoor recreation. And the state has a GREAT team win or lose. :cheers

First of all i have nothing against Creighton University. It happens to be one of the more respected medical schools in the country.

Next, do you think that you are telling me something that I dont know about Nebraska, not having alot of things to do? No kidding I never knew that Michagan had more things to do.

Now I didnt mean to hurt your feelings with the "mommy and daddy's credit card" line, I was trying to make a point. The point that I was trying to make is this....try to follow along....I will go slow so you can keep up......Since Nebraska has so little to do, and you are such a great fan of UM, and the drive to San Antonio from Omaha is only about 14 hrs (I know it is only 10 hrs to Grand Rapids, but what the hell it is your favorite team right). Are you going to spend the money plus a little more (8 hours) round trip to go and cheer on "your" team? Do you love your team enough to make a sacrifice and go?

Look you are in Omaha right now, not in Michagan, and you dont have tickets to a Pistons or Redwings game. So are you going to travel with your team or what will the next excuse be?

My next excuse is Christmas in Oregon with my mother's family. SOME things in life actually are MORE important than college football. You can debate that if you want, but you'll be the one who looks like a Scrooge  BUT in all fairness to me, I did manage to go to 2 road games this year (Northwestern and Iowa) and one home (Penn State). So if you think I don't get out to the games, then you're picking on the wrong Wolverine fan. I generally do get to about 3 a year, depending on where the road games are and when I have a little break to be home on a weekend where they are at home. I personally don't think that's too bad for a fan who's out of the "geographic loop" these days.

How many road games did you make it to for Nebraska? I drove to all of the road games and had to fly home to go with my family to the PSU game.

Thanks for explaining to me how far away from home I am though, I'm glad to see that you are proficient in the use of mapquest when needed.

I hope you enjoy the trip to San Antonio though. Make sure you check out the Tower of the America restaurant and the riverwalk after the game-- ya know, to get your mind off the spanking Michigan will have given the Huskers ;)

I dont want you to think that I am a scrooge, spending christmas with family would be a reason that i would consider NOT an excuse since i live away from nebraska and i was deployed to kuwait last year.

3 games a year is good for someone that lives away from the area, and actually 3 home games a year for someone that does not have season tickets for schools that sell out every game is excellent in my book.

being in the Army stationed in Colorado I was only able to make 1 home game. (9 hr drive) my schedule does not allow me to travel that often. I could have gone to the NU/CU game, in fact I was given 1 of 50 tickets that were given out to recognize soldiers and thank them for thier service, but I chose to spend the holiday weekend with my family back in Nebraska since I was in Kuwait last year and my brother was leaving to go to Iraq on the sunday following Thanksgiving.

This year I am scheduled to work 24 hr shifts through christmas and new years, BUT if i can find some one to replace me on the 27th and the 29th I will drive to the game.

I hope you enjoy the holidays and look forward to your comments after the game, especially after NU shocks the Michagan world.

no offense was intended on any of the previos posts, just some friendly jabs at the opposing fans.

Common sense has to play a part here. Nobody is doubting Nebraska's loyalty to the team, but when you're in a state that has pretty much nothing for the national sports scene except Husker football, then obviously there's a large loyal fan base.

As for Michigan, there is more alumni from there in this country (spread around well, too) than any other school. Michigan travels well, but for a bowl game like the Alamo, which in most of our opinions is less than stellar, it's probably not going to get the juices flowing.

In Michigan we have TWO Big Ten teams. You can easily say it's split about 50/50 for State vs. UM. On top of that you have 4 major professional sports teams which take away interest (Lions...fire Millen) and we still fill the Big House against even lowly MAC teams to the tune of 110,000+. So really, this argument is moot to either side. Both universities have great support for their football teams and we'll let it be settled on the field in a few weeks. Poor Huskers can all travel 14 hours back to Omaha with a tear in their eye.

even if we lose, but play well, we will hold our heads up high.....as our program is headed back up, where we are used to being and where Michigan would like to be too.......it should be a good game, and both programs have and will continue to have a stong following and garner alot of respect.......no need to badger each other, just enjoy the game..........you guys had a tough schedule this year and probably are the best 7-4 team out there right now........good luck
