Exactly what I was thinking...what if he would have caught it, not fumbled and scored? The TD wouldn't have counted. Very confused about that call

Maybe it was a makeup call for the BS low hit on the quarterback.

only dead ball if he caught the ball FROM out of bounds. since he came back in bounds it was just illegal touching which is a live ball penalty
