  1. Wow...remember when minor allegations of misconduct were enough to disqualify someone from office?
  2. Most of the movies and TV shows you watched as a kid contained racist, misogynistic, and homophobic content. Sometimes it was just insensitive, ignorant stuff. Sometimes it was the punchline to a joke. Your childhood books, Dr. Seuss or not, probably also contained a lot of questionable material by today's standards. Sometimes I watch my old favorites with my kids, and then the inappropriate joke that I forgot about comes up. So we often pause it and have a discussion about why that was inappropriate, why we don't repeat those kinds of comments, and talk about why people used to think it was okay to include that stuff. You can learn from these things without necessarily throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
  3. I agree with this. This is an interesting situation, but the author's estate choosing to no longer publish these books (which is a responsible step if they feel that they can cause harm) is very different than a school or government deciding to ban the book. I support the former, but am vehemently opposed to the latter.
  4. Must have been a perfect phone call.
  5. That is one of the things that makes this conversation very difficult. In addition to slavery, our country has been pretty Sh!tty to other minority groups that have not recovered: namely our treatment of Native Americans. But there are others as well. I support the idea of reparations, and I also support affirmative action and anything else that furthers equity and equality. However, what is the best way to do make amends for the parts of our history we are not so proud of?
  6. I have a feeling this describes Ted Cruz's entire network of personal relationships.
  7. Man, you guys gotta read this $h!t. Have you ever read a book, a professional document, a newspaper article? Have you ever had to submit a writing sample as part of a job application? Now read again what Trump just wrote. Hell, most of the posts on Huskerboard are more coherent than this gibberish, and that includes the gameday threads and the Woodshed. Anyone who thought Trump in any way was ever qualified for the presidency must be an absolute jacka$$.
  8. DIsney+ just put up all 5 seasons of the old Muppet show. Our family loves the Muppets, and being Star Wars fans also, we discovered the episode in Season 4 (early 1980) that starred Luke Skywalker, R2D2, and C3PO (with an appearance by Chewbacca). It is comically bad. Almost as bad as the Star Wars Holiday Special, but more charming because of the Muppets and Mark Hamill's self-awareness. You all gotta watch that episode!
  9. That is ridiculously poor wording on this kind of training. A company the size of Coca Cola (any company really) needs to vet their training materials way better than this.
  10. A lot of people in this discussion are keying in on the term "life changing." Maybe instead we can think of this money as "life saving" for some folks around the country who are truly struggling. Would that change the tone of the conversation? That $600, or any amount, can help keep the lights on, food on the table, gas in the car to get to work, or a roof over a family's head for another month.
  11. Reading this conversation has been interesting to me, as I have been working on a couple complaints in my workplace about employees who have concerns about being on campus, due to their own risk factors, being immunocompromised and whatnot. But if an essential function of your job is to be present, continuing to work from home is not a reasonable accommodation if the employer is taking reasonable precautions to keep you safe in the workplace. For teachers, I'm sure many have valid concerns about going back into the school buildings, especially teachers who are older and have other health issues. But if a school is taking mitigating measures (masks, hand sanitizer, distancing when possible, quarantining those who have been exposed, etc) then it is time to go back to work, especially if the medical info we know now is that there is a relatively low risk of spread in the schools. They should still take the virus seriously and if they are worried, I don't blame them. But you still have a job to do. The burden then shifts to the school district and the building staff to do whatever they need to do to keep the teachers safe once they are back.
  12. "Wanting to be a good dad, I would like to throw my daughters under the bus as I attempt damage control."
  13. They have lived in fear of government tyranny for decades, and have been prepping for their moment to defend our rights and freedom. But of course, when someone actually comes in to act like a dictator and threaten our country's values, they fully support him.
  14. You keep saying things like this, but do you actually think that even if we had video of Trump saying, "I am hereby inciting you to riot at the capitol" and a page from Trump's daily planner sayying "incite riot" with a chekmark next to it, that a majority of GOP senators would vote to convict? The last 4 years were an exercise in the GOP and the right-wing media imploring people to ignore the evidence that they see with their own eyes and hear with their own ears to defend Trump and smack down the liberals at any cost. The GOP have been putting Trump over country for years. The Dems have dropped the ball on many things over the years, but the failure to get a conviction here was purely a function of Republican complicity, not the Dems prosecution efforts.
  15. Ah, now the GOP's long term plans come into focus!
  16. Half-heartedly asking the toothpaste to get back in the tube does not mean that you are not responsible for squeezing it out.
  17. If you are trying to make us think about Episode 1 AND do math at the same time, you can go to hell, sir.
