  1. Ill chime in. Diehard fan for 30+ years. A wikipedia hire, with sub par staff and a lot of potential...........I have seen enough with this hire to realize SE isn't serious about making NU a force to be reckoned with. Where is the proof this staff can develop talent? a .504 career W-L?, the fact players have won individual awards? He is a nice guy. Great. He will have more resources. So what. What has Reilly or his staff done to be automatically declared an upgrade. The fact his staff has experience? Absolutely, but what means this will correlate into wins? I hope Reilly returns us to the ranks we all desire. It just seems like a "meh" hire to even less excitement with OSU staff members.......I'm done with the kook-aid, win or be gone. Michicken let the college football world know they expect (want) to win now. Not in 2-3 years, but know.......... No splash hire at HC and even less at the staff......... I will be the first to apologize when we win and win big, but as someone posted earlier about our new OC, his highest rated running game was like 81st IIRC. That won't get it done in the B1G.........From 2005-2010 (Reilly took over play calling in 2011) they had one season where as a team they rushed for more than AA did this year....(barely) It's not like the PAC 12 has always been this good i.e. USC, UCLA, Arizona, Oregon and Arizona St, so a .504 looks even lower when put into perspective of the PAC 12 historically...... I'm N, but not drinking any kook-aid. Decent rant. Is Riley really that hard to spell though?
  2. Why would he want to? He's had ties to MU since he was a little boy tagging along with his Dad when he went to work. Again NFL, is a revolving door, Michigan is a job he can retire from. T_O_B There are a few reasons. Harbaugh is being viewed as a savior currently. With that happening comes incredible time demands and he is going to get pulled in every single direction imaginable and be under a ridiculous microscope. Now, for your typical big time fball coach (Meyer for example) he understands the song and dance and doesn't know anything different. However, Harbaugh has excelled at the NFL level as well where you are able to spend the vast majority of your time just focusing on coaching. In addition, you have recruiting and all the crap that comes with that plus the limitations on time you can actually spend coaching. I personally think Harbaugh will stick around as long as Meyer sticks around. However, if I fast forwarded 3-4 years and you told me Harbaugh left to go back to the NFL it wouldn't shock me in the least.
  3. Who cares? I don't care if they recruit drunken, homeless guys if it translates into conference titles.
  4. I'm actually more concerned now after seein this. So far we havent hired anyone of consequence from anywhere that has a history of winning. What makes everyone so sure being at NU will magically make them winners? Not saying it cant happen, but I feel like we have taken a really large gamble on the staff we have hired so far, starting at the top. Here is what we know to be true: Mike Riley won sporadically at Oregon State with a lifetime winning percentage of just over .500 His major hires are all guys whom coached with him at OSU Mike Riley seems to be the guy who is actually running the offense, but we hired Mr. Langsdorf for the OC position, who again has been coaching a while but still hasnt proven success anywhere. (Save me the 1 year at NY with Eli Manning and the statistical turnaround, this could just be coincidence, no track record) I know the vast majority on this board are confident in Mike Riley. But all I'm seeing is alot of justifying why, no clear evidence....and thats scary. Michigan just hired Jim Harbaugh, is there any doubts he will get that program moving in the right direction? I know in our division a monkey could win 9 games a year. I just hope we didnt hire a toad instead. I get this line of thinking but simply disagree with you, which is no biggie. I don't care what the media has to say about the hire. But all I've read so far is Riley has garnered near universal respect from every coach who has been asked about him and thinks the world of him as a coach and talent evaluator. Lastly, to me the proof is in the pudding, can you put guys in the NFL? Oregon State currently has 19 guys in the NFL which to me is insane given Corvallis' location. By comparison, Nebraska has 26 guys. http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30800&ATCLID=209264255 http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=186555
  5. Wow. I mean...seriously? This is like criticizing the fry cook at McDonalds for not being able to make foie gras. Not that there's anything wrong with working at McDonalds.
  6. Bell has worn the FOE on his forearms his entire career if I'm not mistaken. I seriously doubt he will regret that.
  7. Probably more of a lateral quickness issue. Watch the film and he is just slow on cutting and getting in right position often leading to the missed arm tackling. I am pulling for the guy but a lot of groans from the section I was in. He has a nose for the ball...if he can get to it. How much of that was from the system though? We had the same problems at LB and with corners for years now. Nate can run with anybody. The only person I've ever seen out run him was that #2 for USC the other night. I don't think he lacks lateral speed either, it's just being out of position or thinking too much that makes him look slow and he usually compensates for that. He was a much more dependable safety than Cooper was, and a better athlete too. Not saying I'd move him...just bringing up the topic for discussion. USC was clearly faster...and Melvin Gordon says hello. In the section I was in if Husker fans wanted to blame a bad offensive series the blame went to TA. If they wanted to blame a bad defensive series the blame went to Gerry. Some were calling him Pat Ricketts which got some laughs. Not saying either are right but this was the vibe from the bowl game. I like the kid...but I don't think he is speedy fast/quick...maybe against most BIG teams but not against the type of speed that USC, Oregon, FSU, 'Bama, and tOSU have. The people you sat with are dolts. You must be the only person who doesn't think he's fast.
  8. I don't personally see RG projecting much more then a 3-4 LB and a pass rusher on 3rd down. I would draft him at the end of the 1st round or somewhere in the first half of the 2nd. Thus, I believe he would actually prepare himself best for the NFL by staying with the Huskers, adding 10-15 pounds and working on techniques and getting stronger and faster. That is a great way to make a lot of money in the NFL. He definitely fits better as a 3-4 OLB but he can play three downs. He's basically the same size as Von Miller was coming out of college and the Broncos played Miller as a 4-3 DE and he piled up sacks. If you can rush the passer as well as RG4 can, you'll play a lot for a long time in the NFL. Ha, I wish I would've seen your post first. You summed up my thoughts quite well. It would be an act of lunacy on Gregory's part to come back to NU.
  9. The skill set you described in todays pass happy NFL makes him a top 10 draft pick. Short of him getting hurt, bombing at the combine or off the field issues cropping up there is zero chance he drops out of the top 10. He's essentially Von Miller plus 3 inches. You know where Von Miller went? #2 overall. I'm simply curious, why do you see him as a bottom 1st round draft pick?
  10. That's an interesting take on the blue jersey that I hadn't considered. I always thought of it as a 'I remember how hard I worked on scout team to get a shot at playing time so I wear this as a reminder of what it takes to get on the field'. I know a few people who have done similar things (while not as visible naturally). One of my close friends kept the apron of the pizza place he worked at during college and used it as fuel that he never wanted to go back there when things got tough in law school.
  11. I absolutely love this hire for Michigan and the Big Ten as a whole if it comes to fruition. If the Big Ten is ever going to get back to national relevance, moves likes this need to be made. Harbaugh may only be there for 5 years, but he's going to turn Michigan into a nightmare for those 5 years. Personally, I see him staying as long as Meyer stays @ OSU (natural parallel between Harbaugh/Meyer to Hayes/Schembechler.
  12. Ivan Lewis was born in 1978, the timeline doesn't make sense for him to be here in the 90's. http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/ivan_lewis_880409.html
  13. I too, was a little surprised @ Frost turning down CSU. The cupboard is hardly bare there (Higgins and Hart both slated to return). While the most likely reason he stayed was he wants to build up his coaching chops some more and prove he can do it w/ Mariotta, a small part of me thinks he's a little bit delusional. I put Frost a level or two below a guy like Chad Morris who was 'only' able to parlay his success at Clemson into the SMU job. Even if he really succeeds over the next couple years I can't see his first HC job being nothing more than a lower tier P5 job (like Kevin Wilson @ Indiana). Maybe that's what he's holding out for.
  14. Why are people so upset, isn't Gangwash playing less a good thing? He's f'ing terrible.
  15. Man, you sound like one miserable f%&k*
  16. Does the University have the money I always hear they have. After the last two buyouts, will they want to spend what they need to compete with the OSU's, Ala"s. Would they let Riley put together a staff the size of say, Ala. Didn't Bo just get the use of a Jet last year. Would think some of the other big program would have had one long before Neb did. Just seemed to me that the university was tight with the buck, for a long time. GBR!!! Nebraska will be raking in the cash even more once they become full fledged members of the Big 10 (next year or two?). Money won't be an issue, whether the school wants to flex it's financial muscle is another thing.
  17. Some fair points here although I disagree with most of them. I completely disagree with the Frost talk. Oregon's offense w/ Mariota at the helm runs itself. If he can prove to be an effective HC over the next couple years, it would be nice to see him take the reigns after Riley calls it quits (or is forced out). Most of the schools you mentioned either had success in lesser divisions (Boise/TCU--although this year has been different--chalking it up to Patterson bringing in Cumbie but whatever) had an off the charts QB (RG3, Prescott, Alex Smith coupled with the Urbs or weaker conferences to deal with. If you've never been to Corvallis it's hard to describe how tough it is to recruit there when you are under Oregon's shadow in addition to butting heads against conference foes who all have programs that have dedicated vastly more resources to football with maybe the exception of Washington State. Oregon State has been throwing the ball a lot more for two reasons. 1) They've had stud WRs, they just put Brandin Cooks and Markus Wheaton in the NFL (both top 3 round picks) 2) The areas they recruit are filled with pass happy high schools and JuCos. If you can't get elite talent to your school, you have to coach up what's around you.
  18. My goodness you just described: Paul Johnson Sport(s) Football Current position Title Head coach Team Georgia Tech Conference ACC Record 57–34 (.626) Biographical details Born (1957-08-20) August 20, 1957 (age 57)Newland, North Carolina Coaching career (HC unless noted) 1981–1982 1983–1984 1985–1986 1987–1994 1995–1996 1997–2001 2002–2007 2008–present Lees–McRae (OC) Georgia Southern (DL) Georgia Southern (OC) Hawaii (OC) Navy (OC) Georgia Southern Navy Georgia Tech Head coaching record Overall 164–73 (.692) Bowls 3–6 Tournaments 14–3 (I-AA playoffs) Statistics College Football Data Warehouse Accomplishments and honors Championships 2 Division I-AA (1999–2000) 5 SoCon (1997–2001) 1 ACC (2009) 4 ACC Coastal Division (2008, 2009, 2012, 2014) Awards Eddie Robinson Award (1998) 2x AFCA Division I-AA Coach of the Year (1999–2000) Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award (2004) 2x SoCon Coach of the Year (1997–1998) Sounds like a real good fit for Nebraska. Not short on experience. Young enough so that he could be at Nebraska for 20 years. Has moved several times but still looks to be stable rather than a coach that moves whenever a new brass ring presents itself. Tressel is still a bit tainted from his days at OSU. Kiffin is a bit of a flake. Frost is an unknown commodity as a HC. I would almost bet SE will end up hiring someone we don't even discuss here but still, with the regular season over speculating about who the next HC will be is about all we've got t do. T_O_B Just stop it. We get it, you love the option. I never say never because wacky stuff happens all the time, but man, if Paul Johnson got hired at Nebraska. Nebraska would be totally fu^^ing fu^^ed
  19. I don't think Jimbo Fisher is a great comparison. He was an OC for 11 years at 3 different schools (Cincy, LSU, FSU) before he got his shot at a big seat. I'd say he's probably a little bit more polished (coaching-wise, certainly not speaking-wise) than Frost. I do see your point though.
  20. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa... Since when does that mean anything? Iowa's football program has been irrelevant for 56 years. Whoopee de doo we beat them. When you beat a team you should beat it means nothing. T_O_B Iowa was a favorite according to the oddsmakers.
  21. Love this guy but would think he's the front runner for the UF job.
  22. Its just a list, newby. My first choice for HC is Paul Johnson who is hardly pass happy and Dennis Erickson didn't make my favorite 5 for HC. "I want nothing to do with Scott Frost right now." Doesn't exactly put you in the majority here and I was looking for him as OC. "I'd love to snag Bilemma (sp) he's onery, I love the way Arkansas plays and it would dump gasoline on the Wisconsin rivalry." Really? "Bielema's first season at Arkansas resulted in an overall record of 3-9, including 0-8 in the Southeastern Conference. It was the Razorbacks' worst SEC conference mark since entering the league in 1992 and their first winless in-conference season since 1942, when they were a member of the Southwest Conf." You want this guy because he's "onery" and because it would "dump gasoline on the Wisconsin rivalry." In the words of JohnMcEnroe, "You can't be serious." You might want to take a look at HuskerHipster's thread here he's a first time poster too and his post is spot on. T_O_B It's a severely flawed list w/ lots of incorrect information on it. Are you supposed to get a pass because you put so much time into it? Boo hoo, I'm in the minority here in regards to my thoughts to Frost. Whoopity Doo. Do you really think Frost will come here unless he's guaranteed the HC job down the road? If he does, good luck getting anyone but a lame duck coach to fill in. So, are you just forgetting all the success BB had at Wisconsin? Plus the fact that he's a midwest guy (went to Iowa) and preaches a very physical style of football. 3 straight Big Ten Championships and 3 straight BCS appearances (I realize he lost 2 of them and Alvarez coached in the 3rd one)? Yet, you want to hire Paul Johnson who has won only one conference title and only BCS bowl appearance ended in a loss to Iowa of all teams? To borrow from your quote. YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS. I doubt we would pry BB away from Ark. With his record I can't believe the Razorback fans would let him go. Time to get ready for school newby, your lunch box is packed and the bus will be there soon. T_O_B Cute comments.
