  1. Thought about this a while back. Manziel is listed on rivals as being recruited by a different TAMU coach, but I would have to think that Zac, as team QB's coach, still recruited him a little bit. Sherman's and ZT's last year on the staff was Johnny's first year in college and Johnny redshirted that year. Even though he was on scout team, ZT probably interacted and coached him up a tiny bit. Two completely different QB's, but it's still cool to think about nonetheless. Semi-related note: I think Martinez should try the same QB guru that Manziel went to, George Whitfield. No knock on Steve Calhoun, but Johnny in his spring ball before he was a starter was as interception-prone and as bad of a passer as freshman & sophomore Martinez. Manziel went to Whitfield in the summer after that, and I watched Johnny from his first game and all of his subsequent nationally televised games and his improvement throughout the season was unbelievably fast. He was making throws against Alabama he wasn't making against Florida in their season opener. I have no qualms with Martinez as a passer this year, but his improvement seemed lesser than Johnny's, who is now a better passer than Taylor. If TM gave Whitfield a try he might be able to experience the same returns, but it's not absolutely necessary. Taylor can hang his hat on a job well-done this season. sorry for the man-crush on Manziel. He is already my favorite non-Husker player in college football history. You must be a young kid to have Manziel as your favorite player after just one yr. To compare him to some of the super stars that have come before him and played great for 3 to 4 yrs. this kid hasn't really done anything yet. No conference titles, NC or any type of hardware and you have him as the greatest in college football history. You sir have a very limited exposure to the real football. The kid had an amazing freshmen yr, won the heisman due to the fact wasn't any competition for the award this yr. You could say he won by default. We'll see what his encore is like in 13. My guess is he'll have his head handed to him. He won't sneak up on anyone next yr. TAMU gets lit up next yr, I see at least 4 losses, and a couple of close wins that could be losses.
  2. And you're basing this statement on what exactly? Tommy will start more than one game next yr because he'll earn it. The kid is a stud, can already pass better than Taylor, he's not as fast a runner, but he does have moves which taylor does not. Taylor runs like a track star, no forward lean and no lateral movement, and couldn't juke my sister. Taylor is a great athlete playing qb, while Tommy is going to be a great qb for us. I'm basing my opinion on players comments that are on the team and play with these guys everyday. Only time will tell of course, but let's face facts, Taylor is not a great qb and never will be. Eric took a team upon his back and got to the NC game before a defense could shut him down. Taylor gets shut down by every good team we play. I think back to all the great texass players that had great speed but really never amounted to anything. Taylor will be one of these types of players. I give credit where credit is due, and Taylor hasn't done anything to deserve to be mentioned in the same category as some of the Husker greats. I'm not referring to titles or conference championships. Taylor cannot take the team on his back and win a game. GBR
  3. I completely agree. Martinez is faster than Tommie Frazier ever was and, if my memory serves me correct, is a statistically better thrower. Frazier had a 48% completion percentage in 1995. Can you imagine the uproar if Taylor threw for that low of a percentage? It wasn't that big of the issue - we didn't pass that much then. It was just as likely to get a 60 yard run as a 60 yard pass completion. Exactly.... I hope that wasn't your argument defending Frazier? Nebraska often used the passing game in those days as the element of surprise (run, run, run, run, run, run, run,PASS!), so that completion percentage should have been much higher.... Taylor is no Frazier overall, but he is a much better passer.... Taylor never has, and never will get the credit he deserves.... What credit do you want taylor to receive. Usually you do something great and you get the credit, the same applies when your gaff's cause momentum to shift and your team to lose the game. I know on more than one occasion, taylor was directly responsible for the defeat due to the turnover. I cannot remember tommie putting his team in that position.
  4. I completely agree. Martinez is faster than Tommie Frazier ever was and, if my memory serves me correct, is a statistically better thrower. Frazier had a 48% completion percentage in 1995. Can you imagine the uproar if Taylor threw for that low of a percentage? Biggest difference I see is that Tommie was a winner period. Yeah, he had some tools, but so did Turner. As did Vince Ferragamo and David Humm. We've had some studs at the QB position, and Taylor is nothing other than a great athlete playing qb. It's the age old question. Would you rather have Peyton, Marino, or Farve? Answer is easy, take the winner, Farve. Doesn't mean he's the best, just means he's is a winner. I've got great news for you boys, Tommy Armstrong is a winner, and he'll start more than one game in 13. You heard it here first. This kid is a winner and he'll take NU to the next level. Book it. GBR
  5. Well boys, I was 21 and living in Omaha at the time. During the commercial breaks, channel 3 I believe, would show different intersections in Omaha and Lincoln. It look like ghost towns. Not a living soul was to be seen. The Omaha water dept made statements that they couldn't keep up the water pressure during commercials and time outs. I attended 3 Husker/Sooner matchups during the 70's, I didn't make that game, could not get tickets. Tickets back then were much more difficult to get. The game itself was a on the edge of your seat from beg to end. Several of the older guys I was watching the game with started making the comment after halftime, that the winner would be the team that had the ball last. I'm not sure if many of you know this, but Okla had the #1 offense in the nation and the #2 defense, while the Huskers had the #1 defense and the #2 offense. It was the greatest matchup of a true #1 vs #2 in every aspect. The player for Okla that scared me the most Greg Pruitt, and Willie Harper shut him down the entire game. I still get chills remembering that game. I haven't watched any replays of the game. I don't think anything could have compared to the actual live event. As a little side note, after winning that game, Keith Jackson stated that the country was just treated the the NC game. The huskers went on the play the then #2 Alabama. Bear Bryant made several remarks about what the tide was going to do to the boys from the cornfields, Their tailback Russo, who was dubbed the Italian Stallion, (no kidding) was going to run all over us. On the first play for the bama offense, Rich Glover tackled him for a 6 yard loss as he got to his feet, Glover patted Russo on the back side and told him (I later found out) to get used to the position, cause he wasn't going anywhere on that day. Final score 38-6 Huskers, and Devaney wasn't one to run up the score, or it could have been much worse. GBR
  6. Do we still use banners to recognize championships? Your comment obviously indicates you argee with me if all you can pick out is my use of the work banner, when most fans would realize the use of that phrase is directly related to my age. You sir have made thousands of comments on this board, and I have yet to find one that was informative or enjoyable to read. I spend time on this site daily and look for my glass of kool aid.
  7. I realize I'm getting in late on this topic, but I'm one to listen to all comments and go from there. For the most part the fans on this board are forgetting one very important fact. NU has always played a weak schedule. Name me a yr in the big 8 that we didn't go 9-1 or 10-0 before the okla game. It wasn't because we were go great, we played against the sisters of the poor, just like every other top team does. You don't play tough competition every week and end up undefeated. I believe the schedule we play now is tougher than the ones we played during the big 8 days. For all you negative posters, I imagine you've never suited up, or if you did, you didn't play much. You act as though you have so much knowledge concerning how to coach and play. You make me sick. I haven't posted much on here and probably won't in the future. You don't need to drink kool aid to realize this team is on the rise, yeah, we got blown out a couple of times this yr, But lets not forget, we played Georgia tough and could have won the game if not for taylor's usual gaffs. interception or fumble at the worst times, against georgia it wasn't just him, ameer helped out in that department. Those were unforced errors and those mistakes are the ones that have killed us. I also believe the young guns will be better than this yrs slow as molasses linebackers. I don't care how much you know the defense, if you're not fast enough to keep up, what good does knowing what to do help you. I'll add another players name that came in, and because of his speed, played lights out. Lavonte David anyone. Played pretty good without knowing the D, just extremely fast to the ball. The offense has returned and the defense will soon follow, if you can't see that, than you are just a naysayer that knows little. I've followed the Huskers since 1958, and with little exception, we've never had the skill at the skill positions that we have now, yeah, a player here or there, but not the overall talent at every offensive skill position. If our O line was anything like TO's teams, no one could stop us, they have trouble now. This is a husker board and our recruits look at this site to check out the fans, it's unfortunate that 70 percent of the contributors on here are negative, because we haven't brought home a title. I would like to have a few new banners myself, but I'll support the huskers with as much positive influence as I can. Support what we have, stop crying about what you want, have a little patience. TO left in after the 97 season. We haven't been a top flight program since. Bo's only had five yrs to repair 11 yrs of avg to poor coaching, loss of recruits with TO's retirement, etc. etc. etc. Grow up you bunch of cry babies. This team will get back to the promise land without your negative crap, and this board would be better off without you. Call me a kool aid drinker if you want, but I'm a true red husker fan, and will not put my team down regardless of how poorly they play. They are my team and will be till I die. I'll support them in victory and defeat. and be proud of the academic all americans we produce. GBR
  8. This senior class can be proud of the wins for each of the last four seasons, no less than 9 wins, no bad boys, not bad at all. Thank you and God Bless you and your endeavors in the future. You'll always be Huskers. GBR
  9. When we win tomorrow night, I'd much rather play Stanford, I'm tired of rematches, esp when we play them again(UDub, UclaI next fall. GBR Beat Wisconsin
  10. Nebraska vs Wisconsin-Nebraska Louisville vs Rutgers-Rutgers Northern Illinois vs Kent State-Northern Illinois UCLA vs Stanford-Stanford Oklahoma vs TCU-Oklahoma Oklahoma State vs Baylor-Oklahoma State UCF vs Tulsa-UCF Nicholls State vs Oregon State-Oregon State Kansas vs West Virginia-W Virginia Boise State vs Nevada-Boise State Texas vs Kansas State-Kansas State Florida State vs Georgia Tech-Florida State Alabama vs Georgia-Georgia
  11. I guess we all have to have something to complain about. I've seen more positive on here today than I have in a long time. Quit your bit_hing, about stupid s_it. Try discussing something worth while like what a great job Beck is doing in his second yr, or how the Huskers have as much if not more talent in the offensive skill positions as I've seen since I became a Husker fan in 1958. Yeah, I'll include the 82 to 84 teams and the 94 thru the 97 teams. Before you jump all over this post, read closely that I'm referring to the O skill positions. Can you imagine the beatdowns the Huskers would lay on opponents with one of the lines from those two era's. Today's Huskers are difficult to contain because of the skill on the outside, backfield and TE. Sorry, but I can't think of one team that since 58 that had this much talent across the board at wr,rb,qb,te.
  12. Husker D plays pro style offense very well. Look for three picks by D. 35--10 Nebraska GBR
  13. Why is it that the newer members on this board are positive, while the members who have been on here awhile are more negative? I'm thinking they're to young to really understand, TO, didn't win his first NC unitl her was a head coach for 20 years. Yeah, he had tremendous success and fans like some on here were complaining about him to. I agree with this post, Get behind your team or get another team, I for one am sick of all the complaining. Positive vibes vs. negative vibes reflects onto the field. GBR
  14. I haven't been a member of this board for long, however, I have been a Husker Fan for more than 50 years. I'm assuming all these fair weather fans on here are youngsters. Stop your complaining and get behind your team win or lose. Sure we'd all like an undefeated season and a shot at the NC. Most of you are to quick to point fingers. Did any of you armchair AD's even play, if so did any of your coaches yell at you for a boneheaded play? Thought so. Let's hang one on Michigan. It's funny how a positive vibe in the stands translates to the field and the players. GBR
  15. Loved the look and loved the outcome, they even scored like the 80's team. I've always thought the early 80's uniform was the best I've witnessed (58-12). Hopefully they'll keep them again for awhile. Perhaps Dr Tom suggested the look to fit the offensive explosion this years team is going to be (yeah, I just took a big swig of red juice, but like the little boy in Angel's in the Outfield said, " it could happen") GBR
  16. The better Turner plays when he's in will open things up for Bell. I'll stick with my first impression of Turner. He reminds me of JR. GBR
  17. Man, it's been a long off season. We're almost there guys. All this bickering..... What happened to this being about Cross. This guys a stud and so is Marrow. Unless the O line is really bad, It's going to be fun watching those two in short yardage. Can't wait for the season GBR
  18. I thought after the Spring game last year, that we had a chance to see another Johnny the Jet. (I went to the same HS as JR). De ja va moments during the spring still believe it. We as Huskers fans. those of us may have the opportunity to see greatness from JT, those of us who've been around since at least 69 may have the opportunity to see lightning strike twice in the same place. Let last year go boys, it's over and nothing changes the outcome or game participants. Drink a bunch of Kool Aid and enjoy the off season dreaming of glory. You can go back to your negative realm when we get ready to strap it on in the fall. GBR
  19. Unfortunately that will be what Niles Paul will be remembered for. Niles Paul is the ultimate poster child for gross under-achievement. You can remember him for that, if you like. I'll remember him for a ton of great plays, instead of several failures. I'll go with flexing in the end zone after a touchdown against Arizona. I truly wish that was the memory I could go with. Instead the game against Iowa State keeps popping up. I still, to this day, ask myself how in the world can anyone fumble the ball away without even being hit? you could ask the same thing of Billy Sims (rb Oklahoma 78 I think), he fumble the winning score away in the fourth quarter, Huskers win 17-14, rrematch in orange bowl---Sooners win 31-24. Sometimes even great players lose focus. Some more often that others.
  20. To clarify that last statement, I was including the coaches as well, the play calling at crucial times is poor at best.
  21. For whatever reason, my beloved huskers seem to choke when things start going wrong. It always seems to be part self destruct and usually it's only against another good team. GBR
  22. [quote name='SkersRule' timestamp='1331 243886' post='930989]I think Chase Rome should be moved to WR and Eric Martin to OC. Those are about the only position changes that haven't been made thus far. Sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm, negativity serves no one, it only serves as conversation fodder to get reactions,
  23. IMHO, JT is best served by playing wr, the qb's at N don't equate to the pros. He has the potential to be outstanding at wr and the possibility to play at the next level. It's in Jamal's best interest to switch positions, and excel there. GBR
  24. Nothing better to do during the off season. What a bunch of crap. Facts delivered, observations made by a bunch of know nothing choir boys and band members. How many of you actually played ball? very few by the comments made here. Get a life, talk about something that we can get excited about or cry in our beer about. To much negativity. If the internet existed during the first 10 yrs of TO's coaching career, (Nebraska was his first head coaching job as well) he would have more than likely taken the Colorado head coaching job. I love the Huskers, and I love reading about them. Bashing the head coach when the team doesn't reach fan expectations is usually BS. I read on the board somewhere that Coach Osborne never lost 4 games in one season, I recall at least one season during the 70's he only won 8 out of 12 (8-3-1). One yr the huskers played 13, but usually 12 including the bowl game. TO played basically the same teams every year. Last year we played in bowl games nearly every week. Much more difficult to prepare for from a coaching and player perspective. GBR
