  1. A successful BBall program is a sleeping giant (financial and otherwise) in these parts... I'm officiall 'calling my shot' - TO sees this, and will do his absolute best to leave Volleyball (new facilities) and Men's Basketball on an upward trajectory before his depature. how's that for just 'a Thursday'...?
  2. Where did he steal the base offense of 'pass to the guy who's closer to the half court line' from...? ...sorry to be a smartass. I've been thru a very successful cocktail hour.
  3. just good to see increasing posts on this side of the board... Like I've said previously, "build it and they will come." We all love our Huskers, no matter what kind of uniform they wear. TO, are you listening?... althought I seriously doubt he 'internets' much...
  4. Recruiting, hell... I'd like to see this current group of players just given more rope - turned loose. (For instance, I think Tony has turned it on recently with what seemed to be a constant threat of being pulled from the game seemingly removed.) Guys will say that's just 'street ball'. Bullcrap. I think the guys we have now could 'run' effectively if given half a chance. Obviously that's not a base offense, but I think it's an important aspect that's being 'coached' out of them...
  5. Nebraska would be stupid to fire him, he's a good coach. It's the program that sucks. I know it's not popular to say, but I hope he's around for a while. Note; this will be my first time being truly contrary on HB... but I call 'BS' here. I've been a long time supporter of doc, but have come to the conclusion that "he ain't the guy." I truly don't believe he coaches an effective offense - and that puts a product on the floor that's just not typically 'fun' for anyone (and with that, all the ramifications for the program...)
  6. This exact event happens every doc-year... I feel terrific, and there's a sentiment and a number of posts about turning the corner, getting healthy, etc. With what inevitably comes next (again, from painful experience), I think the bigger issue with these kinds of wins is about the POTENTIAL for support for basketball around these parts... we are a powerful enough university to present extremely well to the television audience (because of multiple conflicts, had to send Mrs. 86 and daughters to game last night - had to watch home game on BTN for first time in a long time) Talking heads cannot be more awed by our facilities upgrades, the scarletts are hot, and the place looks as packed and nuts as any other venue in the country. "Build it and they will come." ...and I'm talking about the program, not the arena (although that won't hurt.) imho
  7. since we're coaching here ...I just really think that all of our 'quick guys' would really show something if they were just 'turned loose'. It seems like they've been told that that's a bad thing. I don't know.
  8. A large part of the problem was Talley. You can tell he's still trying to get back his feel for the game. It's one thing for Diaz coming back after being out that long cause it's his third year, Talley missed a valuable stretch of season where it starts to click for most JUCO guys. He just gets a little rattled and unsure. I suspect he's seeing huge amounts of minutes in his first two games back because Doc knows he can get it turned back on pretty quickly. In the half court offense by the second half last night he was looking more comfortable but full court pressure was still throwing him. I love Dillon (and understand his difficulties), but I have to very respectfully disagree... it's not just one player - outside of some intermittent individual effort (Tony, Dillon, the Brandons, and most-especially Bo) the overall 'scheme' by-and-large seems to be to completely ignore the fact that the basic idea is to push the friggin' ball up the floor and to put the ball in the friggin' basket. It's just most glaring when they need to break a full-court press. It seems like our idea of what's s'posed to happen is to get a guy 'clear' near the half-court line... imho, we are just good enuf to 'force it' into the hoop all the time, in all circumstances. I think this could be a great running team if doc would just let them do it (!) "We weren't patient enough." -doc
  9. Congrats to Doc and the team. They looked like they were having some fun tonight. But, (and not to take anything away from them)...............we played close to as well as we could and IF PSU hits anywhere close to their normal 3 point percentage (last time I looked at the scoreboard they were 2 for 20), this is a very close game. So I figure if we play our best and the team picked to finish LAST in the conference plays worse than normal, it may be false hope considering the next 3 games coming up. Hope to be wrong, but I expect to be 1-7 a week from Saturday. And, for those who were at the Bob or who watched it on BTN, ...............anyone else puzzled that when we attacked in an early offense we excelled, but then later we pulled back and passively threw it around the perimeter and committed a bunch of turnovers? Surprised that Doc wouldn't stay with what was working..............plus the crowd was into it and the players were having fun with the early attacking offense............ Good energy and glad for the win. (It's actually warmer walking back to the car after a win!) However, my doc-coaching-sentiments can still be summed up in six words, "the bucket is that way guys." (apply liberally) Does doc host a camp on how not to break a press for cryin' out loud!?
  10. Bo Pelini's Huskers did not lose to a Big XII team for the first time since 1997.
  11. Great post Comish... i could not agree more. Question; do you think TO showed with Mike Anderson that he is more willing to cut-em-loose than we all think? (I'm really starting to scream loudly for a new coach to go with the shiny new facilities - in MY dwindling group of season ticket holders.) The money doesn't mean beans - TO could have it in an afternoon.
  12. speaking of defense, interesting comment on the last telecast (just rewatched the OSU game...) guys being 'over-coached' (secondary.) immediatelyt thought about Jean-Baptiste (or howevertheheck you spell it.) and his new entry into the arena - and success. any thoughts on just 'turning them loose' more? Sydney seems to be a poster-child for this concern/solution. over-coaching is something that has reared its ugly head before - thinking of 'the dark time' (callahan/cosgrove.) wonder if anyone else noticed this...
  13. Love it. No more T-magic... our QB is now 'officially' Uncle Rico!
  14. Think of what wicked stunt/formation the Blue Angels would pull off after they passed the stadium... 'going ballistic' anyone! WOW!
  15. Knapp, now you have to invent a machine that will slap it with a glove, along the bottom, about a zillion times... for the breaking in. Maybe a glove or piece of leather fastened to a power drill (!)
  16. This’ll get me BBQ’d here, I know, but very honest observation from a not-so-blue-hair… I’m about a 50/50 standing-sitting guy myself. Three standing circumstances are absolute: 1. Entire stretch of pre-game crank up / tunnel walk, plus much of first quarter. 2. Pure emotional reaction (to whatever is happening on the field). 3. Jacking up our defense on the field. Having said that... Why does standing or being berserk have to be constant throughout the course of the entire game? I mean, I’m smart enough to watch the TV ref with the orange arms, for instance, and in today’s televised games, especially those with a national audience, we all know nuthin’s happening for 10 minutes here… Geez, take a break, sit down and chat with those around you, slap people on the back, bitch about the calls, get to know your fellow Husker fans, whatever. Just a thought, but I think it’s the constant ‘contrived’ stuff that drives the blue hairs nuts – it’s just different from the student section, where the breaks in the game are all about passing around the Everclear, cracking up your buds, and planning your conquest of the hottie two rows below… (I know, cause I’ve done that too.) Grill away…
  17. It's a new skybox. Owner unknown... probably Gaga! (my cool Nebraska skybox.)
  18. ...and 'ours' NU arent't even listed (unless I missed 'em); I know there was an 'Undefeated and Unbelievable' national cover(circa 1983) with the triplets, and I think I also remember one with our real live 'Herbie Husker', Papa Steinkuhler. I seem to remember both closely preceded our first loss... Anybody remember for sure? This guy claims to have every SI cover that featured the Huskers http://www.chuskers.com/sicornhuskers.htm Thanks for that!!! (can we please just go back to tearaway jerseys? please!...) ya guys, i know there's a stupid rule now(!)

  20. How does the SI jinx apply here? Or does that have to be a national cover...? (Hopefully we're not screwed.)
  21. The problem is that it takes most NFL QB's 7 years to master the offense that BC and Gruden developed as their version of the WCO. Wats simplified that down but really. . . .how much can you simplify a doctor's degree and still have a good doctor when the time comes. Had Wats scrapped almost all of the BC offense and went to the one similar to what CU used he would have been in better shape, but he never simplified it that much. He did a pretty decent job of developing QB fundamentals but I'm not sure he ever really got anyone to understand the offense and part of that became the issue. He fell back then on I'll run the offense, give you the play and you'll have to trust me that its the right play. This was a huge issue between him and TM. There wasn't any trust there. TM didn't have that kind of relationship with Wats and in honesty was probably a little immature when it came to "moving on" after Bo pulled rank and started TM over Lee and Green as Wats had TM listed 3rd on his list of QB's. I think for a really long time TM felt like Wats might stab him in the back. Wats tried to put on a good show with his "best QB ever" type of comments. But the fact was the trust wasn't there. Not to mention TM just got bad instruction at the end of the year when he was told to take a sack instead of try to make a play. It reminded me of that kid in BC's first year who'd catch kicks for us but couldn't run so he was a sitting duck. They'd live with the lesser of two evils but never give themselves a fighting chance. Becks offense on the other hand will be much much easier to understand for the players so they can play faster and key off of a few defender reads. They're going to run a system and not just a set of plays. They're going to understand what to do when defenders do certain things and learn how to exploit those things many times even without an audible being called. It might be year two before we really see the benefit of the latter. Just like Bo's defense took a huge jump from year 1 to year 2. But look for the year 1 of the Beck offense to be more sound fundamentally, better understood by the players and more fun for the kids because they'll be able to use their strengths to their advantages because they're not so loaded up with "plays" to run. Couldn't agree more with your last paragraph. I personally think that T-mart found himself frozen by pure 'information overload.' As the season went on, and he lost his wheels, he was coached to rely more and more on the aspects that just never became second-nature for him... hence, even worse 'freezing.' I think (I'm hopeful) the more simple/straightforward approach of minimal reads, minimal options, and always moving the ball North, will give T-mart and many others the chance to play at full speed again. I think it can be a remarkably quick turn around. imho
  22. Don't know, but I doubt it... I also 'wonder', is there a prohibition against electronically 'linking in' Tressel to the coaches headset communication system, even though he's not actually in the stadium?
  23. Just don't know... We're pretty comfortable around here just saying that basketball will always just be the ugly step-child (no tradition, won't spend the money, difficult place to recruit to, won't ever roll in the AAU mud, etc., etc., etc.) It's the deeper meaning of 'Nebrasketball'... However, there are a couple of big jolts on the horizon: 1. The New Conference 2. The New Facilities. Further, the Athletic Dept. could actually come up with whatever coaching money they 'want' to; it would just reverberate through all the other sports, and be pretty damn pricey overall. Finally, I still say if we put a winner on the floor, this place will treat this game just like 'winter football' and it would become a hot ticket. It's just the 'want to'. Maybe we'll never quite have that... (...but i'm just pissed)
