  1. Won't that happen with any candidate we bring in who's any good? If they suck they'll stick around for a long time, but if they're good they will be moving on and moving up. The years of all the assistancts staying on like we had under Osborne are gone. Nobody is going to stay an assistant on a staff for 20 years anymore. Ron Brown seems to be the exception. He's going nowhere. Heaven
  2. For myself (and likely many others) I'm ok with losing 2-4 games a year as long as the losses are competitive in the 4th quarter and we are rarely out-coached.
  3. I hope you're right. As much as people get a warm & fuzzy feeling about "keeping it in-house", I think for Nebraska to get to Top 10 relevant we should be going to the outside for proven candidates at the coordinator positions. With equal talent a more senior staff will beat a junior staff 90% of the time...I think we saw that a couple of times this year, unfortunately. I think JP gets a move up no matter what. I think he needs to. He'll be a head coach in the next 5 years. Personally I'm fine with him solely at DC if some duties are moved around. If we end up with just JP and no splash hire which is just as strong a possibility Els will probably take over special teams. Just tough to tell who does RC. I feel really good no matter what way it ends up. Personally (I could be wrong) I don't think the boosters will give Pelini a long enough leash to allow for a brand new DC like JP to "grow" into their new role. I would suspect the boosters are pushing hard for Pelini to shake up a so-so staff with some proven commodities. I don't think you know any boosters very well then. They are very much behind Bo and what ever HE wants to do. They just wanted to let him know he has options. NOt that it matters with TO in charge, but thank God most of the people writing the checks think Bo is a good coach and this season was a strong season with everything Bo was up against. I know of two guys who were pissy. One was more or less told he was welcome to discontinue his donations because he didn't know what he was talking about. He shut up and handed his check to TO. The other guy was pissed because he demanded Bo personally call him and it didn't happen. His role as a booster was also clarified. Boosters aren't running things around here like they did when SP was AD. They know it and the vast majority are fine with it. I'm sorry, but I think you're naive if you don't think there isn't a formidable percentage of boosters that would like to see Pelini upgrade his staff. Even before Carl left to take a HC job we were outcoached in our 3 losses as well as a few other games (Fresno State being one). The B1G is becoming a conference filled with some savvy veterans and very strong coordinator and position coaches. We are in danger of staying in the middle of the pack if we don't make some upgrades.

  6. He's 55, but I don't see him retiring yet. Possible he may expand on the good publicity he got from the pregame prayer at Penn State and work full-time nationally on his ministry work.
  7. I hope Pelini views this as a great opportunity to show his growth as a HC/CEO and seek out the best up and coming defensive minds out there. No more "inner-circle" hires.
  8. It's also a good chance for him to show he can be a CEO and this time not hire a buddy from his inner-circle. Interview the best defensive minds out there regardless of whether they have a Youngstown connection or not.
  9. My issue with this is if you wait around for a "perfect" time to rotate in subs it may never happen, then you are really screwed when someone goes down to injury or graduates. I'm a fan of rotating in subs during a couple of series as a plan while the game is still in doubt (2nd, 3rd quarter). If you set that precedent you know who's a gamer (rather than practice star) and they are acclimated to game speed. Pelini seemed to do this more in the past with guys like Cody Green, Zac Lee, etc. I'm concerned Pelini's stubborness gets the better of him at times to the detrement of the on-field results.
  10. These are different times. 20 years ago a player trasfering due to being unhappy with playing time was rare, these days much more prevalent. Can you really blame someoene like Carnes for looking elsewhere when he barely saw mop-up duty and the guy in front of him has two more years of eligibility?
  11. My concern is that Pelini's teams have always shown mental lapses that lead to penalties. I'm hoping he and his staff come to terms with this and find ways to improve.
  12. That's because Pelini didn't talk to them, but likely his agent did. That's how coaches can skirt the lie factor, they utilize their agent to start the discussions.
  13. It would not shock me if Bo is being "encouraged" to interview for other opportunities.
  14. Cotton has been pretty much regulated to being a figure-head at this point, I doubt he's leading the O-Line in practice or in game strategy. Now as to why they keep him on staff that's an entirely separate topic...
  15. You want a prize for beating a mediocre team on Senior Day? Oh wait, I guess they did have one...
  16. His bravado & confidence has taken a hit since the end of last year. I think he's realized it's a lot harder to be a Head Coach then he previous realized and that he has a lot of heavy lifting yet to do...
  17. Unfortunately whatever SEC team we face will have talented enough coaches to scout the hell out of our tendencies, and likely the talent to execute on their game plan. This may be a year we wished we were playing against a mid-level Pac 12 team in the Holiday Bowl...
  18. We learned we are an up and down top 20 - 25 team that plays well against pocket passers. Will be interesting to see who we draw in the bowl game.
  19. Can't say he'd be much different than his brother...A talented mind for defense but lacking in other areas needed to be a succesful head coach.
  20. I'd be ok with a future 3 loss season where we were competitive and fought to the last play in the losses. So, definitely not the 2011 Husker season...
  21. Suh is an immensely talented but immature kid with a lot of $...he needs to grow up and hopefully a suspension and having people around him that can give him honest feedack may be just what he needs.
  22. 10 games into the season we have no idea whether backups like Carnes are "gamers" or not. It's much better to rotate backups in at times to get a sense whether they rise to the occasion or disappear into the background. Let alone the fact that you need backups ready and experienced with being under the lights in case the starter is injured. Kids will always surprise you (in either direction) when it comes to this and we should be finding it out rather than waiting for an injury.
  23. When we (including myself) take a step back and look at things objectively, I think it's clear to see that Pelini's future rides on the performance of the team over the next two games and what happens next year. Next year defined as at least 9 wins and being able to be competitive in the losses (no blowouts). For those in charge (AD, other high ranking university employees, and boosters), this is what will determine whether Bo Pelini is head coach in 2013.
