Eh, they were passable when they wanted to be. On one hand, some are putting too much stock in them simply because of their relatively low sack counts. On the other hand, a lot of their poor performance was due to their own piss-poor half-assed effort. Frost ain't gonna tolerate that, and the worst offender (Gates) is gone now.

I know you've been fanboy-ing Bryant all over the place, but the OL's complete and utter inability to execute basic techniques like pulling had nothing to do with Bryant being in or not. They could stand there and pass block decently enough - it was Riley & Langsdorf's top priority after all - but that was about it.

OL. Which has been my biggest concern for the last few years, really. I think we have great guys in terms of potential, and I expect them to show plenty of improvement this year. But the problem is they were so far down under Riley that they could show huge improvement this year and still kinda suck.

They abandoned the run because they sucked at it. Especially the line, I still have a hard time fathoming how Riley & co managed to screw them up that badly.

On one hand, it was a Texas press conference, and I can understand him not wanting to comment on another program, especially since there's an ongoing investigation. On the other hand, he still kinda makes you wonder how much he'd heard, even if he had no direct involvement. Reminds me of when Charlie Sheen was on Two and a Half Men. Holds a knife to his wife's throat? "This is a very private matter, and we're going to let them work things out without our interference." Makes fun of the producer? "FIRED!"

Remember that Wistrom talked to the team and led them onto the field last year for the Wisconsin game, when they were marking the 20th anniversary of the '97 national champions team. Pity, of course, that it couldn't have been Frost leading them that day, but maybe they can get a do-over for the 25th anniversary.

Probably not a surprise for anyone here, we all thought he could become a breakout star last year, though obviously that didn't happen.

@Moiraine I think another factor is that a lot of fans want Martinez not necessarily because he's a better overall QB, but because he better matches their mental image of what a Nebraska QB should look like, ie a guy that can run it. Some (understandable) anti-Riley bias is probably in play here as well.

I still wonder if Gebbia could end up getting the start over Martinez simply because he fits with the strengths of his teammates better. A lot of people think Gebbia is a better passer and Martinez is a better runner, right? Well, it's safe to say that the O-line was better at pass blocking than run blocking last year, and I while I'm sure they'll be better at it this year, they could still be a bit uneven there. And though we're doing a ton of speculation about RBs, I think we know with a greater degree of certainty that the WRs should be a strength of this offense this year. All of that could work in Gebbia's favor this year. To be fair, everyone wants to forget the 2007 season.
