  1. Taylor Martinez IMHO, been an avid fan 52 yrs have seen alot of unsung hero's go unappreciated. Taylor was the main cog in the wheel for 3 yrs, not counting 13. His mistakes and including playing injured, due to no back up that he couldn't out perform at 50% healthy. He broke so many records and would have established marks so high had he had a healthy senior campaign, they may never have been broken. I sometime wonder how many of the fans that couldn't wait for Tommy Armstrong, were having a change of heart during the remainder of the season. Taylor was an amazing athlete that directed Nebraska out of the Callahan era. He didn't bring home the hardware as some we remember so fondly accomplished, however most of those revered had alot more talent surrounding them. He was a warrior elite, his legacy will always be unappreciated because some Husker fans look for greatness with hardware attached. Pity GBR
  2. 95 team I think, 4th string rb ends up starting after suspension of LP and two identical injuries to 2nd and 3rd string back. Of course Green piled up over 1000 yards behind that line. GBR
  3. He reminded me a little of Tommy Frazier with the way he ran at times. Better passer than Tommy I think at that age. Take him in a heartbeat.
  4. Have been curious about Beck because he's been in on the QBs and not much else the last few years. But that makes sense. Alot of talent at the qb position last 3 yrs. Not that Taylor wasn't. Not privy to who recruited Taylor, Green etc...
  5. Couldn't have said it better myself. GBR
  6. It's preferred that all coaches act like TO on the sideline but, I'd rather have my kids and grandkids witness Bo's fiery nature, than to lip read Iowa's coach's lips during the same game. He was just as upset as Bo demonstrated, however Bo didn't use foul language that none of us would say in front of our mothers. Yet not one word about it from the media. GBR
  7. Agree with Mr. Accountability, change of any kind doesn't happen over night. Bo has dialed it down the past couple of years. He only had a couple of slips on TV this year. The media makes such a big deal of it due to his past actions. He lost it less this year and without the foul language the a certain coach that doesn't get blanket media coverage. That's Bo problem, due to his past actions, every time he steps over a line the media thinks is news worthy, they jump on it. The camera men in the stadium should find other things to broadcast, but they need the rating as well.
  8. I'm liking what I see with coach Warren.
  9. It's a long offseason, if everyone agreed, we would have nothing to discuss. Those fans that dis the current class are allowed to be wrong. This class fine. Third yr recruiting for the B1G (not counting the recruiting cycle before 1st yr playing, in the conference. Coaches needed to play a season out to see where we were. Bo has done an outstanding job each of the past three yrs in the final three weeks before NSD. IMHO, these last three classes (I'm assuming 14' verbals sign) have been impressive. Stars mean little once the HS players get to college. I read somewhere that approximately only 30% of the 5* and 48% 4* live up to the hype, where as 25% of 3* play above ranking. There are only a few 5*'s so 30% is a high number, one out of every two are really only 3* talent at the college level. The number of three stars is double that of 4 & 5 star players, and with 25% performing at 4 and 5 stars level, makes it difficult to project how each class is going to do. Now, if you have top classes each yr. Sign a large # of 4& 5 star players, get rid of the ones that don't pan out and oversign to make up for self imposed attrition, then you're going to be more successful on the field. How successful are these same programs in the classroom? Are we as fans, looking at the value of a BS as meh, just to win baby win???? Today's younger fans think they know more about the game than the coaches, would be able to hire the right person to recruit better to satisfy their need for instant gratification. Rome wasn't built in a day. Pelini has had only three real recruiting cycles to build a team for B1G play. So all you bashers out there need to take a step back, look at the whole picture, get behind your team of choice, stop complaining about things you as a fan have NO control over and enjoy the game.GBR
  10. I was referring to his attitude towards the walk on program while he was here.
  11. I've never been one to much stock in stars...the thing that bothers me is who we are competing against for most of the talent we do sign. Granted we offer the higher ranked players and compete with the other traditional top schools, we just don't sign any of them. but I can not remember in the past 50 yrs competing against the likes of the schools we do now. What has happened to the Husker brand? Callahan brought the program to its knees, ie... killed the walk on program which is vital to the Husker brand. Couldn't coach x's and o's nor could he hired a staff to handle that aspect. He did however compete and did well against the other traditional powers in recruiting. He didn't compete against the also rans of college football, those schools offered a player the Huskers wanted and could sign without much drama. During the 70's 80's 90's, I seem to remember 1/3 of the players we wanted were also being offered by the who's who of cfb, TO didn't always get his man, but he got a few.Today we grind the wheel hard to get commits and or flip commits that are headed to schools that aren't on the radar of who's who. Kids with offers from DII schools and lower level D1 schools, I realize there are diamonds in the rough, I grew up during the 50's when we weren't all that good, so I can related to below average recruiting years. That was 55 yrs ago. Have we digressed so far that we may never see the top of the mountain again. Pelini is a great x's and o's coach IMHO, it's his recruiting that leaves a little to be desired. When he had BC players, he demonstrated what he could do with higher ranking players, just as he did at LSU. I like most of the players we sign now, however to return to the elite, you need a few of the elite to mix in with what we now get to reach the 10-11-12 win season on a consist basis. The missing ingredient is the level of talent Pelini is able to lure to Lincoln. Yes, he brings in high character guys, and I love him for it, However there are high ranked players with high character as well, I was really excited about last years class, thought it was a step in the right direction, finally a well rounded class of players, just needing the final two or three pieces. I thought perhaps next yr, he'll sign a couple of the elite players. This yr, he sits on his hands early in the process (his favorite word), and then makes a late push. Why... can't he start that push in the spring and summer, offer the elite players in their junior yrs, bring in the kids he wants and have them commit. We sit in the back seat to no one with facilities, tradition, support, etc... most times we are the trend setter in nearly everything new to cfb. I hear complaints about the distance recruits have to travel to get to Lincoln (It's a great distance to Ann Arbor as well, all of there recruits don't live in Michigan, the campus is just outside the sewers of Detroit, they haven't had a great team in some time, yet they still have the ability to bring in top talent every yr. Nebraska's tradition is second to no one. Mich is #1 all time wins, the Huskers are 4th, you tell me why they out recruit us even after a very poor season. First step, start recruitng harder and earlier in B1G footprint and that will eliminate part of the travel problems. When Penn State offers a kid from Texas, they have to travel much farther and have a more difficult time to get to Happy Valley then they do Lincoln, yet they still get ov's from Texas kids. We need IMHO, a recruiting guru (top salesman, that's what saban is, he's not really a great x's and o's guy) have him coach sp. teams and pay him BIG bucks to bring in the top talented great character guys. Players like Grant Wistrom, Mike Brown, etc.. (this list could go on and on, I just listed a couple for the younger fans to relate to). In 1969, Nebraska recruited a local player who's dream school was USC. USC didn't offer. He accepted Nebraska's offer. That player went on the win the Heisman and put Nebraska over the top talent wise to win it's first NC, and the second for that matter. We need just a couple of difference makers each yr to be in the conversation for the playoffs. Red till I'm dead!!!!!!!!!!! Thoughts?
  12. OU would be great, but allowing texass in would be the beginning of the end of the B1G as we know it today. it would not be for the better of the conference. OU won't come without texass, they would lose some of the recruiting in texass. That's why they claim texass is their rival, more for recruiting than play on the field. Texas would have to make to many concession to join the B1G and that's something the whorns can't do, they can't get over themselves. To much money from the oil industry.
  13. College athletics is becoming more and more just a minor league for the pros. I've always been of a mind that to have a majority, it would take more than 30%. How in the world did majority become 30%. I guess it's alot like the belief in evolution, anything is possible, even the impossible. I for one being a college athletic's fan, that the union idea dies the death it deserves. Can you imagine, paying fb players, above the cost of the education etc, to attend college, get a degree, or by then maybe not, no need for classes if it's just a minor league of paid players. Have the players pay their own way for education, r&b, meals etc. out of their wages. IMHO, they would just be employees of the University. College football would then become much like the pro game to it's determent. The sell out streak at Nebraska would end IMO without any doubt. Who wants to see a bunch of spoiled kids, trying to make it to the NFL, and leaving the university without a degree, there wouldn't be the alumni support, the players wouldn't really care where they went to college due to it not being college really. This is getting out of hand. Hopefully the powers that be will see the real damage to college athletics, however we all know money and the greed of such will rule over the right thing to do. Sorry for the rant that digresses constantly.GBR
  14. It's great seeing the walk on program getting stronger, after BC dumped it. It's taken awhile, but all good things come to those who wait.
  15. Yes he's a native of the state. He is a HUGE Reggie Bush fan and wears his number because he is his idol. He said if he could go to any school in the country it would be USC or UNL. If we want him I think we can get him, unless he ends up being USC's number one back... which with all the talent elsewhere in the country, I highly doubt that ends up happening. Plus when it comes down to it, i doubt this kid goes that far from home. Another Omaha Player wanted to go to USC if they offered (they didn't) he went UNL and won the Heisman. Johnny Rodgers. Went too HS with him. Can lightning strike twice? Hes really good, but there are much better backs in the country. He will be downgraded b/c of his lack of breakaway speed. I would be shocked if USC offered. My point exactly. He doesn't have Johnny's speed, but the change of direction is similar.

  17. huh? +1 Agree. What are you having trouble understanding? Did you watch the game or attend? MS did nothing that the Huskers didn't hand to them. No drive longer than 41 yds, Three drives less than 20. All on unforced turnovers. MS D didn't take the ball away with a stellar D, the Husker O handed it to them. Yeah, they made a few plays against the young D, but if they would have had to go 60, 70 yards, they would not have scored 41, more like 17 at best. IMHO
  18. I guess it's that time of year where we predict how well we think (like our opinions have any merit what-so-ever) the Huskers will do 7 to 11 months from now. Whose crystal ball are you looking into. IMO... The defense will be much improved only losing a couple on the back end. Lots of talent to plug in there. The offense gets hit hard on O line only, I trust Garrison to handle that, he did well with all the injuries last yr. Lots of talent to plug in here as well Special teams were a disaster last yr can only improve Coaching change only 1, hard to project how that plays out. All the negative Nancy's on this board.. With all things considered, the Huskers should do better next season. Why is everyone afraid of Northwestern? No Cain Colter,, they demonstrated how well their offense operated without him last season.... NW is not a threat this yr. I also think everyone hypes up Michigan State way to much.. What did they do last yr in Lincoln without the 5 giveaways, (I say giveaways because they we unforced) MS didn't have a drive for a score for more than 41 yds. Bo's D matches up well wiyh MS. Wisconsin had heavy losses on both sides of the ball, with Borland gone, their D will not be anywhere near as good. I'm not saying we go thru the conference like a whirlwind, but come one guys, have a little confidence in what the Huskers bring back. It seems to me that the past 3 yrs are weighing heavy on alot of hearts on this board. This yr, Huskers make a move up and win the Division, predicting the CCG and bowl game is like playing the lottery. Who are we playing???? GBR
  19. Maybe dementia setting in, but I think it was $20 to $25 for the season...68/72
  20. I agree with you on the Pinnacle rocks, but Memorial stadium has always been a respectful, kindly atmosphere. However Memorial stadium used to rock the same way from 66/67 thru the mid eighties, and a small stretch in the mid 90's. Now BB is on the rise from ashes, kinda like the FB team in the late to early 60's. BB hasn't been there yet so the fans are excited with the direction the team is headed. The FB fans are just the opposite, because we've been there, they expect them to maintain that status every yr. When things aren't going the way they expect, they sit on their hands and don't jump around like we used to. I blame most of this on two things. One the student section, the other are the old timers like myself that are just happy to watch them play, the passion of youth is gone. Personally, I don't like the we alums are given preferred seating by the amount of donations. It's a money thing, and usually money sits and chats, lays back and waits for something exciting to happen instead of getting off their old duffs and making some noise to pump up the team. I haven't heard a great GBR chant in over 20 yrs. The stadium used to be deafening with GBR and DEFENSE chants.
  21. Why? The split in the fanbase following the firing of Solich is very, very ugly. And there is still a hangover from it now. I agree with the Solich reference, but the fans have to grow up and live in the present. I attended most home games and a few away from 69 thru 80, (transferred to Philly), the fans made it impossible for the visiting team to hear. After the 83 or 84 season, it changed until the run in the 90's. then back to silence from the fans. After the hail mary, the stadium exploded like it used to in the early 70's. Wouldn't it be great if the fans could get over themselves and make that type of vocal support in 14. The husker fan base needs about 20,000 AA's to get us back to what we used to be. GBR Looking forward to an exciting season.
  22. If you knew your history of the Huskers, he broke Johnny Rodgers record for TD catches. The 70's teams were not smash mouth football. our QB's were Jerry Tagge, David Humm, and Vince Ferragamo. All three had NFL careers.Jerry didn't do to much at Green Bay, Vince played in the Super Bowl with the Rams, and David played behind the snake (Kenny Stabler) in Oakland. So yes, it is a wonder that Johnny's record lasted as long as it did. So your comment isn't made with the true facts in mind. TO was a QB himself and recruited players at QB who could heave the rock, not run the option. Considering JR was a dynamic game changing player, I'd say the negativity being voiced on huskerboard are most likely young pups who can only relate to the 90's teams. I've been a fan since 62', we were as happy as a pig in s--t in the late sixties and early seventies, yet when TO couldn't beat Oklahoma we had fans that wanted Tom out. Fickle is the fan of college football. It's worse today in our instant gratification society. GBR Be happy Husker fans, we could still have Callahan, and looking at 4 and 5 win seasons with a few 8 and 9's thrown in. Pelini has the Huskers headed in the right direction. Give him time to recruit to the B1G style of play, he's only had three yrs. The past couple have had really good recruiting classes.. GBR
  23. I don't know if the laws have changed, but I was arrested in Denver in 68' for a bar fight, I didn't start it or throw the first punch. I did however spend 30 days in jail. They are out of their minds in Colorado. With all the drug problems they had then and now, you would think they would worry more about DUI. Don't know the facts of the story only the rumor mill. It doesn't matter, hopefully he has a good attorney. Money talks and BS walks in the court system in that sink hole of a state. Best of luck to the young man. If he did indeed defend himself, he deserves a chance to show he's not the LP type.
  24. So many cry baby fans... TO would start out 10-0 playing no one really, lose the last two (oklahoma and the bowl game). Yet this man is a legend. I believe the fan base was just as upset with TO unable to win the last two as fans today upset with BP unable to get past the 4 loss shelf. Different time... TO played absolutely no one until the Oklahoma game. Had Nebraska ranked in the top 5 or 10.. lose the last two and had trouble staying in the top 20 (that's all it was back then top 20) I'm not saying Bo is he guy to take us, or not take us to the promise land. I'm just sick and tired of reading the fair weather fans complaints on Huskerboard. I don't comment much, just like to read others opinions on topics. However, lately it seems all I read is cry baby Husker fans, not happy about something, and think they know the answers. Most of which probably aren't alums, just wal mart fans, like they have in Michigan. Being an alum has no bearing on fan status, just seems like the non alums are the ones with the most negative comments.. Just my opinion. GBR* Class of 72'.
