2014 NFL Free Agency

Pats land Revis.

1 year, 12 mil.

Sounds like this is actually a 2-year deal, but the Patriots have to exercise an option or Revis will be an unrestricted free agent next year.

year 1

cap: $2M salary + $5M bonus = $7M cap charge.

cash value: $2M salary + $10M bonus = $12M cash.

year 2

cap: $20M+$5M bonus = $25M cap charge.

cash value: $20M salary = $20M cash.

In other words, the $10M bonus is spread out over 2 years regardless. This makes Revis only cost $7M in cap space this year, which is paltry. The Patriots had $19M before this move; this would seem to put them at $12M. On the other hand, it seems there is no way in hell the Patriots will exercise the option for 2015, so Revis is almost certain to a) be an unrestricted free agent next offseason and b) still cost $5M against the Patriots' 2015 cap number.

Interesting. Definitely more desperate than it first appeared. The Pats must have really needed the extra $5M of room this year.

Raiders apparently having a messy offseason. After all that sacrifice to get into good cap standing, they let their best tackle walk in free agency, paid more to bring in a lesser outside tackle, then voided that guy's contract when he couldn't pass a physical (he's since signed back with his original team).

Broncos reported to have offered Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie 6 years, $54M and for some reason he turned that down.

I'm thinking it is time to get rid McKenzie. Some of the dumbest managerial decisions I've seen a while.
