  1. A few other issues with running that style of offense today is because high schools are no longer running it. So you don't have kids running that system in high school so you would be teaching kids new stuff they have never heard before. It would be harder to find kids that fit your system because you would be guessing they would be good at those roles. The same could be said for filling out a full coaching staff of guys with the right experience and expertise to teach the kids. That knowledge and expertise is going to die with the likes of the Osborne's of the world. But again many fans and national pundits claim the Huskers in the 90's were an option team but they were not. It was part of their arsenal but not all they did.
  2. Really anyone with success in the SEC or BIG10 is where I would focus. Those are the top 2 conferences. SEC obviously being the best. If you can coach in the SEC you can do the BIG10. But taking a guy with BIG12 or PAC12 experience wont get me excited. Considering defense is optional in those conferences how many great D coordinators did they have to scheme against.
  3. I would love it if we ran the Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow offense. It was spread but physical power game at the same time. Tebow couldnt throw for s#!t- but it was good enough to win a natty or 2.
  4. I would bet the number of option plays ran in 97 went down even more. I think it would have always been a staple of Osborne system. But it was becoming a smaller percentage over time as he was diversifying.
  5. This is the last guy I remember talking about the strain so much.
  6. I agree. If you look at the mid 90s Husker OL. They were between 280-310 and all super athletic guys. If you are 290 and fast and athletic and will fire off the ball faster than a 320 lb guy. I am taking the 290 lb guy to win that battle
  7. I think what you will see from the top teams is being efficient in all phases of the game. Special teams they have a guy who can get touch backs nearly every time, good punter, field goal kicker makes their kicks. Defense- usually elite against the run and good against the pass. Offense. I think too much is weighed on run/pass percentages. I think if you are great at one and efficient enough at the other. and you have all those other pieces you will be a top 10 team. Great at run and can pass enough to threaten the D. Or great at passing but can run enough to throw off the D. Those teams at the top are not at the top because they pass it 60% and run it 40%. There are at the top because they are good at all 3 phases of the game. You could go find teams who are great at running but have s#!tty special teams and a bad defense and they dont win alot. You could go find teams who are great at passing the ball but have s#!tty special teams and a bad defense and they dont win alot. It takes all 3 phases to be top 10.
  8. Good points. I think it was basically Nebraska and military schools running some form of option in the 90s. To be fair our system had evolved and the option was just a piece of what we did. Not all of it. And your right the majority thought it was outdated and couldn’t work. And then 60-3 happened. But Osborne was evolving the offense over time- like 97 we ran more stuff out of shotgun. The problem came when Osborne retired and the innovation Osborne brought to keep modifying the system stopped and solich took the play calling back to the 80s. Plus the talent was going down. So new play caller and less talent reduced our results and was enough evidence to move on to a new coach and new offense after on field results suffered. If Osborne kept coaching what would it have looked like 10 years later. Probably similar to Urbans Florida teams or the current coastal Carolina.
  9. Or give him a $9 Million salary and take $750k away after every loss
  10. Exactly. Whoever comes here is going to get a nice pay day and if they can make it work they should have some good job security for years to come. Most of these coaches have some arrogance and think they are the smartest and best there is. I don't think most of them are sitting back saying I will fail if I go to Nebraska so I better find an easier job. No, I would bet most are saying I am going to cash in on that pay day and make a name for myself getting that offense rolling.
  11. Hell no. Look at the schedule next year. 9+
  12. It's not really that bad of a decision for an assistant coach. Say you are the OC we choose. You get a 2 year contract at 1.5 million. You get paid 1.5 million next year then the staff gets fired and you get your buyout money and if you are a decent coach you get another job plus buyout money. Seems like a pretty good idea to me.
  13. Yes- I think to be consistent year in and year out we are better off not relying on needing an elite QB. Rely on a new PIPELINE and solid backs. Sure you try to get an elite QB just like everyone else. But you don't NEED one to be good.
  14. Tom Herman would be a great hire for OC. Art Briles would be pretty good too. Could get him on the cheap I am sure since he is coaching high school in Texas right now.
  15. Some have commented on here they are hearing we may switch offensive system. If that is true then Helfrich makes no sense as he is an Oregon guy
  16. Time for Frost to pull a hoiberg and bring back a previously fired head coach. Bill Callahan offensive line.
  17. I miss when keeping a coach was based on results (W's and L's) not how much his feelings are hurt by losing. Holy s#!t.
  18. Not sure I trust Frost's evaluation of staff. Was our offensive line good the last 3 years? Cause if memory serves me right he promoted Austin to Run Game Coordinator last year. With a run game coordinator on staff I guess I would have expected a relevant run game.
  19. So basically Frost wasn’t giving it his all. Maybe that’s why we not doing well as a program. If he was working as hard as he did at UCF I bet we win more games
  20. I get that, but your missing the point that we should be in a much better place after 4 years. 3-9 most likely in year 4 is not showing any signs of heading in the right direction. 6-6 he is back next year. I think we can agree 6-6 is very low standards and a long leash. Frost is the one not doing his part to show he deserves 7 years. You seem intent on being frustrated with the program like it may not honor 7 years. But Frost is not holding up his end. Hell if he gets to 5-7 this year he might be back. Talk about a long leash. You think any other school would keep him? I’m not talking blue bloods. f#&%ing Kansas would fire him
  21. If Frost is the coach we hope he is. He shouldn’t need motivation from how long his contract is. Do you think Saban does a better job if his contract is longer? I doubt it. He is self motivated by the desire to be great. I think we gave him 7 cause we thought we were hiring the next Saban.
  22. Are you saying that because fans on a message board are upset that Frost May be the worst W-L coach in husker history. That is making him a worse coach? Cause I would venture to say what happens on this board has nothing to do with bad in game coaching decisions Nor makes Martinez turn the ball over constantly. Do you think Martinez isn’t developing and can’t work through his progressions after 4 years in the program because of Huskerboard?
  23. So your saying because he had a long contract he did not try as hard to turn the program around as aggressively as he could? He was taking his time
  24. We are probably the best 3-6, soon to be 3-7 team in America. I am confident in that.
