Defense of Bo

OK, I have been a lurker on this forum for a while but never created an account or posted before until now. I really think people are way off base in wanting to cut Bo loose…Shame on you. I remember a few years back when he was hired Husker nation was over the moon with excitement because this was OUR GUY…no doubt about it. Heck, Bo was appointed and endorsed by TOM himself, what else could we ask for?

Am I happy with how the last few seasons have gone? Absolutely not. Am I OK with Bo making an ass out of himself in the media and shooting his mouth off making the university and the team look bad? Heck no. BUT, I Know this is the same guy that put together one of the best defensive units this program has seen since the 90s and I think he can do it again IF…IF he has the support he had when he was first appointed head coach and some competent coordinators and position coaches. Sprinkle in some recruiting and we could ball with anyone…I really believe that.

Put this season in perspective a bit. Lets say you take the best football team in the country…which is of course Alabama. Now, take away 7 of the 8 best OL player on the team, then remove the best QB on the team, then take away a clutch, speedy receiver on the first team….OK were not quite done yet; add in a MASH unit of FRESHMAN defensive players….(seriously, these guys are freshman people! Guys that just got their first big boy hairs a few years ago and were at senior prom a year ago. What THE F DO YOU EXPECT!) I for one think its is REMARKABLE we made it 8 wins…absolutely incredible. Take all that away from Bama, then turn every media troll in the state on Saban every freakin day…what do you think is gonna happen? NO TEAM CAN OVERCOME THOSE KINDS OF INJURIES AND PRESSURS AND EXPECT TO BE SUCCESFULL…NOT ONE!

Bo has been backend into a corner all season and now we are surprised when he snaps and goes off on some reporter, a ref and the fans…. Really? I am pretty amazed he was able to hold his tongue this long, I wouldn’t have been able to. The same reason everyone loved him as a coach for his passionate enthusiasm is the same reason people are hating on him. . I cant even imagine why he would want to stay here anyway…everyone hates his guts it would seem. Why would anyone want to come here, coach or player? If your thinking its because of the reputation and tradition we had in the 70s-the 90s, think again…no one cares about that but US, Hell, none of the player were even alive during the Huskers hay days. I love the HUSKERS and will cheer for them rain or shine, win or lose, but damn…sometimes I think our fans have unrealistic expectations and are really impatient. It took Tom about 3 decades to win a championship…3 decades. If Tom were to be reincarnated and made Nebraska head ball coach he would be run out of town by the whinny fans and media after a few years. Right now, Nebraska football is a joke…that’s right, a joke to other people. Bo is trying to rebuild a program that was in the toilet and everyone is ready to FIRE him because he hasn’t made the team in to the 1994 Cornhuskers already. Its just crazy. People are impeding the exact same process they are desperate to improve.

Who else you gonna get? If someone says “scott frost” or “Lane Kiffin” I would smack there face…that’s ridiculous. They are either unproven or proven losers respectively. Maybe as Coordinators or recruiters those guys would work out but not as the HC. The only guys in my mind that would appease Husker nation immediately are locked up in long term deals that the university is defiantly not willing to reach that deep in their pockets to procure (Saban or Meyer) Even if they did “show them the money” its likely only a pipe dream. Otherwise the only thing we are going to get is more 8 or 9 win seasons only with a different guy as head coach.

Eichorst already says Bo is back, so even if you don’t agree with him or like him, quit being a baby and support our HC. HE might just surprise you if given a few new staff members, some experienced players and maybe a PR guy for good measure!

I will also add that as painful as this season was, the amount of experience our young guys got this year will pay off in SPADES NEXT year…you cant simulate in game experience in practice and I think that’s not something that should be over looked.

GBR!, sorry for the long post.

When "my guys" tell me to f--k off and kiss their a-- as i'm paying a donation fee of $8K/year on top of ticket price, I have to wonder if this is really the guy I want to be supporting.

When "my guy" applies for every job that comes open, can't get them, so comes back and pretends that he is "all in" on our program, I wonder if that is the guy I should be supporting.

When "my guy" loses yet another game by 20+ points to an average opponent, then burns it down in the post game saying he doesn't care if he's fired, i wonder how stable the guy I'm supposed to be supporting is.

Everyone is excited right when a guy is hired. But there was very little available data to go on. People were excited because Callahan was gone. Now that we have 6 years of data, we don't have to sit here and pretend everything is rosy for the sake of being a big fan.

Who's fault is it that our defense started off the year with so many freshmen? I believe that is on Bo since he wasn't able to bring in recruits early on that could start. Also I'm tired of hearing how it's the fan's or the media's fault, if you want to coach somewhere where you won't face pressure from the fans then go to the Sun Belt or the MAC. Nebraska is a prestigious program, you can't handle the pressure then get out. I don't care how many posters here think they would've taken a swipe at a ref too or lashed out at a reporter. You are not paid millions of dollars to handle the pressure, Bo is. Now to conclude, the anger among the posters here is not from Bo only winning 8 games. It's his attitude towards the program. Do you really feel Bo cares about Nebraska? I certainly don't think he does, he wanted the administration to fire him so he could collect his 7 million dollars. Bo has had enough with this program, you can tell from his body language. And frankly I've had enough with him.

Slow clap.

Personally, I don't even care if he "cares" about Nebraska. I want him to ACT like he cares about it. What recruit with OPTIONS would come to Nebraska in their right mind after this behavior. Can you talk about making someone a better man to their parents when you act like this all the time?

Pelini does run a clean program. But jesus christ, at what a cost.

Well stated Power-I. I think most on here that would like Bo to leave gave him ample time to recruit his players, add his own staff, and put his stamp on the program. We are now in year 6, and he's had more than enough time to get this program heading in a positive direction, not backwards. Each person favoring a change in the coaching staff likely had a turning point that made them feel new coaching blood was needed. For me that was last year's Big 10 championship game when I watched in person the complete collapse on the field.

Agreed, lack of depth and Freshman across the board is a direct result of recruiting or lack thereof. BUT injuries are NOT the HC fault….that is unless of course the coaching staff is intentionally injuring players. People talk about strength and conditioning, hell the last time I checked you cannot strengthen a knee ligament or an ankle bone which it seems a lot of our guys had these types of injuries.

OK, so Bo and staff don’t recruit well, this isn’t earth shattering news…how do we fix that…Hmmmm bring in a few new coordinators and position coaches that are also good recruiters. Done……next.

If I was hired for a job and having a rough go and all I heard was “you suck” “you are a failure” “you should be fired” I…and you would get sick of it after a while and fire back…don’t lie, you would too.

This deal isn’t ALL the fans and media’s fault, but fans and media don’t make the situation any better either. If your not a part of the solution you are part of the problem. Bo is basically in a situation where he will probably never succeed because everyone hates his guts. No fan support + no media support=inevitable failure.

Bo does have an abrasive personality, but to say he doesn’t care about Nebraska would be a bit of a stretch. Who in their right mind would stay somewhere they weren’t wanted if they didn’t care about what they were doing? So, that statement doesn’t make sense if you bring that thought to a logical conclusion.

Like I said before; new coordinators/position coaches + fan and media support + recruits + healthy players will equal success.

Don’t freak out people, its really not as bad as it may appear. I hate loosing they way we have, but If the program was completely gutted now, any progress would be erased. We are still trying to recover from gutting the program after coach Solach…why regress and start all over again?

I really think our injury problem has been wildly exaggerated. Two key players went down this year. Two. Martinez and Long.

If the success of your football team is almost entirely dependent on one guy's ability to run really fast, the problems run much deeper than "aw we just got unlucky".

Glad you said it.

I also have ZERO faith in Chancellor Pearlman and Eichorst (who is still somewhat of a mystery man to me) to go out and land a top notch coach and staff who may or may not even be available or interested. By Firing Bo that’s what we are doing…putting trust in those guys to get someone better…..I don’t see it. After Tom stepped down I think a lot of people around the country see Nebraska as not having much credibility of Clout as we use to with TO in house. Just an observation.
