They have had to build coalitions from both sides. They also have to be effective administrators. While I agree that some Senators may be more in tune to some national/international issues, typically governors are more in tune to the affects of govt on local populations and the needs of the local populations - main street. 2 of our best/effective presidents of the last century, FDR and Reagan were both governors and they came from different political persuasions. However, a Governor at least has had experience at the executive level. He/She knows what it is like to be THE person at the top. If you have never been there before, there is an adjustment period. Now, I said Governor only if everything else was equal. In reality, that will never happen. I have never voted for someone because they were a Governor over someone who was a Senator for only that reason. Link to comment
