  1. I know there is a lot of "these things take time" talk going on around here. I honestly think that we will have our defense issues somewhat fixed, at least to a serviceable level, come Saturday. There is too much football knowledge on the staff to continue to let this type of train wreck keep on going.
  2. It is fun to speculate. I am looking for what's behind door number three: Osborne-level Nebraska Football. Not immediately, but there should be signs of progressing to that point in years 1 and 2.
  3. So, in your opinion, there's no difference between someone being a head coach at a university for 7 years and one being a head coach at a university for about 10 months? Do you also bake cookies and take them out of the oven after 1 minute, or do you wait and see what they become? We saw what one coach had become. We're still waiting to see what the other is capable of. Besides the amount of time each coach has had at the helm, there is no difference. That is what the OP was getting at, I think. I never said anything about what I thought the difference between them was. I am still trying to figure out exactly what we are supposed to be talking about here. BTW, depending on the type of cookies you are baking determines the amount of time they stay in the oven. Unless of course, they are no-bake cookies, which require no time to wait and see what they become.
  4. I get what the writer is saying. What she fails to realize though, is that those schools climb out of the muck every now and then. Look at Baylor. It has everything to do with the head coach. If Illinois wants to play with the big dogs, find a good head coach and pay for it like everybody else. If that coach doesn't work out, fire him and find another, and pay for him. Rinse, lather, repeat, until you find the coach that is successful.
  5. Wow. Wish I could go to this game. Tickets are as cheap as $17. You can get seats midfield for $50.
  6. What's the difference? The amount of time? There is no other difference in that statement that I can make out. Does this mean that MR gets seven years before we can recognize that the players aren't executing the scheme efficiently or effectively?
  7. Great improvement from TA. He will be awesome next year.
  8. That is crazy. Maybe penalties are actually a good thing. Too bad we contributed the two losses.
  9. There is a reason there are so many old people in the stands at Nebraska. For 30 some years "blowout boring" was the norm. I just don't think our blue hairs can handle much more of this excitement. I am begging MR to please get us back to "blowout boring" and spare those people their lives!
  10. Houston Nutt disagrees. But I see what you are saying. I will chalk Houston Nutt up to just plain stupidity on the part of Steve Pederson.
  11. If we play to our potential, we could beat every single team left on our schedule. If the defense does not get fixed though, we could be looking at a rough go of it. After getting gashed through the sky 3 times already, I am hoping the fix to this problem will be coming soon. I think it will, and I predict 7-1.
  12. Sometimes I think the same thing. But then again, I have watched a lot of football, and I can see a train wreck in progress, as can a lot of other people. I think people are just voicing their concerns and hoping for the best. Man I hope this defense gets fixed. Our offense actually is not too bad. If the defense can improve from terrible to mediocre, I think the season may be able to be salvaged.
  13. Time to double down on all the kool-aid I drank in the off season. We will win the west! GBR!
  14. I keep hearing this about Collins and Valentine, but I'm not seeing it. What has Collins done all year to warrant this hype? What did he do last year? He's barely affecting the passing game. Valentine is hurt right now, but in prior years I don't recall ever being overly impressed with him. Freedom Akinmoladon is four games into his playing career on defense. I think we could let him put together a full season before we start pimping him for the NFL. After the start we have had to this season, I agree with you.
  15. Huh? 2015 - 10.3 penalties per game 2014 - 5.8 penalties per game 2013 - 5.9 penalties per game 2012 - 6.2 penalties per game 2011 - 6.6 penalties per game 2010 - 7.8 penalties per game 2009 - 7.1 penalties per game 2008 - 7.2 penalties per game Facts, they don't belong here. Your ruining the spin, stop it.
  16. There's a lot of truth to this. Th LB can't stop the run, so the safeties have to come up and help. The LB can't stop the crossing routes so the secondary has to help setting up islands on the outside. Ip am agreeing with you on scheme, but we do have a talent deficiency as well. Exactly right. Look, Banker's D isn't shy about its willingness to give up the pass to stop the run. The problem is that the weakness to the pass is being exaggerated because (1) we have no pass rushers (except maybe Freedom), (2) we don't have the corners to run man-to-man single coverage, and (3) our LBs can't cover the underneath routes. I think Banker's scheme is a much worse fit of our existing personnel than what Riley is trying to run on O. We have NFL talent pass rushers in Maliek Collins and VV, plus Freedom. It is not a personnel problem. All off season we heard about stopping the run and being vulnerable to the deep routes. Which everyone was all for because it was such a "low percentage" play that it was worth the risk. Well, after getting burned three games through the air, losing two of them, I would say it is definitely the scheme.
  17. Me too. A lot of people may already know this but I heard last weekend from a pretty reliable source, THE ONLY reason he's not our current HC is bc the media announced it before it was ever actually official and he backed out. Thank you press! why would that cause him to back out? im not sure I buy that. Ive heard from many people in the know that he was offered, so I believe you there. If he wanted to coach at Nebraska, im not sure why a news story saying he might coach Nebraska would cause him to back out. There was a little more to the story that I'm a little fuzzy on bc of the day's activities but something that happened with the media before it was official was the primary reason he backed outHeard that he was offered the job, but the media reported it before Bert could make the announcement so he backed out. Apparently he's got that burr in his saddle. I wouldn't trust anything that comes out of the AD or chancellor's office. But you'd trust the media? Or Bielema? Or his agent? The timeline alone makes Riley the obvious first choice. No way was there time to meet, greet, discuss, etc. another coach and still get Riley hired in 4 days. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, where did I ever say that I believed any of those 3? All I said was that was the info put out there at the time. I don't recall the timing, but I thought that there was more time between the firing and the hiring. Even if it were only 4 days, there would have been time to interview and negotiate with other candidates. 4 days to interview and negotiate two coaches for a big time program? It did not happen. I was surprised Riley was hired so fast. For SE and HP to offer one coach, interview and negotiate with him, then offer another coach and interview and negotiate with them, it would of taken longer than 4 days.
  18. I never did trust the Bielema rumors. Mike Riley's hire came too fast. To me it seemed obvious he was the first choice of SE.
  19. Getting beat by S. Miss? I don't think so. At least I hope not anyway, anything's possible I guess.
  20. I think you bring up a good point. I thought we got hosed on the divisional alignment in the Big 12 as well. I was happy when we moved to the B1G because we were doing something to fix that, and then I think we just got hosed again with the re-alignment of the B1G. We need at least one stable and nationally relevant team, besides ourselves, in our division to give us a measuring stick each and every year. We had Oklahoma in the Big 8. Since then, the slide has continued. We should have fought hard to be aligned with either Michigan, Ohio St. or Penn St. But we lost out on that as well. Now our main opposition is Wisconsin, which is nothing to sneeze at, but they aren't the competition we need.
  21. This thread actually turned into something that is quite interesting. Which teams play more walkons, and at what point do they play? It would be interesting to find out which teams are doing more with less (Wisconsin) and which teams are just doing more with more (Alabama). At least on a larger scale than what has already been done here.
  22. Thanks for transcribing that. I read along as I listened. He makes a lot of sense. I hope he is right when he says we will be fine. I do agree with him though about our upcoming schedule until Michigan St., those are all games where we won't see the type of talent we saw with Miami. I am just worried about if we play football like we did in the first three quarters against Miami. If that continues, we could drop a couple of those easier games.
  23. Nebraska first 1-2 record since 1981 isn't going to cause it. Also with the home opponents on the schedule it defintely won't end soon. Since Michigan State could be coming in as #2. Oh yeah? I thought early '60's instead of 1981. (Devaney's era) Only reason I know is it is kept being brought up everywhere I look... It does feel weird having that record for the first time in my life. For fun the 1981 season: @ Iowa - L 7-10 (Nebraska was #7, Iowa was unranked) Florida St - W 34-14 Penn St - L 24-30 (Nebraska was #15, Penn St #3) Auburn - W 17-3 Colorado - W 59-0 @ Kansas St - W 49-3 @ Missouri - W 6-0 Kansas - W 31-15 @ Oklahoma St - W 54-7 Iowa St - W 31-7 @ Oklahoma - W 37-14 Clemson* (Orange Bowl) - L 15-22 (Clemson was #1, Nebraska #4) So won out after 1-2 start until Orange Bowl. That's a tough schedule. Could you imagine playing that schedule today? Wow.
