Your Scout Report on Georgia Bulldogs

Hutson Mason QB held a few state passing records in Georgia but wasn't highly recruited because his offense at Lassiter High School was a HUNH and UGA only offered him at the last minute. There were questions about his long ball.

At UGA, he's always been the guy in the headset between Murray and the booth. He is a 5th year senior who knows the offense inside and out. He's been the official backup the whole time he's been here, and repping with the first team at every practice. He's had some cleanup duty in garbage time over the years, but just got his first start in the last game of the season vs instate rival Georgia Tech (Murray tore ACL the week before).

Down 20-0, he led the Dawgs back into the game to win in 2nd overtime.

The difference between Mason and Murray is that Mason plays faster. Murray had the maturity and experience to let the plays develop, checking the long ball first before checking through the rest of the routes and reading the coverage. Murray was also an effective scrambler. Mason likes to get rid of the ball in a hurry. He wants to dink and dunk you all the way down the field. An offensive lineman told the newspaper recently they always have to tell him to slow down in practice because he's now now now. One of his weaknesses is the play-action run. As soon as he hands the ball off and takes two steps, he stops to turn around and watch the play and doesn't follow through with the fake. I assure you they are working on that in the film room because it defeats the whole purpose of the play action run. His critics say he doesn't have the long ball, but he through for several long completions in that game. One game doesn't make or break a quarterback, so only time will tell if he'll be successful against Nebraska, and looking forward to next year, the SEC.

Georgia's defense is a base 3-4 but plays in nickel most of the time. We only returned 3 starters from last year's defense. Garrison Smith (DE), Amarlo Herrera (ILB), Damien Swann (DB).

The two players you'll see most on the defensive line are Garrison Smith and Ray Drew. They all rotate but Smith and Drew are almost always in there. The difference is new DL coach Chris Wilson (former Miss St DC). Instead of trying to put together a defensive line based on prototypes, he put the 3 most disruptive guys up on the line as the starters. Garrison Smith is barely 300 but is the nose guard in a 3-4 in the SEC, if that gives you any indication of the new DL philosophy. It's been working. The whole front 7 of the defense are great. UGA is in the top 5 in the sec in sacks, hurries, rush yards against, and pass yards against (no thanks to our secondary, but I don't want to get ahead of myself).

Georgia's linebackers are all stout. Ramik Wilson (ILB) leads the SEC in tackles and was named 1st team All SEC this week. Leonard Floyd (OLB, true freshman) was named to the SEC All Freshman team and leads the team in sacks. Jordan Jenkins (OLB) was the 5 star recruit from 2 years ago that was supposed to replace Jarvis Jones, but you don't simply replace Jarvis Jones. Jordan Jenkins has played well at weak side OLB although the stats don't show it. Unlike most weak side ends who go after the qb on every play, JJ actually contains his edge.

Georgia's secondary is a dumpster fire. That's all I have to say about that.

Here's a pic of Leonard Floyd and Zach Mettenberger being introduced to each other.

Interesting (to me) side note about the above picture with Floyd over the LSU QB, the guy wearing #47 is Ray Drew, "The Paster of Disaster".... super turbo Christian kid, was a 5 star recruit 3 years ago and refers to himself as a "crock-pot" player, sitting on the bench for years getting better and better with time, just now starting... and is also a huge country music fan and doesn't listen to rap.... plays acoustic guitar.

Another personal side note.... receiver Chris Conley in the one handed catch gig in post #1 is a geek... organized a Star Wars student movie viewing last week on campus... and at the risk of sounding racist, speaks very well.... makes James Earl Jones sound like James Brown. Future broadcaster for sure.... http://www.georgiado.../100113aab.html

AND .....he eats squirrel.

From an outsider looking in perspective on the UGA team, they're just another 8-4 team. Their tied in record with Vanderbilt, but Vandy won the head to head matchup b/w the two. Their defense is hot garbage. Their DC has been in a decline for the 3rd straight year and doesn't have the personnel to run a great 3-4 defense this season. Their pass defense is the weakest part of their team.

Their starting QB is out for the season so they are brining in a guy who started against Ga Tech (7-5). He went 22-36 against them for under 300 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT, a 57.6 QBR, and less than a 1 yard per carry rushing avg. He's all kinds of meh.

Then they have a RB who could get hurt at any moment, like he's done all season and miss game time. When the guy is on, he's on, but his toughness is a big question mark. They have some backups at RB that can play.

There are 2 WR's, Conley and Bennett, but I never know if they're playing or not, b/c their busted up every other game it seems, and does it really matter, b/c Aaron Murray isn't throwing to them?

The TE Lynch is good, but the 5 Star recruit Jay Rome has been a non-factor for most of his career at UGA.

They have a good kicker though.

However, their coaching overall is below avg. If you look at their recruiting classes the past 8 years, (usually Top 10) you really gotta wonder why it's so rare that they actually end up ranked in the Top10 end of season rankings.

hey cockinear....41-30....and you will always be Carolina, and even after a few halfway decent years with SOS, Carolina is still down in the series 47-17....ahh!! Cola East!! the screen door to hell.

after the #7, Conner, and the OBC is gone, then it's back to 3-9 and some normalcy for the c$%ks.

But Conner Shaw has been a freakin stud for y'all for sure. Personally, I think if y'all ain't got Shaw, the c$%ks are barely over .500....he was as tough a QB as anyone will ever see.....Georgia boy IIRC, from Gwinett county(?)

Same thing was said about Garcia, same thing was said about Latt, about Jeffrey and so on and so on. It's old hat. The only point you may be right on is tOBC but the rest is bunk. Lumping everything on Shaw's shoulders is a cop out, he's a great player and a fighter for sure but to say that it's all him is a joke, he, on his own, only won one game this year and that was Mizzou. Show me five extra games USC would have lost had Shaw not played.

People seem to forget that Dylan Thompson has beat Clemson, he's beat Michigan and he's been in the system for three years...or that Davis is already on track to have a stronger career at USC than Lattimore did.

Georgia fans just like talking smack without any perspective which is fine. I can say confidently that you'll never win the SEC with Richt and that's a far worse issue considering the talent UGA has at its disposal. How many QBs with Georgia connections are going to win big at other schools? Just in the past five years we've had Mett, Marshall, Cam and Shaw. BTW, Shaw is from Hall County and Davis is from Lithonia. Neither seriously considered Georgia, it was a battle between UF and USC for both...right in the shadow of Athens...ouch.

You'll see him in the backfield, and you'll think "Oh, they've got a white half-back in the backfield, he must be a good blocker, this is going to be a pass play".

This is funny, because it seems he expects us to overlook a running back because he is white. Kinda how they overlooked our white running back of the past 4 years, which promptly gained 150 yards and made your all world defense of last year rather silly at times.

HMMM....lemme see.....???? South Carolina SECCG appearances since-FOREVER.... 1....and they are 0-1...UGA SECCG appearances since 02'...5 with a 2-5 record. I can say confidently that South Carolina has never won the SEC at all, while UGA has been five times and won twice.... I'm not sure South Carolina could get to Atlanta with a map, flashlight, GPS and a homing pigeon.

Connor Shaw offers from GA...0....we already had Zach Mettenberger and Aaron Murray, so we did not really need him...we signed Christian Lemay that year (bust)

Yep, offered Mike Davis, but he may have seen Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley crowding him some, because everybody in the south knew we needed RB's (all we had was a fairly quick thug with no character) and they were both the kind of character athletes that were going to play/start early....

I CAN SAY CONFIDENTLY that South Carlolina lost to UGA 41-30.

Yup he did do that, and he was/is a stud for sure. I'd love to have had him at UGA!....but you are forgetting one minor detail....we promptly hung 45 on your azz.

look, I don't like talking trash. period. I don't as a rule, but don't pick on me for no reason. I'm just here to have a good time and talk some football. the thing to remember, is your team is only as good as their last game....and my teams last game with the Gamecocks, didn't turn out too good for them ( historically they are on the losing end anyway) and the last game with Nebraska did not end too good for NU either....and it you happen to be a Wisky fan...YOU'RE 0-2....with the Great Dayne losing one of those...and oh yeah...he was sure fun to watch. what did he have in college? something like 50,000 yards? ...*googles Ron Dayne* NCAA Record* 7125 yards. wow.

I'm just looking forward to some old fashioned smash mouth fooseball with the Huskers again this year. I ahave always liked the Huskers, and loved Osborne!! I always likened Richt to him some because Richt kind of has that cool sideline demeanor.

Please show me where I denied the fact that our defense played like a group of preschoolers or that you guys didn't score at will. I'm not trying to argue with you, don't put words in my mouth.

But the fact that you guys nearly learned your lesson last year in regards to overlooking us makes it absolutely comical that you're doing it again this year. I'm not saying we are going to win by any means, but you guys better not wait til the 4th quarter to strap it up this year.
