One of these is a real term; the others are attempts to obfuscate the issue. It's not an obscure term and I'd encourage people who haven't even encountered it before to expand their reading so that they do.

So....a man can condescendingly explain things to women because they believe a woman wouldn't understand.....but.....a woman can't do the same thing to men?

Sooooo....if a term is formed for something bad men do, it's a good intellectual view of how men treat women.

 

If a term is formed for something bad women do....all you're doing is "obfuscating" the issue.

BRB, a big element of the legitimacy of this being a thing is the social/power dynamics at play.

 

Men and women aren't on equal footing in our society. They're the closest they ever have been, but women still have a rough go of things, and are thought of as, mostly subconsciously, being inferior. Of course women can condescendingly explain things to men, but the act of doing that isn't the entire focus of the idea behind 'mansplaining'

Just because someone has a term for something, it doesn't mean they are diminishing the other side.

Example.  Reality is, there are abusive women in relationships.  So.....if I start talking about men who are abused by women, should I not do that because it diminishes the problem of men abusing women?

If you're legitimately talking about men who are abused by women as something you're concerned about or care about, you should do that and 99% of people would be entirely fine with that.

 

If someone else is talking about men abusing women and your response is along the lines of, "Well yeah but you know there are bad women too", people will think you're an a-hole and get upset.

The original post started the discussion talking about both "mansplaining" and "womansplaining".  She didn't jump in the middle of a discussion about Mansplaining and say....."well....what about....."

And it's no problem and there's been zero pushback of "you can't say that!" reactions.
