No Program Identity

Right now I think that we have an identity of a program that "once was" a number of things that we were and it doesn't translate into a mindset that we need to have now. Tradition, accomplishments, what we were known for, etc. In a way, it's a hindrance.

These are hard times where we need to reestablish ourselves. It's a story that doesn't match with a different time.

We can't just say, we're going to be respected, we've got a history and somehow that makes us relevant. We have to make history again in anew, with it's own unique characteristics that grows out of our own accomplishments in this point in time through having a cause all our own. In THIS moment.

The next guy that comes onboard needs to convey that this is going to be hard, it's going to be challenging. And then do everything he can to help his players be the very best that they can be on a continuum. The identity evolves out of that.

It starts with having control over what we can. Playing disciplined with a minimum of errors. Not beating ourselves. Being accountable to each other and really caring for each other genuinely interested. With this comes the necessity of having a fighter's mind knowing that you'll get knocked around and not letting it being a deterrent. An underdog's mentality. Infinite determination. Keep coming back when hit and improving on achievements over and over again absent an end.

A really good identity isn't easy to define. It's numerous drops of characteristics combined together creating something that one recognizes as being remarkable.

Walk into Memorial Stadium with an acknowledgement that all this and everything that was realized required commitment and a stout dose of resolve.

The only thing I'd add is that a majority of us have realistic expectations. We know the 90's are a treasure that's not returning. Yet we know deep in our bones that there's no reason that we can't get back to being highly competitive and winning again. We've lost our balance. We need to regain our footing.

idk reading over half the names of coaches that over half the posters are suggesting might make me disagree with you here

It’s all right. It’s kind of like playing lottery tickets. At least we can dream for awhile and forget about this nightmare we’re in. We just want to get back to winning consistently. Most of us recognize that we’re not returning to the glory days of past.

BTW what about Sean Payton? :)
