Does transferring to FCS count as "going down? I thought it did but don't really know.

To finish off my original comment, let us consider the real use of the four game redshirt rule. TL doesn't transfer, stays with the team but doesn't play anymore. He spends the next 10 months improving his skills and anything else that can be improved. When he steps on the field in September he is still a sophomore and a better player and this year wasn't wasted. Don't think it's going to happen this way but this is, I think, the intent of the rule .

my 2 cents worth. the four game red shirt rule wasn't written to facilitate transferring. It was written with the hope of keeping younger players "engaged". It also would help older players who are injured early in the season, ie/ Honas (sp?) and could be used by players coming back from a season ending injury last year. We had a lineman that came back and played in the last 3 or 4 games so he could be on the field at the same time as his brother. That cost him a year. If he had a redshirt left it wouldn't have. the midseason transferring is an "unintended consequence" of the new redshirt rule. But it didn't change any of the "old" rules. Players have a five year clock. Unless a graduate, you sit for a season at your new school. you can't sit at school A, transfer, and then play next year for school B. That's why TG split in such a hurry. He need to get enrolled at his new school for the first semester. He is sitting this season and can play next year. Once he become eligible his five year clock will limit him to three years of playing for his new school even through he never played a down for Nebraska.

You know... There are only 15 teams in the top 15 of the recruiting rankings but 25 in the team rankings therefore there will always be at least 10 teams not ranked in the recruiting list in the top 25

There are no midseason academic transfers. You can redshirt, you can even quit the team, but the soonest you can get into another school is when their next semester/quarter starts. And unless you have graduated you have to sit an academic year.

The only loophole that exists is for a grad transfer. With some effort on the players part the player could red shirt during his true junior year at ABC College, graduate from ABC, transfer to XYZ and be eligible next fall with two years of elgibility remaining. TG will be eligible at OSU next fall because he will have spent an entire academic year in residence at OSU. Even though classes had started at UNL he was able drop out here and get to OSU before their classes started. His five year clock started at UNL so he will have three years left on his clock and because he has never played anywhere can play all three years there.

Having read the article, a team scores points by simply making the postseason. I suppose the closer your bowl game is to Jan 1 the more points you get and going farther in the NCAA tournament scores more points. First goal has to be "make the postseason".

I just checked on huskers.com and Nebraska offers 9 men's and 13 women's sports. So we could be at a disadvantage when comparing to schools with more men's sports. Its value maybe in the consistency of UNL's ranking. Since this year's ranking is the worst ever thing are not good in huskerland.

Not certain if 30 is long enough. Until the NCAA made the rule that severely limited the booster's role in recuiting it was the wild wild west. Boosters could make first and unmonitored contact. Jobs for parents, cars and worse were common. There was an old "joke" about a high school star who alledgily stuck up a gas station. Boosters fixed it and that and said to keep him out of we'll just buy him his own 7-11 and he can clean out the register any time he wants.

I'm stumped. The picture with Jeter and White was probably taken for the 1965 season. Maybe someone has access to a program from that vintage. A couple of tackles in that class where Walter Barnes and Dennis Carlson, but there were a lot of linemen.

Yeah but...... The way I read this is athlete still has to sit out a year after transferring. That should tone down the free-agency aspect. It would encourage them to really be a student during their transfer year and not bag-it during their "first" senior season. Also they could red shirt at their first school and check things out more and not rush their transfer decision.

I think Mike Pereira is ahead of himself. According to ESPN it won't be voted on till April. The quote from ESPN's web site "The potential change, which was made with player safety in mind, will be sent to coaches and conferences for feedback in the coming weeks. It still needs to be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which is scheduled to discuss it -- and other proposed rule changes -- April 13."

No, the way it is written is "athletic opportunity" so it is essentially "roster spots" that count. A recruited walk-on counts. Roster spots must match up with the proportionally clause as mentioned in the original post. There was another earlier thread with more detail. Perhaps some can find it and bring it back.

I, for one, would be interested in comparing a set of similar numbers from other schools.

"....can he return to school and football?" It depends on whether Lee has hired an agent. Also, some of these All Star games pay the players. Don't remember which ones. Both cases would end your college eligibility.
